(45,251 posts)By "known," I mean known well before the Iraq War vote was taken.
I have a lot of respect for Susan Sarandon. Who wouldn't? I mean...
Sarandon was not a member of any Congressional intelligence committee, no one gave her access to any NIE--and she still knew enough to make her own TV commercial suggesting we should know what Iraq did to our country before going to war against Iraq. (Not that an NIE does one any good if one votes to put people in hairm's way without bothering to read it. Yes, I know Hillary claims to have interviewed people from the CIA instead, but one way to test truth is to compare official statements, like the NIE, with oral statements. I mean, who would ignore ANY relevant evidence before voting for a war--and do you really want a person who would in charge of asking Congress to go to war. Iraq, Libya, Syria, oy!)
At the time, Bernie Sanders not only knew enough to vote against that war, but he also knew enough to warn that invading Iraq would ultimately de-stabilize the entire MIddle East.
I'd rather have an honest person like Sanders, or even Janet, in charge of the foreign policy of the United States than one who was in line with Poppy and Dim Son Bush and PNAC as to the invasion. And, while I do care some if the reason Democrats got in line with PNAC was lack of smarts or outright corruption, neither of those two equals a recommendation for the job of the most powerful person in the world.

Address to the Nation on the Invasion of Iraq (January 16, 1991)
George H. W. Bush
Just 2 hours ago, allied air forces began an attack on military targets in Iraq and Kuwait. These attacks continue as I speak. Ground forces are not engaged.
This conflict started August 2d when the dictator of Iraq invaded a small and helpless neighbor. Kuwaita member of the Arab League and a member of the United Nationswas crushed; its people, brutalized. Five months ago, Saddam Hussein started this cruel war against Kuwait. Tonight, the battle has been joined.

transcript: President Clinton explains Iraq strike
CLINTON: Good evening.
Earlier today, I ordered America's armed forces to strike military and security targets in Iraq. They are joined by British forces. Their mission is to attack Iraq's nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs and its military capacity to threaten its neighbors.

10:16 P.M. EST
THE PRESIDENT: My fellow citizens, at this hour, American and coalition forces are in the early stages of military operations to disarm Iraq, to free its people and to defend the world from grave danger.
On my orders, coalition forces have begun striking selected targets of military importance to undermine Saddam Hussein's ability to wage war. These are opening stages of what will be a broad and concerted campaign. More than 35 countries are giving crucial support -- from the use of naval and air bases, to help with intelligence and logistics, to the deployment of combat units. Every nation in this coalition has chosen to bear the duty and share the honor of serving in our common defense.

(1,917 posts)based on lies just like the last one.
There were no babies thrown from their incubators.
Kuwait was NOT an innocent per Jimmy Carter.
On PBS, just before HW sent us to wage war on Iraq, Pres. Carter
announced that Kuwait had been cross-drilling into Iraq's oil fields and stealing Iraqi oil.
This, right after Iraq had defended Kuwait against an invasion by Iran, costing Iraq several hundred $M.
Not sure how many saw that interview, but it was eye-opening for me wrt 1st Gulf war.

Yes, Sanders supporters on DU get alert stalked and may even get driven off, but, as some ancient scribe or other wrote:
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

Besides, I have to be correct.
Not left, or right, liberal, or conservative.
I simply have to be correct.
I call them as I see 'em.
I see all the $$ Hillary has got from Wall Street (and I like the Clintons) and I just don't think she will get in the way of their gravy train, or lead the kind of revolution, which I call evolution, America, and the world needs.
Obama has been a good president. Hillary would probably do ok to. The problem is we need a lot more than a president doing a "good" job.
We need a game changer.
Someone who has spent their whole political career working for the poor, and working class, not listening to the DLC, Third Way, moderate, centrist, Wall Street enablers.
Sorry, but that's the truth.

(10,497 posts)Naive, maybe, but still true.
I also want to state that Bernie Sanders is giving us something we haven't received in so very long, honesty! His views are not "crazy" or paid for by some billionaire who thinks that his/her money should give them an outsized voice in our politics. That is one of the great things about him. The fact that he is right about the problems that we face and comes bearing common sense solutions is why I whole-heartedly endorse him for POTUS!
We are at a cross road in our politics. The populist support that Bernie and a couple of nut job Republican populists on the right demonstrate that Americans are growing concerned at the level of corruption in our country. If you noticed something about the last Republican debate, their statements were noticably different than in the past in many areas. The monied class is scrambling to back off some because they realize that they have been too open about their corruption and have pushed us too fast. They are terrified that Bernie could mess up 35 years of hard work to co-opt our government, judicial system, and media. They need someone like Hillary to subtly rein in our populist shift.
We need to fight for Publicly Funded Elections to attack the root of their control. Bernie plans on accomplishing this by using us to create leverage. Not only do I endorse Bernie, I stand behind him on everything!

Bernie is the game changer. We can't afford to waste more time with small changes. We need someone who will work to make large changes and by doing so gets more done. A tiny bit of a large idea is much better than a tiny bit of a small idea and that is what we have been getting, if that.
Good to have you here with us.
