I Changed My Mind!

As someone who firmly believes that Primaries are an important part of the Democratic Process, it was disturbing to me that up to April/May of this year it looked like Democrats were not going to have any options regarding who would be the nominee for the 2016 Presidential Election.

It seemed there would be no challenges to the presumed nominee, Hillary Clinton

But then, we learned that Martin O'Malley had decided to enter the race!

I LIKED O'Malley and agreed with him on many more of the issues than I did Hillary Clinton

This was exciting, someone I felt would make a much better Democratic candidate and eventual nominee for the Dem Party.

Most of all I was happy that the Democratic Process was being preserved.

No candidate should ever be handed the nomination by the party without the voters having a chance to have their MOST IMPORTANT say in our elections.

I was happy, more motivated, I had reservations about this candidacy, but over all I liked O'Malley and was willing to try to help get him elected.

And then I heard what I had thought would NOT happen

Bernie Sanders HAD given a lot of thought to running in this race, and that he had decided he was going to do so!

?w=600

Knowing his long record on Progressive/Left issues, knowing his willingness to fight for those issues AND to GET THINGS DONE in Congress, there was really no other choice for me.

I didn't really think he had a chance at that point, but as he said no one should EVER underestimate Bernie Sanders!

I admit, I did but if you have a CONSCIENCE (I know, only spoiled rotten elitist, selfish people have consciences) which I am proud to say I do, you really have to support what is RIGHT for this country.

I was apparently far from alone and am absolutely stunned at how far Bernie has come from an almost complete unknown to actually beating Clinton in the polls and in the first Debate.

So, yes, I changed my mind!

And for those who are so concerned about people NOT voting for the Nominee, don't worry, WE will be doing so.

Let's hope everyone does!

not one of them will vote for anyone else. They were non voters for a reason. Which is why we are trying to get them signed up because Bernie is giving them a reason.

Some were Repubs, Indies, a lot of them, some never voted.

None of them will vote for an establishment candidate, that's just a fact.

The Dem Party had that same certitude for the past two mid terms.

Thinking they can push THEIR choices on the voters because THEY know best or whatever.

Times have hanged and if the Leadership of this party continues along the path of BLAMING the voters after IGNORING them, anyone who CARES about this party needs to start pressuring THEM not the voters.

We've lost the House and Senate with that kind of thinking.

And maybe YOU can tell me this, how 'scientific' is a poll of Primary Candidates that include NON Candidates?

In today's world with new technology where a vast majority of the people now use to get their news and to express their views, those polls, self admitted by may of them now btw, are so outdated they are meaningless.

Pollsters eg, got just about everything re the Greek and UK elections wrong and are trying to figure out why.

Personally, and I know there are objections to people forming their own opinions also, I trust the VIEWERS who watch these debates far, far more than the establishment polls.

We now have a way of gauging people's reactions immediately after the debates.

Not to mention how much money was raised for Bernie as a result of how well he did in the Debate. Over $3 Million dollars.

I love Bernie, but I know he would never want us to be followers.

He has often stated that he has been wrong on things, as we all have. That's why it's never a good thing to follow other people. Always think for yourself.

I support Bernie because HE agreed with ME on the issues that are important to ME. Not because I agreed with him.

We are a long way from the GE right now, so for me, it will depend on who that nominee is and no amount of prodding and nudging and scare tactics and nagging or what even people I highly respect do, will have the slightest bit of influence on what I decide to do.

55. So you agree on keeping troops in Afghanistan?
Mon Oct 19, 2015, 05:13 PM
Oct 2015

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Sunday that he supports President Barack Obama's decision to keep troops in Afghanistan, prolonging the war beyond 2016.

Obama announced last week that he would keep 5,500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan after he leaves office in 2017, breaking his promise to end the war during his tenure. He originally planned to maintain only a small military presence based at the U.S. embassy there.

During an interview on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday morning, host George Stephanopoulos asked Sanders, a Democratic presidential candidate, whether he backs keeping U.S. troops in the country.

"Well, yeah, I won't give you the exact number. Clearly, we do not want to see the Taliban gain more power, and I think we need a certain nucleus of American troops present in Afghanistan to try to provide the training and support the Afghan army needs," he said.

"Pollsters eg, got just about everything re the Greek and UK elections wrong and are trying to figure out why."

Maybe they were wrong because MOST people don't have or use landline phones (51.7%) and almost Everyone uses the internet to get all their information and current news (87.4% do) and most of those use their Mobile Phones only, which can't be polled.

You're right, pollsters know they aren't getting a good read with their polling and are perplexed as to how they can fix that. So far, they haven't found a way, so Corporate Owned pollsters (NBC, ABC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, FAUX NEWS, etc...) couldn't possibly be more accurate (or SCIENTIFIC!!!!!) than internet polls. First, they start with a bias aimed at pleasing their Corporate master owner and second, they would be polling from less than half if the population! So, I'm not seeing how ANY Corporate Owned poll could possibly be more accurate than online polls....because they can't be, not anymore.

Oct 2015

that would have only intensified had she run. I won't repeat them, but even now that she is not running, I see a preview of how bad it would have been.

Bernie had the least assailable record of anyone who might be able to take on this enormous task of running against the entire, super powerful establishment.

Third Way founders eg, crawed out of their hiding holes to attack Warren in the WSJ eg, last year which told me they were gearing up for a possible run by Warran.

'She was a Repub up to recently' eg. She's only good on Wall St, another charge.

I have a feeling this run by Bernie was well thought out. The Progressives in our party are few and far between now, but I have a feeling there was a lot of thought put into this.

And as we can see,, the ruthlessness, which we expect now, is in evidence in the attacks on Bernie.

Warren is very smart. I think the way for a run by her, needed to be paved by someone else. She knows what she would have faced.'

I had a lot of questions re O'Malley also, but it was a far better choice than Hillary for me.

House as well. I can't imagine they wouldn't win by like 60%, and would have coat-tails
the size of Texas, so Dems can retake the Senate and maybe even the House.

republicans.

Incidentally, that OP is NOT what I believe, but what I believe will be the republican MSM talking point.

If Bernie is able to get the coverage on his major speech on exactly what a Democratic Socialist means, that may alter opinions to be favorable toward Bernie.

Yes, Hillary has negatives, but she also has positive. I know people get upset, but gender will be a factor, including with republicans. All the polls indicate it. African Americans at least up to now seem to be favoring Hillary. Hispanics favor whoever the Democratic candidate is.

The republicans are going to be out in force, no matter who the Democratic candidate is, and they will be motivated. After the debates they have already been coming out of the wood work, distorting the comments I presented in the title.

In other words, republican turnout will be stimulated no matter who the Democratic candidate is

At least that is my assessment.

issue in IA, maybe today or soon. I was in and out today and I DO think I heard that correctly. We'll see, but THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH SOCIALISM!

Socialism is Medicare, Social Security, Highway System, TVA, Unions, Public Education.... use your own imagination and I bet you can find many other Governmental programs that come under the heading of SOCIALISM. If he decides to explain it this way, I doubt very few will find Socialism a negative issue for them. Unfortunately, those in the other Party have either DE-REGULATED so many or simply want them PRIVATIZED!!!

It's everywhere, and in so many places that REPUKES are trying to get rid of.

will motivate more republicans to come out then Bernie, because of their hatred of Hillary, and I was giving the reasons why they would be just as motivated if Bernie is the nominee.

Incidentally, if you read my post I NEVER said there was anything wrong with socialism I was saying, and it has already started, that the repukes are going on full attack on Bernie with that. It doesn't matter whether it is misrepresented, lied about or distorted. The MSM will give more voice to the republicans, and not provide equal time for Bernie.

I also mentioned that Bernie was giving amajor speech on this which could help.

However I stand by my assessment that WHOEVER is the Democratic nominee, the republicans will be equally motivated

about it all over. I just felt a need to make a very clear statement about what information I had heard. Unless Bernie clearly explains what Democratic Socialism is TPTB (Democratic OR Republican) are going to define it as a super NEGATIVE position. It's MY PERSONAL opinion that our very own Democratic Party is working against millions of their very own supporters to make sure Bernie isn't able to upset the apple cart!

I DON'T have a link, but I'm sure someone here at DU can find one that shows Hillary may be the Number One recipient of donors of CEO's on Wall Street. I can not PROVE that she's talking out of both sides of her mouth, but given how Bill Clinton and Barack Obama campaigned it's my gut feeling that she's simply "talking the talk!" I will no longer sit by with blinders on a play the same game over again! But I may have to!!!

I KNOW if she's the nominee I will be forced to vote for her because of what the consequences WILL mean if a Repuke becomes POTUS! Voting for her will be done WITHOUT any enthusiasm or feeling of happiness. For me it's a vote I DO NOT want to cast because I deeply feel NOTHING will change. I'm a Boomer and I don't think I've ever felt such fear about the direction this country is taking.

Only time will tell. What I wish she would do versus what I "think" she'll do is at the core of my thinking. I have no crystal ball... can only go on what I've seen already.

Democratic Socialism means, the better it will be.

Different issue, but similar strategy. It is an understatement to say that Rev. Wright generated a lot of controversy when Obama was running in 2008, and was part of the congregation of Rev. Wright's church. He didn't wait for it to take hold, he came out very shortly with a major press conference so there would be no misrepresentation.

Unfortunately, Kerry did not come out quick or strong enough when the swift boaters started garbage, and by the time he did, it had already became entrenched.

It has not reached that stage with Bernie, but it could very easily do that, which is why it is essentially he comes out soon to address it.

are Bernie and Hillary, though I admit a bias toward Hillary.

However, I did have a pretty good discussion a few days ago with someone, and they pretty much convinced me that the demographics are with the Democrats, as long as they get registered and vote. Bernie has the younger Democrats pretty much in the bag. The enthusiasm and passion he has generated cannot be ignored. While you are correct about the Democratic establishment, the more people that participate, things change.

The most obvious example is the two candidates leading in the republican field. They are not republican establishment candidates, though at times it is very hard to distinguish differences in their extremism, but it serves as an example that change can happen. Even in the republican case where it is from bad to worse. The Koch brothers threw a lot of money at Scott Walker, and it fizzled out. "Those in the know" told us bush was a shoe in.

This election season is not conforming to the same old business.

I don't know what will happen, and like I said my bias is with Hillary at this time, but grass roots support is something Bernie has, and that is something that can't be bought with money.

The SNL Larry David skit didn't hurt Bernie. In fact it probably helped him, and he could not have responded better when he was asked about it. He said "Larry David plays me better than I do". He has a sense of humor, he is able to laugh at himself. There are NOT many politicians who can do that. republicans don't even have a sense of humor. Hillary wasn't presented in a very good light either in that skit. In fact I would say the skit was much more negative on Hillary negative characteristics than Bernie

Try not to get too disgusted. Change sometimes takes time, but it is pretty obvious something is happening this election cycle that isn't business as usual

talking points and smears etc.

I don't get the support for someone who is so inconsistent on the issues, always leaning right if there is a choice and with such close ties to the Bush family and Wall St.

But like you, it's not my business who any one chooses to support.

I would rather spend the time promoting my candidate, which he makes very easy than slamming other voters, smearing other candidates etc.

Great that you feel the same way I do, really excited about a great candidate and one who isn't likely to flip flop once elected, because his long record makes that most unlikely.

However as he has said repeatedly, he can't do much of anything even if he wins, ALONE. The Political Revolution he talks about is urgently needed to help anyone who wants to change the course of this country.

So yes, the more people who 'get it' the better and they can't go away AFTER the election either.

Thanks for a great comment and glad to be on the same side in these primaries!

This is a very idea rich post. So, here goes...I never thought of Hillary as my candidate. I have always wanted her to have a strong primary challenger. I thought O'Malley was going to be that challenger. He did come out swinging at one point and talked about not crowning someone just because they seem like the only choice something like that. He looked like a great alternative smart, funny, right on a lot of policies. But, then Bernie came along and I felt I had met my political soul mate. He is funny, charming, charismatic in an under the radar way, he is the most persuasive speaker I have seen in my lifetime. So, it took about 3 seconds not really it took going to Bernie's rally in Minneapolis and I switched.

Last time, they cynically (and wrongly) thought they would scoop up the disaffected Hillary voters by offering them
Sarah Palin. Didn't work out so well because, well, "Sarah Palin"....but what might they try this time around?

I do not believe (wrongly or rightly) that the GOP is ready to put a female or non-white male candidate at the top of their ticket, even if it IS 2015 for the rest of humanity. But they might try to slip us another Sarah.
