Excerpt:
US Senator Bernie Sanders delivered a video message Saturday to the left wing Knesset party Meretz, who plan to hold a conference on Sunday to mark "50 years of occupation."
June 5 marks the start of the historic Six-Day War Israel fought in 1967 against the neighboring states of Egypt, Jordan and Syria. Following the end of the conflict, Israel captured the entirety of Jerusalem, the West Bank, Gaza and the parts of the Golan Heights.
Sanders began his comments by describing Meretz as "Israel's most prominent political organization," adding that the party stands "for many of the same values that progressives are fighting for here in the United States and throughout the world."
Sanders called for an "international movement" that fights for equality, reminding viewers that "real change comes from below and not from on top."
The speech's substance then switched to the Mideast peace process, with Sanders professing that it was still possible to "change the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
"We are now in the 50th year of Israel's occupation, an occupation which denies basic Palestinian rights while failing to deliver Israel real security," said Sanders.
The senator also said that many agree with him when he states: "This occupation must end."
Sanders noted that peace "means security" for both the Israelis and the Palestinians, and "it means supporting self-determination, civil rights and economic well-being for both peoples."
