2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumLet's Talk About the Issues – Social Security
Do you agree with the progressives that it is essential to raise the cap on Social Security? Or do you agree with the conservative Democrats and Republicons that not only no, but hell no. Some are actually proposing to privatizing SS.
In 2008 H. Clinton was against raising the cap, but pressure from the Sen Sanders campaign, that wants to strengthen SS, sees her waffling and saying she might consider supporting raising the cap. Now why wouldn't she favor this method of insuring our seniors getting their fair SS? Maybe because all those corporate executives, like from Goldman-Sachs, that have been so generous to her personal finances and her campaign, might not like it. Those that say there is no quid pro quo with regard to corporate donations are living in denial.
If you want to save SS, support a candidate that openly promotes raising the cap. Support Sen Sanders the people's candidate.

(84,711 posts)Their Mantra for the past years has been to appeal to the young Millennials and others that "It won't Be There for You When You Retire" and to whip their people up into a frenzy over it.
All that has quieted down (in our War attention atmosphere and fights over Gays and Women's Right to Chose and the horrific Mass Murders and Black Lives being Targeted) ...but, its simmering there on the back burner.
Once those Repugs (if they do) find THEIR LEADER the Attack on SS and Medicare will be Full Force. They think the Young are Ripe to Hate these Programs because they are living through Tough Times due to Repub/Dem Austerity that we've lived through after Bailing out the Banksters and Giving everything Away to Wall Street and MIC.
We've got a tough road ahead. And, then....there is the "Obama Legacy" with the "TPP" being his crowning Glory....if he gets it...and he probably will since we are all focused on Evil Putin and Syria while Negotiations Continue in Atlanta this weekend.

(11,197 posts)however, I'm pretty sure Hillary supporters won't give you the discussion you seek as I already tried a similar op about it a week or so back and got bumpkiss. You're more well known on this site than me though so who knows..maybe they will answer your call.

(84,711 posts)so many Economists and "People in the Know" like Robert Reich have advocated for.
Why are our Dem Legislators not out there Day and Night advocating for this AGAINST the REPUG Forces?

Times they are a change'in though. Quicker than I ever thought possible to be honest.

(3,541 posts)It just frosts my ass when anyone calls SS an entitlement....and that the rich do not have to pay on their total income.
I have been paying into that fund for almost 50 years and still am...almost 4000 per year on my meager self employment.
Why should I be taxed on every penny I make, while someone who is rich has to pay on, what to some, is a miniscule portion of their income. Not one bit fair.

(55,981 posts)their hands on the SS money. Don't you agree? Wall Street would love to see SS priviatized as well as the Republicons.
Clinton is too smart to actually say such to the public, but I wouldn't be surprised if she and the Goldman-Sachs execs have a good laugh about it in her "speeches" with them where they pay her personal account $200,000 a pop.
In 2008 she was adamantly against raising the cap. How do you feel about raising the cap?

(130,895 posts)Strengthen Social Securitys long-term fiscal outlook. The solvency of Social Security
is not in crisis: Social Security has adequate funds to pay full benefits through 2034. But
to pay for expanded benefits, Governor OMalley supports lifting the cap on the payroll
tax for workers earning more than $250,000.
Much more about his plans for Social Security:

(11,495 posts)I have mentioned this before, my wife and I had to take care of her mother for 13 years because her brothers couldn't find the time to help out. She was unable to continue to work. She lost those years because she did the right thing and took care of her mother. O'Malley understands that everyone who has done the right thing by taking care of family deserve some help, and he wants to give them that help. Another reason I am supporting him.

(8,090 posts)I may not be reading the above excerpt right, but there's a gap in O'Malley's plan from $118,500 to $250,000?
I haven't studied all the numbers, but would like to see a comparison of what SS would look with the cap lifted to $250K, 400K, and $500K.

chafee wants to partly privatize it, so not cool imo.
