Bernie Sanders's closest Senate ally just endorsed Hillary ClintonUpdated by Dylan Matthews on October 27, 2015, 12:00 p.m. ET
<...>
But the move is also an indication of just how tough Sanders is finding it to get even ideologically sympathetic elected officials on his side.
<...>
If any senator were going to endorse Sanders, it would be Sherrod Brown. And yet here he is, endorsing Clinton.
This is a broader problem than just Brown, though. Other vocal congressional progressives have flocked to endorse Hillary.
<...>
To a large degree, this is a testament to just how many connections Clinton maintains with different important factions in the Democratic Party. As far back as 2013, women senators were announcing their support for her bid. Her time as senator from New York means liberal politicians from New York City like Serrano feel obliged to offer her their endorsements. Mayor Bill de Blasio who, along with Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, is one of the most prominent progressive Democrats in the country is reportedly planning to endorse Clinton soon. That doesn't just reflect regional loyalties: He ran Clinton's 2000 Senate campaign.
By contrast, Sanders has been endorsed by a total of two major elected officials: Congressional Progressive Caucus co-chairs Reps. Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ). He couldn't even keep Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, a die-hard progressive who tried to implement single-payer health care in the state, from endorsing Clinton.
It's still theoretically possible that Sanders could nab an endorsement from Elizabeth Warren, the last big-deal progressive whose support is still up for grabs. But it's unclear why she would. She signed that 2013 letter from women Democratic senators expressing support for Clinton, and with her position in the Democratic leadership, it's doubtful she'd want to alienate herself from her colleagues by being literally the only senator to back Bernie.

If you cross team Hillary, you'd better be damn sure that the person that you do endorse, wins.

Bernie won't hold it against anyone. Bill and Hillary sure as hell will.

(8,760 posts)Almost six years later most Clinton aides can still rattle off the names of traitors and the favors that had been done for them, then provide details of just how each of the guilty had gone on to betray the Clintonsas if it all had happened just a few hours before. The data project ensured that the acts of the sinners and saints would never be forgotten.
There was a special circle of Clinton hell reserved for people who had endorsed Obama or stayed on the fenceafter Bill and Hillary had raised money for them, appointed them to a political post, or written a recommendation to ice their kids application to an elite school.
On one early draft of the hit list, each Democratic member of Congress was assigned a numerical grade from one to seven, with the most helpful to Hillary earning ones and the most treacherous drawing sevens. The set of sevens included Sens. John Kerry, Jay Rockefeller, Bob Casey, and Patrick Leahy, as well as Reps. Chris Van Hollen, Baron Hill, and Rob Andrews.

(34,119 posts)Any Democrat who would endorse an Independent especially against HRC (add DWS) would likely suffer largely. I certainly will never hold their endorsements against them. I think a large part of the public does not even know what an endorsement really is. It seems to matter here some but actually, do any of us choose our candidate on endorsements unless we simply cannot make a choice?

(8,733 posts)Of elected officials, money talks (dark money talks very loudly) and poor people walk.
At the end of the day, all most politicians care about is money and getting re-elected, Bernie is rocking the boat. Bernie is not "business as usual".
Its hard to want to change the way government is working. All the perks and influence money can buy. Its easy to support and be friends with a Senator Sanders, one senator among many from a small state and limited audience. A very different situation with a president Sanders and a national audience (read: bully pulpit).
He might actually be able to do some of those things he talks about. Change is hard. Doing the right thing for the American people is hard.

(44,182 posts)He's one of the best liberal Senators we have, a true public servant. He fights for what's right.
There is nothing at all in his record that suggests all he cares about is money and getting re-elected.

It is no slight against Sherrod Brown, as I stated "change is hard".
Make no mistake, this election is about "status quo" vs "change". It is about your willingness to accept that 51% of Americans live on less than $30,000 a year and so what or want to Make that better. (https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/netcomp.cgi?year=2014)
That .08% (yes, point zero eight percent) own 53% of all wages earned in 2014 or you want to make it better. (https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/netcomp.cgi?year=2014)
That student loan debt is second only to home mortgage debt or you want to make it better. (http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/03/22/upshot/were-frighteningly-in-the-dark-about-student-debt.html?referer=&_r=0)
Not just talk about it as the progressive moderate-centerist who doesn't want to be like Denmark (cause 'Merica).

It feels like Clinton has been the odds on favorite since 2004 when she was outpolling those in the race even when she wasn't.
For many she is a safe bet and a throwback to the Clinton years. I can't blame them but it all seems very boring and same ol' same ol'.
Bernie still is representing what the party needs to hear even if they don't want to take their medicine.... yet.

(42,862 posts)Based on posts around this website, if a politician endorses Hillary, they don't really mean it, and they're only doing so because they are afraid of some sort of retaliation. By default, all endorsements for Hillary are void.
But if a politician of similar stature endorses Bernie, then it actually means something. Got it!
(Actually, the more I think about it, the more I kinda like the notion that people fear Hillary's political prowess.)
