Former Georgia governor candidate Stacey Abrams (D) is speaking out against calls for an entertainment industry boycott of the state over its new abortion legislation.
Despite her disapproval of Georgia's strict new "heartbeat" abortion ban, Abrams said Wednesday that a boycott is not "the most effective, strategic choice for change."
"I respect the call for a boycott on Georgia, but I do not believe it is the most effective, strategic choice for change," the Democratic rising star tweeted. "However, I know the perpetrators of #HB481 - most of them men - will not be moved by protest. In fact, they want the ability to demonize the film industry while profiting from its presence."

(58,785 posts)politics is not a thoughtful response to this.
Imo, people should consider that Stacey might just be right about Georgia politics, the hardening effect on attitudes this will have, and that it will be used by hard-core RW politicans to their benefit. That in no way requires anyone to deny that others are taking appropriate principled actions.
After all, Stacey needs all the liberalism and open-mindedness, and diminution of RW fear and anger, Georgia can muster if she is to run for governor and win in 2024. She should know.

(52,476 posts)NC boycott didn't work because the legislature changed their minds, it worked because McCrory lost his seat. That loss happened, in part, because the NCAA took away basketball tournament games from Greensboro as did the ACC. Trust me it was a huge deal here.

(58,785 posts)radical liberal socialist commie Hollywood Democrats threatening them would do anything but make Georgia's deep-red voters double down on their rejection and vote for cynical politicians feeding off it are deluding themselves.
I mean, really? When did it ever? "Resist!" didn't start with us. Hard-core conservatives have been fearing and battling liberalism for as long as our liberal democracy has existed.
Btw, I'm from Georgia and I'm not happy that she's not running for the senate. Her right, but I'm afraid of what could happen if we don't get control of the senate and she's pretty much on my shit list right now. But she knows her Georgia politics.
