2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumO'Malley reminds of Vilsack.
'Democrats are fortunate to have three solid presidential candidates for the 2016 Iowa Caucuses. Hillary Clinton has senatorial and state department experience and a strong stance on human rights. Bernie Sanders has mayoral and senatorial experience and is an effective champion for middle class Americans. Martin OMalley has district attorney, mayoral and gubernatorial experience and has actually done many of the things presidential candidates advocate.
Im supporting Martin OMalley in my precinct caucus. He left both Baltimore and the state of Maryland in better shape. Under OMalleys leadership, Maryland zoomed to number one in the nation in public education the same position once held by Iowa. He dramatically reduced crime and unnecessary officer-involved shootings in Baltimore. He spent money during the Great Recession on public projects that made Marylands infrastructure more competitive.
But, most importantly, Martin OMalley achieved sensible gun control. He did it with the cooperation of Republicans in the legislature and with the support of rural and western Marylanders. Martin OMalley seems to favor the practical solution over ideology. He has the sensible approach to problems often seen in good governors. In that regard he reminds me of former governor Tom Vilsack.
I hope Iowans will consider Martin OMalleys success when they join a preference group at the Iowa Democratic caucuses on Feb. 1.'

(39,961 posts)but at present he is being used to drive a wedge between Clinton and Sanders supporters.
I hate that they are using him that way, because he is strong in his own right, but the Hillary people are intent on using him to chip Sanders votes away.
winter is coming
(11,785 posts)I haven't talked to anyone IRL who's changed from Sanders to O'Malley, although I know a few people who have gone in the other direction. On the internet, I've encountered some professed Sanders supporters who don't sound like Sanders supporters, so I take it with a grain of salt.

(11,833 posts)I'm still undecided up until the time I vote in the primary in my State. I vote for who I'd most like to see as President. I don't vote trying to figure out who may be the best candidate in the general. I figure I want to make my voice heard and I'm going with who I'd most like to see as President. Right now it's still a tossup for me between Sanders and O'Malley. Poll numbers be damned.

(130,914 posts)and sorry to see that you are. I may be wrong. I'm grateful to see whomever comes 'over' to MO'M.
Seems to me there's no need to drive a wedge; it's built in.

(9,688 posts)No, Clinton isn't using O'Malley to chip away at Sanders.
You have to rethink your argument, because it's outrageously demeaning.

(11,833 posts)They went with who they thought would make the best President. Not with who a bunch of paid lackey pundits were telling them would have the best chance in the general.
I'm confident that if they most want O'Malley as President they will join his preference group at the Iowas Democratic caucuses on February 1, elleng.
I'm optimistic because they took a chance on a person named Obama because he was the most articulate, most rational and had the most clear and specific plans for how he would govern as President. And he did not let them down. In my opinion.
I believe Martin O'Malley also offers clear and specific plans, both online and during debates. And as mentioned, he has a great track record of actual governing and managing to prove it.

(62,325 posts)for your candidate.
I prefer to focus on issues rather than 'not care about offending' people. But to each their own.

(16,184 posts)Yesterday, we were discussing issues relating to the candidates' veterans proposals. The only time I saw you pop up was when you were peddling conspiracy nonsense about O'Malley just being an attack dog for Clinton.
If you want to talk issues, then actually talk issues.

(41,600 posts)who's in the Obama Administration?
Tom Vilsack, USDA Secretary
As Iowa Governor, Tom Vilsack was a leading advocate for Monsanto, genetic engineering, and factory farming. President Obama proudly lauded his new Agriculture Secretary for "promoting biotech."
Vilsack has, in fact, promoted the most controversial and dangerous forms of agricultural biotechnology, including pharma crops, plants genetically engineered to produce pharmaceuticals. When grown outdoors on farmland, where most pharma crop trials have occurred, pharma crops can easily contaminate conventional and organic varieties.
In one chilling example from 2002, a corn crop engineered by ProdiGene to produce a vaccine for pigs contaminated 500,000 bushels of soybeans that were grown in the Nebraska field the next season. Before this incident, a similar thing had happened in Iowa where the USDA ordered ProdiGene to pay for the burning of 155 acres of conventional corn that may have been contaminated by the firm's biotech plants.
ProdiGene eventually went out of business, but not before it received a $6 million investment from the Governors Biotechnology Partnership, chaired by Iowa Governor Vilsack. Vilsack didn't want any restrictions placed on experimental pharma crops. In reaction to suggestions that pharma crops should be kept away from food crops, Vilsack argued that "we should not overreact and hamstring this industry."
