WASHINGTON, D.C. In response to an NBC news story confirming Vice President Biden's support for the Hyde Amendment, EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock released the following statement:
At a time when reproductive rights are under consistent attack, its unacceptable that a major Democratic nominee supports the Hyde Amendment. This amendment, which blocks federal funding for abortion services with few exceptions and effectively bans abortion for women on Medicaid, which has a disproportionate impact on young women and women of color. Americans overwhelmingly support womens rights to make their own health care choices and Democrats made repealing the Hyde Amendment part of our 2016 platform. We hope that Vice President Biden will reconsider this position and what it means to millions of women. Theres simply too much at risk.

(40,209 posts)I am upset about it. The Hyde Amendment discriminates against the most vulnerable of women. Does he not see that?
Biden has been my number 3 choice, but he is off my list entirely unless he is the nominee and there is no choice or else declares he was wrong and changes his mind.

(25,183 posts)Barack Obama signed an executive order to insure that benefits under the ACA would not be used for abortion.
That was this century.

Seriously, the main issue is the Opioid epidemic. It has touched everyone. Meanwhile, the Farm Services Administration is advertising constantly for counselors re: addiction and suicide.

(25,183 posts)what does any of that have to do with the issue of taxpayer-funded abortion?
My contention is, rural America is uncomfortable with paying for abortion, and they're OK with the Hyde Amendment, and Joe Biden is OK with it, too, so he has a chance to convince some rural Americans to vote for him if they're dismayed by Trump.
Nobody likes the opioid epidemic.

and the problem was not support for abortion rights but the attacks on the election . and other right wing voter suppression tactics.

(25,183 posts)in places that are OK with taxpayer funded abortions. That's not the case with the "blue wall" states that Trump narrowly grabbed. Do you remember that Bart Stupak was one of the leading Democratic members of the House who got President Obama to sign an executive order stating that no ACA money would be used for abortion? He was from Michigan.
I have trouble seeing how Russians could flip a vote from Hillary to Trump out in rural areas. About all the Russians did was discourage pissed-off Berniebots from voting for Hillary.

(25,183 posts)it was urban and suburban areas that had a lot of PO'd Berniebots. I don't think Jill Stein got a lot of votes in flyover country outside of the bigger towns.

(16,887 posts)I am a long time supporter and contributor of both groups But please understand that Emily's List exists as a PAC to make sure Politicians are elected that are Pro-choice. They have to stay consistent to this mission. Planned Parenthood has both their non-profit and health provider arm and then their PAC arm for political objectives.
I believe that Joe Biden is Pro-Choice and even Emily's List knows this. But they have to be opposed to the Hyde Amendment and therefore made this statement.
I urge everyone to keep a very important fact in mind: The candidate taking on Trump will need to win over moderates and yes, if Biden is Pro-Choice but supports the Hyde Amendment (assuming that is in fact his exact position) which has to do with Federal Funding of Abortion services, this is perhaps the political choice he has to make in order to be the President to all Americans and a compromise that doesn't change the legal support of abortion services that organizations like Planned Parenthood can provide to those women who are on Medicaid or are lower income.
I don't see this as a reason to say Biden isn't a qualified candidate. In fact, I see it as maybe something that makes him more viable to beating Trump and the right wing. I have no doubt that Biden is Pro-choice and would as President nominate Judges that uphold Roe v Wade.

(11,561 posts)Wealthy women will always have access to abortions. This amendment singles out the most vulnerable women, as though so many of their lives arent difficult enough, to be discriminated against in a way that changes their lives forever. If abortion is legal, why single them out?
