Sen. Bernie Sanders dropped by Lebanon Wednesday morning to participate in the annual Veterans Day parade and speeches at Colburn Park organized by American Legion Post 22.
To my mind, if patriotism and love of country means anything, it means that we do not now, or ever, turn our backs on those who defended us, Sanders said to applause in a short speech to more than 100 people there for the ceremony. It means we keep our promise to those who kept their promises to us.
Addressing reporters after his speech, Sanders said of the day:
People are saying a very profound thank you to millions of men and women who put their lives on the line to defend our country. We know that, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan, there are men and women who have come home wounded in body and wounded in spirit, and we have a moral obligation, in a very nonpartisan way, to do everything we can to make sure that all of our veterans get the quality health care they deserve in a timely manner, and they get the benefits they are entitled to in a timely manner.
After the ceremony and before heading back to Burlington, Sanders headed over to the Lebanon Diner, which is co-owned by City Councilor Karen Liot Hill, who had also participated in the remembrance with her two daughters. Sanders, enjoying a window seat, greeted diners and ate lunch with three aides. He had the blueberry pancakes.

I really appreciate all that he's done for veterans over the years, said Peter St. Pierre, a Vietnam veteran who lives in Lebanon. I think veterans are a very important part of this country and he's been a very important part of supporting the veterans."
We do not now, or ever, turn our backs on those who defended us, Sanders said to the crowd in Lebanon.
Sanders did not answer any questions from reporters but gave a statement in support of improvements at the VA.
We have a moral obligation in a very non-partisan way to do everything we can to make sure that all of our veterans get the quality healthcare that they deserve in a timely manner, he said.
Sanders says if elected, he will expand the VA and mental health services and make comprehensive dental care available to all veterans.
