Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont raised more than $24 million for his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in the last three months, a significant sum that was fueled by a torrid pace of online donations: more than a million so far.

Sanders advisers, in announcing the fund-raising tally on Wednesday night, also said that the senator had more than $25 million in cash on hand.

Mr. Sanders’s advisers said they did not have data yet on the proportion of the donations that were $200 or less — a measure of grass-roots support and of his popularity among Americans who are not wealthy. More than 76 percent of his donations were $200 or less in the second-quarter campaign finance report.

The onslaught of online donations, collected since May, came at a faster clip than the Internet fund-raising operation of President Obama’s 2008 campaign. Mr. Obama did not pass the mark of a million contributions until the Democratic primaries were under way in the winter of 2008, according to Obama fund-raising solicitations at the time. Mr. Sanders has also amassed 650,000 contributors, well more than Mr. Obama had at the comparable point in that campaign cycle.

Ahead of primaries, Sanders raises more than $24 million in third quarter

Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders said Wednesday that he had raised more than $24 million during the past quarter, a robust take fueled by small online donations that have come at a faster clip even than those President Obama collected in his campaign.

The total value of Sanders’s haul is expected to be eclipsed by Hillary Rodham Clinton but ensures that the senator from Vermont can run a vigorous campaign against the once-formidable front-runner heading into the first nominating contests early next year.

As of Wednesday night, Clinton officials had not disclosed how much her campaign had raised during the past three months. Aides to Sanders said they expected his total could grow considerably in the final hours before the close of the quarter at midnight. In the previous quarter, Clinton’s campaign raised $47.5 million, compared with $15.2 million by Sanders.

Sanders’s campaign said it now has more than $25 million in the bank, a reflection of a more thrifty campaign than Clinton’s and one that has yet to start airing television ads, as the former secretary of state has.

get more annoyed than convinced.

Sanders has said from the start that he will not be able to match funds, but he will be able to raise enough to run a competitive and winning campaign.
