2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBernie stands up for AA communities, gets criticized for it (video)
This can't be posted enough. Bernie takes a day to work with the AA community, but because it's not about ISIS he gets criticized. He has a great response toward the end of the video to the reporter that asked about ISIS (10:55ish), but the whole video is more important than just that one moment.

(9,086 posts)This event today is the reason why the Clinton MSM spin machine is working overtime right now.
Repeating over and over again: Bernie can't connect with black people, "struggling mightily", instead of showing what really went down.

(3,649 posts)If this weren't an election season people would be praising Bernie for what he did today. Anything for a victory, right?

The media has worse than useless. They prop up the fascist Trump and bury the progressive Sanders. And that's coming even from the so-called liberal media like MSNBC.
It's so bad.

(3,795 posts)They MIGHT not expand their wealth as aggressively as they have been able to over the past 3 to 4 decades at the expense of everyone else. Maybe. If a progressive movement can be built out of electing Bernie, and it is so worth trying very, very hard to do that.
But, in fighting for Clinton, they are trying to maintain the status quo of the past 3 to 4 decades. Accelerated income and wealth disparity with all new income and wealth going to a very elite and privileged class (with none of it going to those who desperately need it right now).
It's simply unconscionable. They are assholes every one to fight for that in light of where we are today as a nation.

(3,649 posts)In my opinion, Bernie has nothing to apologize for. In fact, those who are criticizing him for whatever they think he did wrong today are the ones who should apologize. No candidate should ever be sorry about standing up for the rights and needs of a community.

If there are other "consequences" that you don't explain here, then why don't you attempt to do so, and why there is anything "negative" about what he said in this speech that the connotation of "consequences" implies, but does NOT lay out the way you said it here.

Avoider? That would be Hillary Clinton!
Bernie Sanders was trying to stay on topic in this speech on AA topics, the same way he was trying to stay on topic on immigration issues at NetRoots and on Social Security, etc. in Seattle.
If the CORPORATE media who have their own vested interests had their way, they'd distract him with a 100 different issues every speech he gave to not allow him to thoroughly address any topic of interest to the American public.
He DOES talk about ISIS in other contexts. A LOT better than Hillary is on H-1B visas for example where she hasn't talked about that issue for EIGHT F'ING YEARS!!

(7,393 posts)That's just baloney. He is being criticized for his tantrum about FP questions. And sadly, because of that he has taken all the focus off the AA community due to his tantrum.
That's generally why pols don't permit themselves to have public tantrums.
HerbChestnut
(3,649 posts)The subject matter of the reporter's question has nothing to do with it. The fact is, the reporter was trying to change the subject away from the AA community, and Bernie was not having any of it. The media talks about ISIS all day long and they have been for a month. Bernie has talked about ISIS numerous times on multiple formats. Today was supposed to be a day for the AA community, and Bernie wanted to make sure it stayed that way.
MaggieD
(7,393 posts)I have news for you, the press doesn't just ask presidents the questions they want asked. How naïve to think that is how it works. No one forced Bernie to have a temper tantrum, and now the story is about that. Because of Bernie. No one else.

(110,159 posts)It was a stupid demand to make. It was a given media was just flagged to be sure to speak up. It was a poor decision on his part drawing a line for the media. In business it would be a fail. As a parent? You would be a fool to try that with the kid. Sanders needed to be smarter handling media. That would also be a given with world leaders. If this is an example of Sanders ability to lead, it was a fail.
It isn't everyone else's fault.
ljm2002
(10,751 posts)...I personally saw the video, first the clip at the end when the ISIS question came up, and then the whole thing. And I saw nothing but goodness from Bernie in that video. So I don't think it hurts him at all. Therefore, I am not blaming "the work" (whatever that means), nor am I blaming his press manager or the ministers who asked that his campaign make that request to the press. I think it worked out pretty well for Bernie.
My complaint is with all the spin-meisters here at DU and elsewhere, who are misrepresenting the event (He threw a tantrum, he stormed out, etc...) and who are trying to cast it as a negative for him. This is especially ironic, since he was there to talk about issues that disproportionately affect the AA community, and the Hillary supporters have been so vocal over the last few months, claiming that Bernie has no connection with the black community. Now, when he tries (successfully) to keep focus on their issues, all of the sudden that is the absolute worst move he could have made.
Y'all can't have it both ways. Your attempts to spin this are laughable.

(47,803 posts)The press loves to fixate ion the sensational story of the day or week or month, and ignore everything else. And most poluituicians go along like good little poodles.
Suddenly it's all about fighting terror. As if suddenly AA's and the problems of poverty no longer exist. "That was sooooo last week."
And Berinie is saying NO to that mentality.

And we better warn all the people at the Daily Kos that they're now on a right-wing web site. After all, it's on the first page of the second search.

(7,393 posts)That seems to be going around today.
You should try and remember, neither Clinton or her supporters force him to make gaffes and showcase his reluctance to talk about certain issues. That's all on Bernie. He's just not a good campaigner because this is the first time he has been out of the Vermont bubble.
