It was late, the football game was over and I was ready for bed. The problem was I couldn't find the remote control.
It wasn't right next to me on the couch in my hotel room and I was too lazy -- or drunk -- to dig between the cushions to look for it. So after a couple of glances, I decided to just turn the TV off manually and worry about finding the remote in the morning.
I slid my hand down the sides, ran my fingers across the top, bent down and looked along the bottom and even tried tapping the screen as if it were a 48" iPad.
Nothing.
Now, again -- I had been drinking. But I don't think Jack and Cokes were the reasons why I had no idea how to turn the TV off. As I was fumbling around looking for something that looked like a power button, it dawned on me: I hadn't manually turned off a television in years.
Eventually I grew tired of looking and decided to just unplug the damn thing and take my drunken self to bed.

personally i am blaming not remembering numbers on getting old. but... my kids have lost the remote in the tv room. all i know how to do is turn it off and on, now. forget changing channels. and they have the xbox thing hooked up to watch movies. when i babysit the niece and nephew, they are SOL watching either a kid channel or watching a movie.

(2,391 posts)I get a kick out of him telling his son to look up a word in a dictionary if he can't spell it rather than just asking someone. Our teachers did that, too, in order to help us learn. But I still don't get how I can look up a word to learn how to spell it if I can't find it in the dictionary because I can't spell it! Eventually, yes, but teachers always wanted us to look it up quickly and move on to the next lesson.
And I swear they design TVs with the controls hidden behind thin, hard-to-spot panel doors just to mess with us.

(110,159 posts)i cant read the buttons cause i never have my glasses. i do not even try.
true on the dictionary, but all the years, i keep a paperback dictionary handy, and it is so worn. between my use, and the kids, it is handy. but, honestly, not knowing how to spell a word, auto correction helps so much, and makes finding spelling so much easier.
BUT... both kids very smart and does lots of reading. so they will often argue some point, that i am clueless what the answer is. google is so the parents friend. we do not have those arguments, cause i can easily find the info, day or night. that is a godsend.

(2,391 posts)It gets a little too embarrassingly creative, at times. And I also have well-used, worn dictionaries, but still never mastered the HurryUpAndFindThatWord strategy my teachers used. I'd get distracted by other words I found while searching, too.
Ha! As for tiny lettering,... My arms are obviously shortening because the lettering can't possibly be shrinking at a continuing rate without completely disappearing! Could it?

(110,159 posts)i, too, get distracted finding new words to read. love words....
and i would lift my leg and say, i need to hook on my toes to be able to see the letters, now a days, my arms were not long enough anymore. a little giggle. yup... to all that.

(16,334 posts)I had finished one but not the other so I decided to just renew them online a few days before they were due. Well, I was unable to renew them because my card was going to expire in October and you can't renew your card online and you can't renew your books online if your card expires during the renewal period.
I squeezed in a trip to the library which isn't exactly close but not horribly out of my way.
When I got there, I was told the computers were down so they couldn't check in books. They could not check out books. They could not renew the cards either. I asked if I could give them my information and have them enter it when the system was back up since my books were now due THAT day. No, there was nothing they could do. Well, what about the fines when these books aren't checked in? "We'll take this into consideration" she said. I left one book and kept the other.
Remember in the "old days" when all you did was sign a little card and they stamped the due date in the book and you went your merry way?
The computer now controls everything you can and can't do at the library! It's all the ammo the terrorists need. Simply disable servers and life as we know it will cease to exist, lol.
Eh, I went back to the library the next day and a most pleasant librarian said they needed to work on a back up plan, that it would have been perfectly fine to take down the information since I had my card with me and the books were already checked out in my name. She removed the fine from my account and we had a little chat about computers and the old fashioned way of doing things.
This article reminded me of how dependent we are on technology!

(110,159 posts)i have actually, for the first time, checked out a book to my kindle. i love it.
that happened to us a couple weeks ago, at the library. the computer went down. and they were clever enough to write everything down. allowing the check in and check out. was out for like three days. BUT... the next time i went in there i had a late charge, a book still out. a book i never read. but... the gal was clever enough too to figure out it was during the time the computer went down. looked on the shelf. saw it there. and took off the fees.
it is a GOOD thing, to be able to use the brain, along with the technology.

(41,976 posts)Remains my favorite place to shop. Sure I have many, many books and comic books on my pad and nook, but nothing beats the feel and smell of old fashioned books.

(16,334 posts)but I don't want to keep so many books around. I have filled bookshelves as it is which has come in handy with the kids needing books for school these days.
It is SO handy to download a book! And not holding paper doesn't bother me too much. But there are books I'd rather not pay for and that's where the library comes in.
I love book stores too but those are becoming harder and harder to find. It's a shame really.

(115,103 posts)Sadly the lower price just makes me want to buy more. When I browse I end up with a giant bag, and spending too much.
Now I call and have them hold the book at the register, so there's less temptation.
