2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumRobert Reich absolutely roasts Hillary Clinton's campaign while praising Bernie Sanders
Its a step in the right direction and certainly far better than the Republican candidates, all of whom want to cut taxes on the rich but her proposal embodies whats wrong with her campaign so far:
1. By waiting until now to propose such a tax increase on the super-wealthy, she makes it look like a last-minute and somewhat desperate effort to attract some Bernie supporters -- which plays into the view that she doesnt really mean what she says.
2. The rate she proposes is still so far below what Bernie is suggesting that her proposal is unlikely to stir the passions of progressives, anyway. (Bernie has recommended raising the top marginal tax rate on highest earners to between 50 percent and 90 percent.)
3. As a matter of policy, theres really not much point to her proposal. A 43.6 percent rate on income exceeding $5 million a year would raise only $15 billion annually, according to her campaign far too little to fund the $1 trillion-plus spending agenda she promises will be fully paid for.
What do you think?

(7,231 posts)Possibly desperate, seemingly insincere, unlikely to move Sanders supporters, and falling short by a mile.

(52,589 posts)say we'll show 'em by raising the income tax a few percentages but until they are more willing to tax capital or fix the deregulated financial system in a real way, the billionaire class will laugh this off with their accounting firms.

I think number one on his list is so true. Sanders supporters can see what she is dong and why, but not Hillary supporters. Some people will fall for that coat of TruCoat.

The people appointed by Bernie Sanders would be like a breath of fresh air.

(1,180 posts)Is too little to late, and she doesn't propose any loophole or deduction changes that could make any proposed tax increase real.

GO for it Lucky.

(39,909 posts)That is so far below what we NEED that I originally thought it was just some sick humor.
But I now realize it is just sick politics.

(9,841 posts)The uber-rich in this country control something on the order of $50 trillion worth of assets. 50 trillion. When Hillary tells us that we can't make them cough up more than $10-$20 billion more per year, everyone knows it's complete crap. It would have been better for her sake if she had made no proposal at all.
