I'm glad they have people at the Brookings Inst. figuring things like that out, because I don't think I'd be able to!

This is complicated stuff, and that's why we need somebody with decades of experience, like Bernie.

When reading an article about his educational policy a couple days ago, I was struck by how his proposed law hit the nail right on the head: it forbade colleges and universities from using money on administrative positions. This is one reason higher ed is so expensive now: they have a bloated hierarchy. This "business model" is what is being pushed by the regional accrediting boards, and academics don't have a clue of how to run a business. It just sounds good, but it's really a disaster. I feel qualified to say that, as I spent decades in business, followed by decades in higher ed.

"For the purposes of this Agreement…

(b) 'services' includes any service in any sector except services supplied in the exercise of governmental authority;

(c) 'a service supplied in the exercise of governmental authority' means any service which is supplied neither on a commercial basis, nor in competition with one or more service suppliers."

became effective in 1995. There should have been a discussion n the media - we never had that here. Even though it effects almost everything and basically nails the future into an economic model which frankly, is impossible - its unworkable-

We should have had a national referendum on the changes, but didn't.

Now that definition of scope is basically attacking public education and health care all around the world. If you search on the last part of it you'll find a great deal of writing about it outside the US, its very very controversial.

For example, public education's continued existence is said to be threatened by it by organizations like the European university Association.

I had no idea. How weird that this be in such an agreement, yet be unworkable.

Anyway, thanks for educating me on this. I am in public education.

the Indian press is full of stuff about GATS, WTO and education.

How bad it is to commoditize education.

There was virtually nothing in the US media in 1993-1995 - at least that I remember.

Healthcare in Canada only was grandfathered in because its completely free. thats the only reason its still in existence. If there were private for profit doctors who charged money - they would have lost it long ago.

You may see a lot of things that look like cover ups of this. They are.
