2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie Sander's demographic is young, white and male.
Today's poll from NYT/CBS show that his demographics have remained unchanged throughout his campaign. So yes, he's at 30 percentage points in polls, but that 30% disproportionately reflects a demographic that doesn't represent the democratic party as a whole.

(22,871 posts)If polls show that a candidate only appeals to one demographic as opposed to a true cross section of democratic voters, that candidate has a big problem in a primary election.

I have a "Bernie 2016" sticker on rear of my car and people are very receptive. The remark usually heard is that he is the "only one" who is for seniors. So far, and by far, most of the remarks about Hillary should not be posted because they use some pretty offensive language.

a poll of *418 Democratic primary voters*
is hardly representative of who will
vote in the next presidential election.
These polls of cherry picked demographics

I'm a White male who voted for a woman for president in 2012. But, it wasn't because of her gender.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)Because they are the ones who get drafted and fight wars. In Bernie they see that there is a much better chance they will not have to fight in a war.
Selfish? Or just plain smart?
sufrommich
(22,871 posts)late 50s now. I doubt that a draft is even on their radar.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)If not you never even had to think about it. Men are forced to sign into selective service at 18. But you wouldn't have a clue about that, would you?
sufrommich
(22,871 posts)Sander's percentages regarding demographics are literally unchanged from the beginning of his campaign. If you think it's because young, white men fear the draft,so be it.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)And saw the damage done to my friends by the warmongers who sent them to their war.
You remind me of Barabara Bush: ""Why should I bother my beautiful mind thinking about such things""
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)MineralMan
(146,311 posts)I had dropped out of college for a while and knew my draft notice would be coming, since I gave up my student deferment. So, I went to the local USAF recruiting office and talked to the recruiter there. I took the enlistment test, which I aced. I told him I had no intention of enlisting unless I got drafted.
He said, "No problem. When you get your notice to appear for a physical, come back here. I'll have you in the Air Force the next day."
I did get it and he did what he said he'd do. I ended up getting sent to Russian Language School at Syracuse University and doing interesting things during my four year enlistment.
For that, I was called a "Draft Dodger." I enlisted for four years, 1965-69, rather than being drafted for two. That was my bargain.
So, I know about the draft. Young men today aren't worried about being drafted. Warfare is increasingly being done by remote control, and there are plenty of volunteers willing to join the military. There's no need for a draft in the foreseeable future. It's not something that's on young men's minds. Yes, they have to register at 18. That's it. Wars today don't need draftees.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)I am sure all the young men are just jumping with joy knowing that MM has declared they don't have to worry about being drafted or ever being in a war because war is sophisticated now and no one ever gets hurt.
Do you listen to yourself? Don't you get it that young men hate war, want nothing to do with it, and they reject warmongers like Hillary?
MineralMan
(146,311 posts)RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)Do you actually read what you write?
I know a few Vietnam vets who went there and fought for the country and lived in the midst of the slaughter. Is it any wonder why those vets also reject Hillary?

(11,573 posts)I'very asked it three or four times of Sanders supporters who call Hillary Clinton a warmonger and hold her responsible for the war in Iraq. None of them has had the guts to answer. Let's see if you do.
Do you hold George McGovern responsible for the war in Vietnam?
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)Some more than others. Vietnam was started slowly and JFK is said to have wanted to end it. McGovern wanted it to end and others wanted to keep fighting.
Hillary supported bush. Half the Democrats did not, and I am damn proud of the fact that half our Dems were not warmongers!
redstateblues
(10,565 posts)some of the responsibility for the Iraq war by helping W the warmonger win.

(24,544 posts)So makes the whole "draft" conversation that much stranger.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)You must not be a man who never was subjected to a draft.
The young men saw who voted to send young men to Iraq, and it wasn't Bernie.
Number23
(24,544 posts)"warmonger" and the point is that men are still supporting Hillary in higher numbers making your assertions that much more fact-free and unsupported.
RobertEarl

RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)But young men, as per the OP, are favoring Bernie. Why do you think the young men favor Bernie?
I would guess that old men favor Hillary because they are just dumb?

I would guess that old men favor Hillary because they are just dumb?
Proving that age old saying about choosing who you discuss things with. Probably why I never post to you...
Done here. Thanks for this exercise in complete and utter time wasting.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)Sorry about that.
OP: Bernie Sander's demographic is young, white and male. It's actually there, in the graphic, but one does need to be able to read it. So, you're just gonna have to trust me.... and the OP, who stated: "Bernie Sander's demographic is young, white and male."
So, why is it you think young white males are Bernie's demographic?
Number23
(24,544 posts)Here is the graphic. Where does it say that Bernie's support is coming from young men? Show me ANYWHERE on this chart that what I'm saying, that Hillary has stronger support from men than Bernie, is untrue?
Here is my first post in this thread which was in response to Mineral Man (not to you) where I noted that Hillary had higher support from men than Bernie http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1251&pid=799578
Did the title of this OP dazzle you so much that you are no longer able to read and understand simple charts now?
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)First line: Men favor Hillary 46-41
Third line: 18-45 years of age favor Bernie 46-40
Read between the lines. Young men favor Bernie! Hey!! So do young women!!
I get it takes some skill to read it. The OP and everyone else gets it. You're just gonna have to trust us?
Number23
(24,544 posts)makes a bit of sense. Those are some serious "blurred lines" you're trying to read from and doing exceptionally poorly.
If Hillary is winning men -- which she is -- then men are NOT Sanders' demographic. That's exactly like trying to say that non-whites are Sanders' demographics when she is wiping the floor with him with this group.
Sounds like you need to give it a rest. Go sleep it off.
I feel your pain.
Young people will not vote much for a warmonger. Nor someone who likes to throw them in jails. They see Hillary as doing both, so she ain't getting much support. Less and less everyday. Bernie will win, because young people want real change.
Number23
(24,544 posts)else.
Good night, dear. Hope you get alot of good, DEEP rest.
giftedgirl77
(4,713 posts)As a mother of a 17 & 13 yr old son's I can tell you that none of them think about the selective service & they have to sign the paperwork at 15 when they get their permits saying they understand they will be enrolled at 18. My house is flooded with young men graduating high school this year & none of them give a shit about it.
This comes from kid's whose both parents were deployed regularly to multiple combat zones. A draft isn't something that is even considered ever.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)Young people as a whole are against war. They hate that all that money goes to bombs and not education, and only an idiot would think the world is a safe place to grow up in given all the weapons of mass destruction waiting to be launched in minutes.
That's why Bernie has so much support from the young, he represents a real change from the current dead end policies.
giftedgirl77
(4,713 posts)about being drafted because of selective services as you previously claimed. Young ppl are worried about a lot of things depending on where you live & what color your skin is. My kid's have to worry about just surviving bc of the rampant racism in this country irregardless of our social status. They will be able to go to college completely free & neither has any intention of getting anywhere near the armed forces. But survival is their top priority unlike the young white male.
