The Trump administration has turned bigotry into policy in Puerto Rico

By Editorial Board March 26 at 7:11 PM

EIGHTEEN MONTHS after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, the federal government continues in its failure to adequately take care of the islandís needs. The latest indignity to residents who have yet to fully recover from damage caused by the hurricane and the governmentís pathetic response is a sudden cut to food-stamp benefits. Congressional neglect and animus from the administration are responsible for hardships that would never be tolerated if the American citizens being harmed lived on the mainland and not in a U.S. territory that lacks voting representation in Washington.

About 43 percent of Puerto Ricoís residents have seen cutbacks to their food-stamp assistance because Congress missed the deadline for reauthorization of additional aid that had been provided in the wake of Maria. A searing report by The Postís Jeff Stein and Josh Dawsey detailed the impacts of the cuts: HIV patients made to sit in soiled diapers that health-care workers canít afford to replace, families forgoing meat and vegetables, worrying if they can afford milk and eating less. A significant portion of those receiving food stamps, research shows, are children, elderly or disabled. ďItís very hard. It is so unfair. That cut is going to kill us,Ē said the administrator of a clinic that treats HIV-positive men with severe health complications.

Now that Congress is back in session after a week-long recess, it hopefully will take action to restore the benefits as part of a broader disaster-relief package. That congressional action is needed underscores the fundamental difference ó and unfairness ó of how Puerto Rico is treated by the federal government. Puerto Rico receives money through a block grant that requires regular renewal and that provides smaller benefits than those that are allotted to states.

A further challenge is the seeming hostility emanating from the Oval Office. President Trump at first vowed to reject the food-stamp funding and, according to The Postís report, has pushed for ways to limit federal support to Puerto Rico. ďHe doesnít want another single dollar going to the island,Ē said a senior administration official quoted by The Post.

Mr. Trumpís empathy deficit is well known by now, as is the favoritism he displays toward states that tend to vote Republican. But for the government to turn its back on the more than 3 million citizens who have made Puerto Rico their home is essentially turning his bigotry into official policy. And that is a travesty.

I am sure of this. He is a combination of sociopathy, sadism and narcissism. Not a good mix for "the leader of the free world".

He is killing the ACA and causing Americans to to bankrupt, become sicker and die out of spite for Obama's ACA.

He is hurting Puerto Ricans because "their needs ruined his budget" he told the mayor of Sau Juan, Puerto Rico when he was down there throwing paper towels at hurricane survivors last year (saw her tonight on MSNBC).

He is too mentally ill to be president and should never have been allowed to run for office. He should be in a padded cell.
