Obama's Biggest Lead Over Romney Since March

Simon Jackman, Professor of Political Science, Stanford University

09/09/2012 4:23 pm

We're now 60 hours or so past the Democratic convention. It is now clear that the Democrats got the better of the convention bounces. Indeed, recent national polls suggest that the Democrats' bounce not only erased some tenuous gains by Romney, but is propelling Obama into a commanding lead. In fact, Obama is now polling stronger than at any time in the last six months.

I don't think anyone is predicting a bounce as high as 10 points are they? TroyD Sep 2012 #4

It might prove even more difficult than getting the bounce in the first place. The best hope is that the bounce is so significant that even if it loses some of its umph, it leaves Obama comfortably ahead.

If Obama can get a bounce of 10 points out of his ... lead Romney by 10 ... and he loses half that, so the polls settle in at Obama +5, that'd be huge.

I think I've seen Nate Silver say maybe 8-9 points, but I don't see it going higher than that in a polarized electorate.

But is there really any difference between 9 & 10 points? If he can get to 9, he can get to 10! I'm just sayin', that it would be great for it to bounce as high as 10 because if it does settle a bit lower than that, it gives him quite the margin.
