DU Community Help
Related: About this forumHi, I'm GliderGuider
I took the handle because I used to be passionate about flying sailplanes.
I'm Canadian. I don't make any secret of my real name which is Paul Chefurka, though I prefer the adopted name Bodhi.
This is a reasonable facsimile of the appearance of my body at the moment:
I hope you are enjoying yourself on DU, whoever you are!

(63,645 posts)Do you fly a sailplane from inside the sailplane, or it a remote-controlled type-thing that is up in the air while you are safely on the ground?

(21,088 posts)My longest duration flight was 7 hours. Longest cross-country distance 300 km, all done in thermal lift near Ottawa.
One of my favourite planes was the Pilatus B4:
Even though it tried real hard to kill me once... That made me reconsider my hobby aspirations.

(8,556 posts)But whenever I see your screen name I think of the Netherlands. I guess that's because their pre-Euro currency was called the 'guilder.' I always read your screen name as 'GliderGuilder.' I think I eventually noticed that it was 'guider' and not 'guilder' but I've never been able to shake the association with the Netherlands.
Anyway, good day

(21,088 posts)I spent a year living in the Netherlands when I was a kid, so I totally get it

(21,088 posts)It was foisted on me by the daughter of my previous partner, who housed it in my home office without my consent. Smelly damn thing, as bad as a ferret. Word of advice about Sugar Gliders - don't ever get a nocturnal pet that really really needs human bonding...
Cute, though.

(135,060 posts)told her no way as we didn't need another creature in the house in addition to our middle age lab, Cusco. I really meant it and yet:
Meet the sugar gliders replacement.

(8,571 posts)Nice to meet you. My husband will be going back to Canada next month on Business. I've never been but would love to go! Maybe after our daughter is graduated from school, I can make the trip with him. She will graduate next year

(21,088 posts)My partner just moved up to Ottawa after spending 15 years in Los Angeles (yeah, she said WTF too) and says we're not nearly as cold and constricted a people as when she lived here 30 years ago. "Warm Canadian" still seems like an oxymoron to me, though I do what I can to dispel the stereotype.

(21,088 posts)I was on both Audio Asylum and Audiogon. Lots of high-end gear went through my room for a bunch of years, especially uber-tweaky tube gear.

(21,088 posts)I re-united with my twin flame two years ago, after losing track of her for 30 years. My universe changed dimensions in a Facebook Instant, and ever since I can't seem to get this grin off my face. I'm glad it shows.

(21,088 posts)I love new opportunities to introduce myself to the community. It's a very big group of people, and we often stovepipe ourselves into particular groups or forums, so we don't always get a chance to meet people who might stay in the less-traveled groups.
I'm most often a denizen of Energy&Environment with occasional side-trips to the more spiritually-oriented groups, but my activity on the Big Boards is limited to drive-by comments As a Canadian progressive I don't have much comment on the American political scene aside from the occasional "Oh dear!"
It's good to meet you, and I hope this place is as good a home for you as it's been for me.
