Black Lives Matter. End of Story.
I do not intend for this to be a post calling out any individual or any particular candidate's supporters, but I think that many of us, both Bernie and Hillary supporters, are reacting to the #BlackLivesMatter protests of our party's candidates in exactly the wrong way. We talk about what candidate x did wrong, or what candidate y's supporters should have said or should not have said. Those of us who are white progressives have been making it about us. But it's not about us. It's not about Hillary or Bernie. It's about Trayvon Martin, Sandra Bland, Michael Brown, and the countless others who have had their lives cut tragically short by institutionalized white supremacy. It's about the daily microaggressions faced by so many people of color that accumulate into a crushing burden over the years. It's about racist policing. It's about mass incarceration. It's about black lives.
I firmly believe that all DUers know that black lives matter. So lets keep talking about the #BlackLivesMatter protests, but in terms of the issues that they seek to address, rather than trying to use them to build up or tear down a candidate. Let's work to make sure that racial justice is at the forefront of our party's primaries, and in the subsequent general election. Let's push all three of our candidates to improve on racial equality, and ensure that whichever candidate becomes the next president is held accountable for his or her actions or inaction.
