Bernie Sanders' momentum stalls in an unlikely place: union halls
Sen. Bernie Sanders finds unions slipping from his graspC
.................
Sanders, the Vermont senator, doesnt hedge with labor. Just about anything on the broader labor agenda, he champions. He recently unveiled legislation that read like a union wish list in front of a spirited throng of laborers shouting approval, Almada among them.
Sanders bristled when a reporter asked whether the bill would help him win endorsements from national unions which it hasnt. Its not a question of winning, he snapped. This is legislation I have supported, quite honestly, since literally the first year I was in Congress. That was a quarter-century ago.
Despite Sanders deep support for labor, the national nurses organization that Almada sought to join is the only major union to endorse Sanders in the race for the Democratic nomination for president. It is dwarfed by much larger labor groups that are lining up with his arguably less committed, less reliable rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
National unions representing more than half of Americas 14.6 million unionized workers are already in Clintons corner, and many of the rest are heading in that direction. .............................
Even so, the next major union poised to make an endorsement the Service Employees International Union, which represents 2 million workers is expected to throw its support behind Clinton. Union officials say their internal polling shows 75% of their members favor her.......................
Its a classic tension between the head and the heart, said Lance Compa, who teaches labor law at the Cornell University School of Labor and Industrial Relations. Union leaders are feeling particularly risk-averse this election, with a hostile Congress and a Supreme Court that has labor in its crosshairs. The court will be hearing a case against the California Teachers Assn. that poses an existential threat to public employee unions nationwide, with justices weighing whether to ban them from requiring the employees they represent to pay dues. Labor leaders are horror-struck by the prospect of a Republican president filling the next Supreme Court vacancy.
Union leaders are negotiators by nature, Compa said. They understand you cant get everything they want. You get the best deal in the end. That is what they are looking at now as they weigh whom to endorse.............

(135,425 posts)membership is favoring Clinton overwhemingly.
She has a track record of accomplishment, she knows how to negotiate the best possible deal, she doesn't get wrapped around pointless axles, and she's not afraid.
That's probably why.

(70,221 posts)Hillary knows how to negotiate--has had lots of experience around the world. Not saying Sanders does not know how but seems he does want it all (forgets we have Republicans and tea-baggers who control Congress-)--Sanders wants a Revolution-wants his supporters to rise up. How--millions of marches on DC??

(6,568 posts)The only way shit gets done is to negotiate.
Do you only type in short soundbites full of buzz words? And really, the capitalization of every word is unnecessary.

(6,568 posts)And why is the TPP all her fault? She hasn't been SoS for quite some time, and has NOT been a part of the talks since she was.
A better question is why am I arguing with you? Nothing you post seems to make sense, and you continue to wage war on the written English language.

(50 posts)...Stand with Hillary.
For all those people who love to make talk about how much they 'support' Unions, supporting the person that the Unions have decided to be the best candidate for advancing workers rights should be easy.
Unions stand with Democrats. Democrats stand with Unions. It's not a hard concept to understand.

(6,409 posts)Most of them follow the Third Way blueprint. There is a lot of "cross pollination" between unions leadership and Democratic Party activity. Just as the Democratic strategy of the last 30 years resulted in us becoming the minority party, union strategy has led to declining membership. Maybe that's just a coincidence.
