Greenpeace present P&G 'Sustainability Director' with Golden Axe award for deforestation
Procter & Gamble’s brazen greenwashing recognised at industry convention26 March, 2014
Wednesday 26th March, Manchester – Today 5 Greenpeace volunteers presented Procter & Gamble with the Golden Axe award for buying palm oil from companies that are responsible for destroying Indonesia’s rainforests. They presented the award at Europe’s biggest cosmetics and detergents convention, Cleaning Products Europe, at the Manchester Hilton.
As Virginie Helias, Sustainability Director for Procter & Gamble, was addressing the industry audience, Richard George, Forests Campaigner for Greenpeace UK, joined her at the podium and presented her with the award. He said:
“There were many companies in the running for this award, but P&G’s brazen claim that buying palm oil from companies that destroy the rainforest was sustainable made it the stand-out winner. That level of chutzpah needs rewarding, so we’re pleased to award Procter & Gamble with the Golden Axe award for services to deforestation.”
“Though perhaps we should have called it the ‘Brass Neck’ award,” he added.
After Richard had been physically removed from the conference hall, other Greenpeace activists in the audience continued to question Helias on P&G’s links to deforestation.
The conference attendees were also provided with a spoof brochure to accompany Helias’s presentation, explaining that, despite their protestations of sustainability and family-friendliness, Procter & Gamble are fuelling deforestation by buying palm oil from some of the most destructive companies in Indonesia.
