As an arrogant, female, or so I've been told here on DU lol, that makes her a smart woman in my opinion!

(5,946 posts)I just don't celebrate people supporting who I support because it cuts both ways. There are people I detest that also support some of the people I support. all that matters to me is that I like the candidate. that other people do as well, is just a nice bonus.

(2,062 posts)I recall her talking about the case against Roman Polanski. The group was talking about the young girl Polanski had sex with and Goldberg said something to..... "well, it really wasn't rape rape".....after that i lost all respect for her.
Whoopi: "I know it wasn't rape-rape. It was something else but I don't believe it was rape-rape. He went to jail and and when they let him out he was like "You know what this guy's going to give me a hundred years in jail I'm not staying, so that's why he left."
Oh yes, of course. Duh. Case closed.
What is worrisome about Whoopi's argument is that she refuses to call a 43 year old man having sex with an unconscious 13 year old girl "rape".

(62,325 posts)when we are right about something, take the Iraq War eg, even though we know what a horrible disaster it will be for millions of human beings, we should be 'flexible' and cave to those who dont give a damn about the lives of other human beings.
Not saying that is your position, but sadly, it IS, I have discovered, the position of the 'political class' who are entirely a species unto themselves, motivated mostly by power and money.
I admire people like Sanders, and like Barbara Lee who were so 'inflexible' they stood up against the scared majority and voted against both the Iraq War and The Patriot. I call that courage. That is what need in our Leaders. Hillary otoh, voted FOR both those issues.
Strength of character, good judgement and foresight, those are the characteristics that make great leaders. Bernie Sanders certainly has proven he is in possession of all of them.
Hillary, not so much.

(4,558 posts)On DADT, I joined the US Navy in May of 1989. I most painfully recall the interrogation at New Orleans MEPS station.. Are you a homosexual, have you ever engaged in homosexual acts.. and dozens of variations of those questions. I recall checking into Boot camp in Orlando Florida, and being interrogated about it again. Then I recall what was called "the day of truth" in boot camp.. being interrogated and threatened with legal consequences if I was gay, had ever been gay, had ever had gay sex and didn't come clean right then and right there.. and at any time, had I even hesitated in my answers I would have been booted out. DADT fixed that. I'm also glad that DADT is gone now, and that finally those entering the armed forces today will never have to go through that horrendous, embarrassing line of questioning. But in that day.. it was awful. DADT did MUCH to advance our rights. Was it perfect? no. Was it wholly the right thing to do? No. But in the climate of the time, it was a HUGE advancement for us.
DOMA.. I remember the 1970's, when we were finally getting some great progress for the first time in getting acceptance. I recall stonewall. Then, I remember the 1980's. I remember Mr. Larry Hernandez, the first of several people that I personally knew who died from the new gay cancer. I recall just how fast we went from progressing in our acceptance, in our visibility, to suddenly being this hated pariah once again. By the 90's I all too well remember just how much the sentiment against us had grown. I remember the backlash of the Hawaiian attempt to through the courts in Baer v Lewin in 1993. There was most definitely a huge push by the right, and with no small amount of support, to get a constitutional amendment in place declaring that marriage was between 1 man and 1 woman. It wasn't a sure thing for their side (or they would have still gone ahead with it), but it was a VERY possible and VERY real threat of a constitutional amendment, and it did have a LOT of popular support. The compromising and bipartisan passing of DOMA hugely diffused that entire movement making it, if not completely gone, very irrelevant.
So yes, I was very happy for DOMA, and yes, I am quite glad that kind of compromise did much to protect us from something that would have been MUCH worse (a possible constitutional amendment) happening, which would have made all of the advances that our wonderful current president and SCOTUS made possible.. the elimination of DADT and full equality for our people in the armed forces, AND the elimination of DOMA making marriage possible for us.
So, I'm sorry, you are very incorrect, there was a looming threat of something much worse.. a constitutional amendment would NOT have been able to be overturned by the SCOTUS, and it would still be in effect today, and if it had passed and been ratified, today there would be NO marriage for us, and my own marriage would be completely unaccepted by my own country.

I don't think you can count on Clinton to protect you unless it's expedient for her, but I guess that's a chance you're willing to take. Luckily the political winds are blowing favorably for LGBTs and will continue to as older bigots pass away.

(15,882 posts)during this administration. Over 50 million people have moved from "middle class" to the categories of "working poor" or poverty. His "solution" was and is making the bank$ters, some of them the biggest donors to his electoral effort, wealthier than they have been in decades while keeping the deficit low - and thus visiting austerity on working people, like the 35% of unemployed black males, (who could be helped with government jobs, btw.
The "plan"is detailed in his Treasury Secretary's book Stress Test, and laughed at by voters here.
Obama, otoh, stated a net worth of $1.3 million in 2007, in 2015 reports $7 million, an increase of 438% in his net worth.
Doesn't sound like he gave nearly as much as most working Americans. Did much, much better than most.

(62,325 posts)Bernie had no problem explaining for the comprehension impaired media, what they, pretended or actually were incapable of reading.
Seth Myers finished it off to the point where they were totally embarrassed.
As for Republicans, Hillary is losing in polls against Republicans. Which makes sense, she has very little cross over appeal without which she cannot win the GE.
Bernie otoh, is beating all Republicans in polls, wiping the floor with Trump.
To the point where Trump, moron or not, knows who he doesn't want to win the nomination, he wants Hillary to win, he says.

They dropped it, it was a losing attempt at a smear. But you dragging it up shows me you have very little you can attempt to smear him with.
And what's with that anyhow, the horribly negative campaigning from the Hillary campaign? They did the same thing with Obama which many of us will never forget.
Not very smart to raise that spectre by repeating the same mistakes again.
Bernie beats the Republicans Hillary doesn't. Period.

(135,425 posts)he wrote. And his remarks were SPECIFIC to that work.
No one is even TALKING about that thing anymore. It was stupid. People have accepted his explanation that he doesn't feel that way about women anymore.
What most people do not realize, though, is that it was just the tip of the iceberg. He has written a lot of other rather 'weird' stuff--and he wasn't a child when he wrote it, either.
He hasn't said anything at all about these lesser known works, which focus on sex and cancer and other oddball (discredited) theories as well as some strange perspectives about things like public education and the role of parental guidance in child development.
This stuff doesn't do him any favors.
Don't take my word for it--read it.

(4,775 posts)I can't respond, I've had that poster on ignore for a long time, but I was expecting some crazy way off base writings given the context and intention those links were provided in.
Instead, I am grateful to that poster, I had not read them before, and I found absolute verification that Bernie is the real thing. At last, there is someone to support that isn't a programmed product of a sick society, but has always been (these writing, I think, undated, were probably from 40 years ago or more) on the frontier of rethinking the mechanized militarized soul-less environment destroying empty materialistic society we are thrown into as our only valid choice.
I only read the first two links, not the third, too long and I only have so much time for this, but they were beautiful. It is sad to see a DU'er cherry pick such honest and thoughtful work for some controversial gotcha. Every word of it rang true, the spirit of truth and working to create something better was alive in his words. Obviously many of those thoughts would not be approved by any candidate's focus group as what a candidate ought to say. So much the better, let's be real.
The most offensive thing I found was Bernie referencing Ron Morrison of The Doors, when it was Jim Morrison.
Nice to see him even way back then railing against the gun lobby, I knew the gun framing against Bernie was disingenuous. So many other principled positions, too, an endless stream of them, truly a representative of the culture I've always wished could establish itself here rather than the corporate phoniness that has shaded every light to dim darkness.
So happy to support such a man as Bernie, I was dreading the soulless wasteland the party was offering us with more third way dreck, wanted Warren to step up, and Bernie has been amazing, much closer to my overall beliefs and worldview than Warren.

(62,325 posts)and they are rejecting 'science'. Fine with me, to be honest! Meantime we have a lot of work to do to make sure every American knows who Bernie is.
The media is totally on the side of the old, Establishment candidates, to the point of deleting polls that overwhelmingly support Bernie and comments that support him.
Fortunately the Old Media is NOT where a majority of people now get their news.
Old polling practices, Old Media, and old Status Quo politicians.
It's time move forward into the future. Those who want to remain in the past, well, I suppose there will always be people who feel more 'safe' with the old ways.

(62,325 posts)You seem to be arguing about something that isn't an issue. She recognized what now milliions of people recognize about Sanders, that he is one of the smartest voices out there right now. That's the reason he is resonating with so many people, across the political landscape. NOT just with Democrats, but with all kinds of people.
Hillary resonates ONLY with a % of the loyal, Democratic base. Right now tht makes up only about 32% of the electorate, down from by 10% of where it was several years ago. And of that demographic, Sanders has already captured approx 30%.
What that means is that Hillary at this point is resonating with only a very small % of the electorate, while Sanders is gathering support from all across the political landscape.
I'm sure Whoopi, smart woman that she is, knows this and knows why.
