Why you値l see painted fiberglass donkeys all over Philly in July

It is a part of the Donkeys Around Town program by the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee. The donkeys will be placed around Philadelphia for people to find and take photos with during the convention.

Local artists came together to paint the donkeys, and each artist painted two. The delegates of each state were able to choose six items to have on the donkey, and the artists were required to choose at least three of the items but could include more.

Shelley looked at different patterns on Native American pottery to create the artwork on the Oklahoma donkey. She looked at work from the Cherokee tribe and improvised her own style within the patterns as well.

“Donkeys Around Town” was cooked up by ex PA Governor Ed Rendell. The idea is to have painted donkey sculptures for each state and territory to be placed around Philadelphia to celebrate this summer’s Democratic National Convention in our city. The Governor got Caryn Kunkle to orchestrate all of it and one of the artists she recruited is my great friend and art school roommate Edgar Jerins, who got the Nebraska and Kansas donkeys. He told me he won the jackpot by getting to paint the Kansas donkey, because who can beat the Wizard of Oz for great subject matter? And by painting Nebraska’s Chief Standing Bear, Edgar creates an iconic portrait of tolerance and good will for Democrats everywhere.
