Related: About this forumBernie has NO detailed plans! Grand ideas but no substance.
I mean, he's not a sitting Senator or anything with bills he sponsors and co-sponsors. There's no way to look at all of them to get details about his platform and how he'd get these things done. He's useless! How can anyone vote for that?

(500 posts)I have many things that I went more details on from Bernie, and I'm certainly not here to argue against that like other people might. My point simply is that many of these links are to current legislation that he drafted this year and provide some of the details people complain about regularly around here. How is he going to pay for college or how will the transaction tax work? Well, here's the legislation. How will he implement increasing the minimum wage over the next few years? Well, here's the legislation. Some of it people can find if they simply look instead of us all arguing on DU and not bothering to really look into the other candidates.
I like O'Malley, BTW. He has definitely impressed me with his proposals, and I'm glad you guys post his proposals regularly. He's the most comprehensive with all of his policies by far, I'd say. I'd be pretty happy if he were the frontrunner, and it'd make me rethink my primary vote.

(3,190 posts)"Oppose everything the Dems try to get done" as they did with Obama, then I don't care who the Dem POTUS is, it's going to be the same problem. I would suggest, however, that Hillary would have a tougher time than Bernie in that she is generally hated by the RW, who's constituents will cheer every time the repub controlled congress stops her agenda in its tracks.
Btw...Bernie's political revolution that he speaks of often, addresses this directly. It's a call for people by the millions to get involved and stay involved in politics, apply the pressure to their elected representatives to get things done that benefit the vast majority of us. If you remember, Obama used the same idea in 2008, but it quickly fizzled after he entered office. Bernie has made it very clear that creation of this people's political revolution is one of the main goals of his campaign, that even if he doesn't win, it will become a significant force to fix the way government responds to the will of the people.

tex-wyo-dem
(3,190 posts)He played the long game and completely outmaneuvered and outsmarted the repugs on many things. To this day, however, I find it strange that some of Obama's policies seem to be in direct contradiction to other policy that he supports or says he supports. In any case, Obama and the team around him is very very smart for political strategy.
I'm not convinced Hillary would be that smart and is every bit, if not more, of a decisive figure as Obama wrt the RW.
Sanders not a "cagey fighter"? I completely disagree. His advantage is that he has the enthusiastic support of millions of regular people. He doesn't mince words...where he stands and his opinions are right there in black and white. He fights for us, and we'll fight for him...and that is he very essence of his political revolution.

(53,034 posts)Additionally, legislation is not the same as policy advanced by a president. That he hasn't developed detailed policy positions but instead points to this legislation makes me wonder if he has intended to stay in the Senate all along.
I also consider it an irresponsible use of taxpayer resources to devote the time and resources of Senate staff into writing and introducing legislation he knows has no chance of making it out of committee let alone passing. Much of those were introduced this year, which serves his campaign but not the people of the country, who have a right to expect our Senators to use taxpayer resources to develop policies that can get passed to improve people's lives rather than serve the political interests of his presidential campaign. The law does in fact prohibit the use of taxpayer money for campaign purposes, and it seems to me that is what he is doing by introducing showboat legislation.
I do not fall in the camp of those who despise government and prefer it not function. I understand many do, and they are not at all concerned with what a president or representative does but rather seek someone who will validate their anger. I won't be voting for government shutdown and gridlock. The Tea Party does enough of that already. There are people across this country that need government to function in order to get by. For them, legislation that will never advance does them no good. Their concerns are about daily survival, not having their anger validated. While we might all wish for a world in which bills like the ones above could be passed, that is not the nature of the US congress and it won't be anytime soon. Reckless disregard for that fact helps no one who depends on government, as much as it might provide for convenient talking points.

(53,034 posts)Tough negotiation is key, but Bernie has displayed no ability to do that. He has never gotten a single piece of reform legislation through in over 30 yrs in congress. Do you remember the split it caused because the Banks got their Bailout with NO concessions.
The UAW bought themselves a little time by making these concessions.
New Hires are paid less than 1/2 of what their counterparts make...and this WILL phase out as more are forced into early retirement.
Non-Union Plants were not the only concession, just one of the BIGGEST.
Instead of guaranteed annual raises, the unions now get profit sharing, which means they get nothing in unprofitable and lean years. An infamously unproductive job bank was eliminated, where laid off workers sat getting paid for doing nothing often for months at a time until work picked up again. Cost of living adjustments were suspended and overtime no longer paid until workers worked over 40 hours. Pensions were eliminated and replaced by 401(k)'s for new hires. Strikes were banned at GM and Chrysler under the terms of the government bailout.

(4,211 posts)Here's a non-comprehensive list of what you're calling non-reform-based legislation:
-Corporate Crime Accountability (February 1995)
-Saving Money, for Colleges and Taxpayers (April 1998)
-Holding IRS Accountable, Protecting Pensions (July 2002)
-Expanding Free Health Care (November 2001)
-Getting Tough On Child Labor (July 2001)
-Increasing Funding for Heating for the Poor (September 2004)
-Fighting Corporate Welfare and Protecting Against Nuclear Disasters (June 2005)
-Greening the U.S. Government (June 2007)
-Protecting Our Troops (October 2007)
-Restricting the Bailout to Protect U.S. Workers (February 2009)
-Helping Veterans' Kids (July 2009)
-Exposing Corruption in the Military-Industrial Complex (November 2012)
-Support for Treating Autism in Military Health Care
You can read the details for each at the link down below.
When the Affordable Care Act was in danger of not having the votes to pass, Sanders used his leverage to win enough funding for free health treatment for 10 million Americans through Community Health Centers. This gutsy moveholding out until the funds were put into the billhas even Republican members of Congress requesting the funds, which have helped millions of Americans who otherwise would not have access.
Another moment came when Sanders, who was then chair of the Veterans committee, worked with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), to overhaul the Veterans Administration. McCain praised Sanders' work on the bill in an interview with National Journal. Sen. Jack Reed (D-RI) even went so far as to say the bill would never have passed without Sanders' ability to bring the parties to a deal.

(248 posts)Just some of the things he has gotten passed or amendments to legislation he put in that have been passed through congress include:
Corporate Crime Accountability (February 1995): A Sanders amendment to the Victims Justice Act of 1995 required offenders who are convicted of fraud and other white-collar crimes to give notice to victims and other persons in cases where there are multiple victims eligible to receive restitution.
Saving Money, for Colleges and Taxpayers (April 1998): In an amendment to H.R. 6, the Higher Education Amendments of 1998, Sanders made a change to the law that allowed the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education to make competitive grants available to colleges and universities that cooperated to reduce costs through joint purchases of goods and services.
Holding IRS Accountable, Protecting Pensions (July 2002): Sanders' amendment to the Treasury and General Government Appropriations Act of 2003 stopped the IRS from being able to use funds that violate current pension age discrimination laws. Although he faced stiff GOP opposition, his amendment still succeeded along a 308 to 121 vote.
Expanding Free Health Care (November 2001): You wouldn't think Republicans would agree to an expansion of funds for community health centers, which provide some free services. But Sanders was able to win a $100 million increase in funding with an amendment.
Getting Tough On Child Labor (July 2001): A Sanders amendment to the general appropriations bill prohibited the importation of goods made with child labor.
Increasing Funding for Heating for the Poor (September 2004): Sanders won a $22 million increase for the low-income home energy assistance program and related weatherization assistance program.
Fighting Corporate Welfare and Protecting Against Nuclear Disasters (June 2005): A Sanders amendment brought together a bipartisan coalition that outnumbered a bipartisan coalition on the other side to successfully prohibit the Export-Import Bank from providing loans for nuclear projects in China.
And that was just while he was in the House. He also got a lot passed in the Senate.

(3,544 posts)Did you ever wonder why? He's been an independent candidate his whole life, until recently. Previously, no one in politics liked an independent candidate. It goes against the status quo. It ruffles their fine feathers, and gives them headaches. Awwww.
Have you not heard about the political revolution? People are fed up with the last 40-50 years of the same old failed politics. Millions of people have said enough is enough. I'm one of them. I fear for the middle class being destroyed on a daily basis, and it's been going on for the past 20 years. Without a thriving middle class, we're all done. Oligarchy is among us, and if we do not do something to stop it, ALL OF US will pay, big time.

The least one should expect of a candidate for the presidency is have a clear plan with detailed white papers for each important policy. Its true for all candidates not just Bernie. The other two however have started putting out such documents on their websites.

My opinion: I simply do not believe what she says because I find her to be an opportunist. Right now, she is pretending to be a progressive. She is on her record anything but this.
I simply do not find her to be trustworthy and I find her to be corporate owned and obligated. That, to me, is what her positions are: She is one of the 1% and she likes it that way.

(23,272 posts)"In the event we were ever confronted with having to interrogate a detainee with knowledge of an imminent threat to millions of Americans, then the decision to depart from standard international practices must be made by the president, and the president must be held accountable," she said. "That very, very narrow exception within very, very limited circumstances is better than blasting a big hole in our entire law."
Then, on Sept. 26, 2007, Clinton said something different. During a debate, Tim Russert asked her about the ticking bomb scenario and here's what she said: "As a matter of policy, it cannot be American policy, period." She said she met with military generals who told her there is "very little evidence that it works."
In the days after the debate, the Republican National Committee criticized her for flip-flopping, and Obama said he would oppose torture "without exception or equivocation," according to Daily News reports.
Did Clinton change position because of her talks with the generals or because of the "politics of the moment"? We can't see inside Clinton's head, so our ruling doesn't reflect on that part of the statement. But it is clear she changed her mind about the "ticking bomb" scenario. So we rate Obama's claim True.

(14,576 posts)AS PRESIDENT, SENATOR BERNIE SANDERS WILL REDUCE INCOME AND WEALTH INEQUALITY BY:
Demanding that the wealthy and large corporations pay their fair share in taxes. As president, Sen. Sanders will stop corporations from shifting their profits and jobs overseas to avoid paying U.S. income taxes. He will create a progressive estate tax on the top 0.3 percent of Americans who inherit more than $3.5 million. He will also enact a tax on Wall Street speculators who caused millions of Americans to lose their jobs, homes, and life savings.
Increasing the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $15 an hour by 2020. In the year 2015, no one who works 40 hours a week should be living in poverty.
Putting at least 13 million Americans to work by investing $1 trillion over five years towards rebuilding our crumbling roads, bridges, railways, airports, public transit systems, ports, dams, wastewater plants, and other infrastructure needs.
Reversing trade policies like NAFTA, CAFTA, and PNTR with China that have driven down wages and caused the loss of millions of jobs. If corporate America wants us to buy their products they need to manufacture those products in this country, not in China or other low-wage countries.
Creating 1 million jobs for disadvantaged young Americans by investing $5.5 billion in a youth jobs program. Today, the youth unemployment rate is off the charts. We have got to end this tragedy by making sure teenagers and young adults have the jobs they need to move up the economic ladder.
Fighting for pay equity by signing the Paycheck Fairness Act into law. It is an outrage that women earn just 78 cents for every dollar a man earns.
Making tuition free at public colleges and universities throughout America. Everyone in this country who studies hard should be able to go to college regardless of income.
Expanding Social Security by lifting the cap on taxable income above $250,000. At a time when the senior poverty rate is going up, we have got to make sure that every American can retire with dignity and respect.
Guaranteeing healthcare as a right of citizenship by enacting a Medicare for all single-payer healthcare system. Its time for the U.S. to join every major industrialized country on earth and provide universal healthcare to all.
Requiring employers to provide at least 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave; two weeks of paid vacation; and 7 days of paid sick days. Real family values are about making sure that parents have the time they need to bond with their babies and take care of their children and relatives when they get ill.
Enacting a universal childcare and prekindergarten program. Every psychologist understands that the most formative years for a human being is from the ages 0-3. We have got to make sure every family in America has the opportunity to send their kids to a high quality childcare and pre-K program.
Making it easier for workers to join unions by fighting for the Employee Free Choice Act. One of the most significant reasons for the 40-year decline in the middle class is that the rights of workers to collectively bargain for better wages and benefits have been severely undermined.
Breaking up huge financial institutions so that they are no longer too big to fail. Seven years ago, the taxpayers of this country bailed out Wall Street because they were too big to fail. Yet, 3 out of the 4 largest financial institutions are 80 percent bigger today than before we bailed them out. Sen. Sanders has introduced legislation to break these banks up. As president, he will fight to sign this legislation into law.

(598 posts)(From 2005) Sanders is the Amendment King of the current House of Representative.
Since the Republicans took over Congress in 1995, no other lawmaker not Tom DeLay, not Nancy Pelosi has passed more roll-call amendments (amendments that actually went to a vote on the floor) than Bernie Sanders.
He accomplishes this on the one hand by being relentlessly active, and on the other by using his status as an Independent to form left-right coalitions.
Here are a few examples of the amendments Sanders passed by building unusual but effective coalitions:

You do a fantastic job here at DU, pinebox. We're lucky to have you on our side. If we each do whatever we can, maybe we can get this good person elected to the presidency and make a real difference for the country.
I know the other side hates me with a passion but hey, I have passion too and I don't want any more of the same old same old in the WHite House. We've enabled it to happen for decades and as a result, people in this country are really suffering.
It's sad that so many on here think "it's about putting a woman in the White House". No, it's not, it's about empathy!
senz
(11,945 posts)I tend to go the conceptual route, thinking about fairness, equality, the importance of the individual, a just system that honors and serves all its citizens, and I think a lot about the "Founding Fathers" who are heroes of mine.
But of course, all of this has a common thread to it, and when you boil those noble concepts down to their emotional core, it is empathy. That is what we're talking about. It is also the core of the teachings of the Torah and of Jesus. Empathy underlies equality, fairness, humility, service. Empathy, if we ever get good at it, could change the human race.
Pinebox, I don't know how old you are, but you could take your deep understanding and formulate a life plan from it. It could inspire your choices, and you might end up making an important contribution to humankind, in some respect, even if it seems small at first. Joseph Campbell advised people to "follow your bliss." Makes excellent sense.

...is also impressive. But I ask you, How does she plan to actually DO what she says she wants done?
Here are some of the ways she proposes to reduce risks in the financial system (notably, this does not include restoring Glass-Steagall or something like it):
Impose a risk fee on the largest financial institutions.
Close the Volcker Rules hedge fund loophole.
Discourage excessive risk-taking by making senior bankers accountable. (me: by reducing their bonuses when their financial institutions suffer losses -- yeah, that'll larn 'em!)
Make sure no firm is ever too big and too risky to be managed effectively.
Tackle financial dangers of the shadow banking system.
Impose a tax on high-frequency trading. (me: a signature Bernie Sanders position BTW)
Now how, exactly, is she going to get any of this through the current Congress, or any Congress we are likely to see in the next few years? Don't hold back, let us know how Hillary would be able to do all of the above while Bernie would not be able to do the same with his policies.
Myself, I did not see any discussion on her Issues page of HOW she is going to shepherd these policies through a recalcitrant, Republican-led Congress. It's not a plan but merely a wish list -- at least, if we are going to use the same criteria for Hillary as for Bernie.

(11,945 posts)MAKE TUITION FREE AT PUBLIC COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.
This is not a radical idea. Last year, Germany eliminated tuition because they believed that charging students $1,300 per year was discouraging Germans from going to college. Next year, Chile will do the same. Finland, Norway, Sweden and many other countries around the world also offer free college to all of their citizens. If other countries can take this action, so can the United States of America.
In fact, its what many of our colleges and universities used to do. The University of California system offered free tuition at its schools until the 1980s. In 1965, average tuition at a four-year public university was just $243 and many of the best colleges including the City University of New York did not charge any tuition at all. The Sanders plan would make tuition free at public colleges and universities throughout the country.
STOP THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FROM MAKING A PROFIT ON STUDENT LOANS.
Over the next decade, it has been estimated that the federal government will make a profit of over $110 billion on student loan programs. This is morally wrong and it is bad economics. As President, Sen. Sanders will prevent the federal government from profiteering on the backs of college students and use this money instead to significantly lower student loan interest rates.
SUBSTANTIALLY CUT STUDENT LOAN INTEREST RATES.
Under the Sanders plan, the formula for setting student loan interest rates would go back to where it was in 2006. If this plan were in effect today, interest rates on undergraduate loans would drop from 4.29% to just 2.37%.
ALLOW AMERICANS TO REFINANCE STUDENT LOANS AT TODAYS LOW INTEREST RATES.
It makes no sense that you can get an auto loan today with an interest rate of 2.5%, but millions of college graduates are forced to pay interest rates of 5-7% or more for decades. Under the Sanders plan, Americans would be able to refinance their student loans at todays low interest rates.
ALLOW STUDENTS TO USE NEED-BASED FINANCIAL AID AND WORK STUDY PROGRAMS TO MAKE COLLEGE DEBT FREE.
The Sanders plan would require public colleges and universities to meet 100% of the financial needs of the lowest-income students. Low-income students would be able to use federal, state and college financial aid to cover room and board, books and living expenses. And Sanders would more than triple the federal work study program to build valuable career experience that will help them after they graduate.
FULLY PAID FOR BY IMPOSING A TAX ON WALL STREET SPECULATORS.
The cost of this plan is fully paid for by imposing a tax of a fraction of a percent on Wall Street speculators who nearly destroyed the economy seven years ago. More than 1,000 economists have endorsed a tax on Wall Street speculation and today some 40 countries throughout the world have imposed a similar tax including Britain, Germany, France, Switzerland, and China. If the taxpayers of this country could bailout Wall Street in 2008, we can make public colleges and universities tuition free and debt free throughout the country.

(11,945 posts)Addressing Physical Violence
We must demilitarize our police forces so they dont look and act like invading armies.
We must invest in community policing. Only when we get officers into the communities, working within neighborhoods before trouble arises, do we develop the relationships necessary to make our communities safer together. Among other things, that means increasing civilian oversight of police departments.
We need police forces that reflect the diversity of our communities.
At the federal level we need to establish a new model police training program that reorients the way we do law enforcement in this country. With input from a broad segment of the community including activists and leaders from organizations like Black Lives Matter we will reinvent how we police America.
We need to federally fund and require body cameras for law enforcement officers to make it easier to hold them accountable.
Our Justice Department must aggressively investigate and prosecute police officers who break the law and hold them accountable for their actions.
We need to require police departments and states to provide public reports on all police shootings and deaths that take place while in police custody.
We need new rules on the allowable use of force. Police officers need to be trained to de-escalate confrontations and to humanely interact with people who have mental illnesses.
States and localities that make progress in this area should get more federal justice grant money. Those that do not should get their funding slashed.
We need to make sure the federal resources are there to crack down on the illegal activities of hate groups.
Addressing Political Violence
We need to re-enfranchise the more than two million African Americans who have had their right to vote taken away by a felony conviction.
Congress must restore the Voting Rights Acts pre-clearance provision, which extended protections to minority voters in states where they were clearly needed.
We must expand the Acts scope so that every American, regardless of skin color or national origin, is able to vote freely.
We need to make Election Day a federal holiday to increase voters ability to participate.
We must make early voting an option for voters who work or study and need the flexibility to vote on evenings or weekends.
We must make no-fault absentee ballots an option for all Americans.
Every American over 18 must be registered to vote automatically, so that students and working people can make their voices heard at the ballot box.
We must put an end to discriminatory laws and the purging of minority-community names from voting rolls.
We need to make sure that there are sufficient polling places and poll workers to prevent long lines from forming at the polls anywhere.
Addressing Legal Violence
We need to ban prisons for profit, which result in an over-incentive to arrest, jail and detain, in order to keep prison beds full.
We need to turn back from the failed War on Drugs and eliminate mandatory minimums which result in sentencing disparities between black and white people.
We need to invest in drug courts and medical and mental health interventions for people with substance abuse problems, so that they do not end up in prison, they end up in treatment.
We need to boost investments for programs that help people who have gone to jail rebuild their lives with education and job training.
We must abolish civil asset forfeiture programs which allow police departments to seize property from people who have not been convicted of a crime and profit off of such seizures.
Addressing Economic Violence
We need to give our children, regardless of their race or their income, a fair shot at attending college. Thats why all public universities should be made tuition free.
We must invest $5.5 billion in a federally-funded youth employment program to employ young people of color who face disproportionately high unemployment rates.
Knowing that black women earn 64 cents on the dollar compared to white men, we must pass federal legislation to establish pay equity for women.
We must prevent employers from discriminating against applicants based on criminal history.
We need to ensure access to quality affordable childcare for working families.

(27,815 posts)We should. We ought to. We need to.
Where is the plan for actually DOING all of this?
Every time I have asked a BS supporter here how Bernie plans to implement all of his grand plans, I get the same reply: "Oh, well, he can't do it all by himself," followed by, "If a million people marched on D.C. and demanded action ...," or a lecture about how "he's on the People's side, so even if none of these things are accomplished, at least we know he tried."
The truth is that the only way a president can get things done is through compromise with the GOP - who won't magically disappear the day BS is inaugurated. And the minute the man compromised on anything in order to further his own agenda, his supporters would throw him under the bus so fast, his head would spin.

(11,945 posts)So don't be picking on sentence structure; just makes you look a tad picayune. And don't worry, Nance -- as soon Hillary's paid staff gets her proposals written up, she'll have something for you. Plus, she'll make a big deal out of every little element to maximize publicity and make it look like she thinks and cares about these things.
Bernie's had plenty of experience working both sides of the aisle in his 24 years at both houses of congress. Plus, he doesn't have the negatives of his primary opponent. Sen. Sanders is a nice person, works well with others, is true to his word, and gets things done. He is not hated by Republicans.
But yes, more than Hillary, he will need the rest of us to have his back, because he intends to make some necessary changes in order to build up America's middle class again. Those who have benefited from a rigged system will certainly resist.
Don't lump all Bernie supporters together. Maybe some will gripe if Bernie can't turn the world upside down, but most of us will back him because we know his heart (that word again) is in the right place. I volunteered in 2011 & 2012 for OFA and I understand and appreciate what Obama has been up against.
I believe that Bernie has a better chance of getting things done because he is more experienced and seasoned, less intimidated by tptb, and quite firm in his principles, convictions, and boundaries.

Hillary would impose a tax on harmful high-frequency trading and reform rules to make our stock markets fairer, more open, and transparent.
Prosecuting individuals when they break the law. Hillary would extend the statute of limitations for prosecuting major financial frauds, enhance whistleblower rewards, and provide the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission more resources to prosecute wrongdoing.
Holding corporations accountable when they break the law. As she enhances individual accountability, Hillary will make sure that corporations dont treat penalties for breaking the law as merely a cost of doing business, so that we can put an end to the patterns of corporate wrongdoing that we see too often today.
Looks to me like Hillary Clinton thinks she can just do things unilaterally... I don't see ANY details on HOW, exactly, she will be able to actually DO the things on her wish list.

(11,945 posts)Sign comprehensive immigration reform into law to bring over 11 million undocumented workers out of the shadows. We cannot continue to run an economy where millions are made so vulnerable because of their undocumented status.
Oppose tying immigration reform to the building of a border fence. Undocumented workers come to the United States to escape economic hardship and political persecution. Tying reform to unrealistic and unwise border patrol proposals renders the promise illusory for millions seeking legal status.
Sign the DREAM Act into law to offer the opportunity of permanent residency and eventual citizenship to young people who were brought to the United States as children. We must recognize the young men and women who comprise the DREAMers for who they are American kids who deserve the right to legally be in the country they know as home.
Expand President Obamas Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program to include the parents of citizens, parents of legal permanent residents, and the parents of DREAMERs. We need to pursue policies that unites families and does not tear them apart.
Authorize and substantially increase funding for the Legal Services Corporation to provide legal representation to guest workers who have been abused by their employers. Further, employers should be required to reimburse guest workers for housing, transportation expenses and workers compensation.
Substantially increase prevailing wages that employers are required to pay temporary guest workers. If there is a true labor shortage, employers should be offering higher, not lower wages.
Rewrite our trade policies to end the race to the bottom and lift the living standards of workers in this country and our trading partners. Not only have free trade agreements like NAFTA and CAFTA hurt U.S. workers, they have been a disaster for small farmers in Mexico and Central America.

(11,945 posts)Fight for pay equity for women.
Only nominate Supreme Court justices who support Roe v. Wade and the reproductive rights of women. As president, Sen. Sanders will only nominate Supreme Court justices who understand that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land and recognize the rights of women to have access to family planning services.
Make quality childcare and Pre-K available to all Americans. Sen. Sanders is working on a plan to make high-quality childcare and Pre-K available to every American, regardless of income. It is unacceptable that the cost of a quality childcare program is out of reach for millions of Americans.
Increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020. According to the most recent statistics, women make up two-thirds of all minimum wage workers. Increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour would significantly boost the wages of more than 15 million women and help close the gender wage gap.
Raise the tipped minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2023. The federal tipped minimum wage of just $2.13 an hour hasnt been raised since 1991. More than two-thirds of tipped workers are women. Increasing the tipped minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2023 would lift millions of women out of poverty and significantly reduce the gender pay gap.
Provide at least 12 weeks of paid family leave, 2 weeks of paid vacation, and one week of paid sick days to American workers.
Expand the WIC program for pregnant mothers and infants. As the Ranking Member of the Budget Committee, Sen. Sanders helped lead the effort in the Senate against Republican attempts to cut the WIC program that provides nutrition assistance to pregnant mothers, women, and infants. As president, Sen. Sanders would substantially increase funding for this program so that every low-income mother and her children receive the nutrition they need to live healthy lives.
Make healthcare a right. As president, Sen. Sanders would fight for a Medicare for All single-payer healthcare system to make healthcare a right for all Americans. If the United States joined every major country on earth and enacted a universal healthcare program, women would benefit the most. Today, women have much higher healthcare expenses than men and pay a greater portion of their healthcare costs out of their own pockets. Women make up two-thirds of the low-wage workforce and only about 23 percent of low-wage jobs provide health insurance. It is time for a Medicare for All single-payer healthcare system.
Expand Social Security. As president, Sen. Sanders will fight to expand Social Security benefits by an average of $65 a month; increase cost-of-living-adjustments to keep up with rising medical and prescription drug costs; and expand the minimum Social Security benefit to lift seniors out of poverty. Women will benefit the most by expanding Social Security. More than twice as many elderly women lived in poverty than men in 2013. Without Social Security, nearly half of all elderly women would be living in poverty.

Authored the historic Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act to improve care and increase accountability at the VA.
Co-sponsored the Post-9/11 GI Bill to allow a new generation of veterans, servicemembers and dependents to seek a college degree.
Co-sponsored the Women Veterans Access to Quality Care Act, to ensureVA facilities meet the needs of women veterans, and require every VA medical center to have obstetricians or gynecologists on staff.

(626 posts)I have enjoyed your posts since I have been coming to Du, but you seem to be grasping here. Bernie will get it done in the same manner he got the Veteran's bill done, the same way he got dozens of amenf=dments added to bills and signed into law.
DO you really think the CONservatives, who will turn out in droves to vote if Hillary is the Dem nom, will let their reps compromise with her on ANYTHING?
I am all for supporting one's candidate with gusto, but you have drifted into unhinged territory in your zeal.

Just because she has more staff to write denser verbiage, does NOT mean she has any better PLAN to push her agenda through Congress. In fact, with far less experience in Congress than Bernie has (and he has served in BOTH houses of Congress), I believe she has less chance to succeed in that area than he does.
But of course none of us can know. Whoever is the President, and we can only fervently hope it is a Democrat, will have a hell of a tough row to hoe when the time comes. In the meantime, we are choosing from among our Democratic field. I choose to go with the person who has maintained the most consistent progressive record, AND who has a proven record of accomplishment. I do acknowledge that ALL of our Democratic candidates have proven records BTW. However, her positions are often to the right of mine, especially in matters of foreign policy and economics. So I'll go for Bernie.

(11,945 posts)1) Negotiate A Better Deal. Require Medicare to use its bargaining power to negotiate with the prescription drug companies for better prices a practice that is currently banned by law. Not only would negotiation substantially reduce prices seniors and people with disabilities pay for drugs, it could save Medicare between $230 billion to $541 billion dollars over the next decade.
2) Import Prescriptions from Canada. Allow individuals, pharmacists, and wholesalers to import prescription drugs from licensed Canadian pharmacies.
Prohibit the United States from agreeing to provisions in international trade deals that would raise drug prices in the United States or extend the monopoly period when a brand name drug company has no generic competition.
Suspend the governments authority to destroy packages of imported drugs at the border until new legislation is passed ensuring that Americans can import safe and affordable drugs from Canada.
3) Restore Discounts for Low-Income Seniors.
Close the Medicare Part D donut hole for brand and generic drugs by 2017, three years earlier than under current law.
Require generic drug companies to pay an additional rebate to Medicaid if their drug prices rise faster than inflation.
Restore Medicare prescription drug discounts for low-income seniors and people with disabilities.
4) Prohibit Deals that Keep Generic Drugs Off the Market. Prohibit anti-competitive deals pay-for-delay deals between brand and generic drug makers.
5) Enact Stronger Penalties for Fraud. Terminate exclusivitya government-awarded monopoly periodfrom a drug company convicted of fraud.
6) Require Pricing and Cost Transparency.
Require drug companies to publicly report information that affects drug pricing.
Under the Sanders plan, drug makers would be required to report certain price information to the federal government and the public on their products, including the total expenditures on research and development and clinical trials, as well as the portion of their drug development expenses offset by tax credits or paid for by federal grants.
Companies would also be required to report not only the price information charged to federal payers, such as Medicare, but would also have to submit price, profit, and sales information for other countries in which the drug is sold.

Ensure that any military action we do engage in has clear goals, is limited in scope, and whenever possible provides support to our allies in the region.
Close Guantanamo Bay, rein in the National Security Agency, abolish the use of torture, and remember what truly makes America exceptional: our values.

(70,239 posts)Well, thank you OP for doing such a GREAT job in proving the point that Bernie does have GRAND ideas, but not an ounce of Substance. Your links do so well in proving just that point!
Your section on women points out 7 bills that Bernie sponsors or cosponsors, yet not a single one.. that's right NOT A SINGLE ONE, has passed either Senate, or House yet, much less the presidency or came anywhere NEAR becoming an actual law.. You are so right, the idea is there. No meat.
Your section on families and children.. Three wonderful links. All introduced, but again, that's as far as they've gone. Great ideas, no substance.
The biggie for Bernie.. Corporations, and tax breaks. you give 5x great links. How many are anywhere past the starting gate of being introduced? Yep, that's right.. a big fat ZERO again. All are right there at the starting gate of good ideas.
Healthcare.. 4x introduced.. 4x still just at introduced.
Justice Reform: 5x more great links showing those great ideas.. yep, once again, all are just in that nice starting phase of introduced.
Investment and protection of our workers: 5x proposed 5x still just proposed.
Fighting for our youth? 2 for 2
Veterans: Congratulations.. you did find one bill , S.1493 to adjust the veterans cost of living that has passed the Senate. What's better, the ONLY bill in your entire list of bills, that Senator Sanders co-sponsored was one that was proposed by Senator Johnny Isakson, a REPUBLICAAN from Georgia. The one bill is a bipartisan bill.. how ironic when the whole Bernie is the bestest argument is that he doesn't compromise. But you did get one here that has had SOME progress at least.
Protecting our Democracy) 1 for 1 just introduced.. nothing more.
Environment? Again, 5 for 5 just introduced and nothing more.
You have done such a WONDERFUL job proving our point that Bernies is a man of great ideas.. but nothing else.
You have given us 45 examples, and with only 1 exception, they are all JUST ideas. The only one that has passed the Senate is a bipartisan one that is actually proposed by a Republican.
Thank you, I was actually beginning to wonder if my supposition that Bernie is just ideas. My moment of self-doubt has now passed.

(500 posts)We post these silly things instead of taking something from his ideas or Hillary's or O'Malley's...which are what ALL of their "plans" are at this point, ideas and wish lists...and comparing, discussing, debating the pros and cons. That's the point of the OP and everyone proved it oh so well.
You can take this madness as serious as you want, but taking so much time arguing what does and does not qualify as ideas is silly. This shows what's wrong with DU: instead of picking something specific about education costs or the minimum wage implementation and discussing the idea itself, we are complaining about stupid shit.
You guys are a trip, seriously. This thread has been all all I thought it'd be. Post something about an important policy I like addiction treament and you get a few replies, but post something sarcastically meant to stir the pot and you've got a hit!

(67,782 posts)Of the 44, Sanders introduced only 18 of those, and only FOUR were introduced prior to becoming a candidate for President.
So, he "co-sponsored" (i.e., not authored) 26 of those in the list, confirming what I've been saying for months. Sanders is a follower, not a leader.
