4 Ways Parents Teach Kids that Consent Doesn’t Matter

We all want our kids to learn about consent. We want them to know that “no” means “no” and only an enthusiastic “yes” means “yes” as they grow older and get into sexual relationships. But I think the things we might be missing is that we’ve been undermining the idea of consent since they were very young. And so, even when we get to the point of explicitly teaching them about it, it’s really not that strong of a teaching because all of our other interactions with them have possibly undermined the idea of consent.

My former mother in law was very bossy. She was tickling my husband and wanted me to join in. I said firmly, "No, I won't join you. Tickling people is sadistic and cruel." My husband and I were both in college. Young adults.

I have been subjected to the dissing of my perceptions, forced to kiss old people and other things like she was talking about in the video.

I think serious ticklers are closet sadists. Same as bullies who pick on people and say "Can't you take a joke?" or "I was only kidding" when they were being cruel, as a cover-up for their sadistic behavior.

I guess I was ahead of the curve in this area. I always taught my son that he has the absolute right to turn down anything he doesn't feel comfortable doing.

This teaching is also very useful in drug and alcohol avoidance, and resisting peer pressure.
