(6,409 posts)We live in an unfortunate age, and our notions about leadership show too much tolerance for the principle that the ends justify the means. We see leadership, particularly political leadership, as the ability to adapt and shift basic principles, and even core values, according to public opinion. We used to embrace leaders like Franklin Roosevelt, people who used reason to appeal to principles and convince us to do the right thing. We still embrace leaders who want us to do the right thing, as long as we already decided to do it anyway. I guess that's OK, but it seems to leave a little empty spot in our collective psyche, particularly when we speak of being the most powerful nation, the wellspring of democracy, an example to the world, etc.

(42,862 posts)Just like Bernie, GWB was a man "sticks to his guns" (even when wrong) and that's the sign of a True Leader. GWB was someone who trusted his "gut feeling" (despite any lack of evidence, or constantly changing conditions) and that was the sign he was a True Leader. I assume it's only a matter of time before Bernie is touted as someone and who can "see someone's soul" (gag me!) by looking deep into their eyes.
These are the times we live in. As the times change, so must our leaders and their approach to things. It's not as simple or cut-and-dried as Bernie's followers would have us believe. We don't live in a black-and-white world. There are many shades of gray as well, and when a candidate can recognize the differences, and adapt as needed, that's a good thing. I'd rather have a president who's willing to listen, analyze, comprehend, communicate, negotiate and work toward achieving the goals at hand. A simplistic and authoritarian "my way or the highway" approach isn't leadership. People who admire that sort of thing would probably be delighted with a Chris Christie administration.
