Democratic Primaries

I absolutely love this op-ed from the New York Times!
By Farhad Manjoo
ts early, but this much is true: Elizabeth Warren is running the most impressive presidential campaign in ages, certainly the most impressive campaign within my lifetime.
I dont mean that the Massachusetts senator is a better speaker than anyone who has ever run, nor a more strident revolutionary, nor as charismatic a shaper of her public image. Its not even that she has better ideas than her opponents, though on a range of issues she certainly does.
Im impressed instead by something more simple and elemental: Warren actually has ideas. She has grand, detailed and daring ideas, and through these ideas she is single-handedly elevating the already endless slog of the 2020 presidential campaign into something weightier and more interesting than what it might otherwise have been: a frivolous contest about who hates Donald Trump most.
Warrens approach is ambitious and unconventional. She is betting on depth in a shallow, tweet-driven world. By offering so much honest detail so early, she risks turning off key constituencies, alienating donors and muddying the gauzy visionary branding that is the fuel for so much early horse-race coverage. Its worth noting that it took Warren months of campaigning and reams of policy proposals to earn her a spot on the cover of Time Magazine. Meanwhile, because they match the cultures Aaron Sorkinian picture of what a smart progressive looks like, Beto and Buttigieg whose policy depth can be measured in tossed-off paragraphs are awarded fawning coverage just for showing up male.

(713 posts)I am still Undecided, but Warren would probably be my choice if I had to vote today. She is smart, thorough, studied, and articulate. I know that some do not like that she comes off as a Teacher, a Professor who lectures, but I view this as a positive. We are ready for a smart candidate. Anyway, Elizabeth Warren is great.

(53,410 posts)She is understandable and doesnt talk down to people. On the contrary, she puts them on her level, and she puts herself on theirs. Its a win win.
Not an easy feat!
If she were talking to intellectuals she would sound like them. That is brilliant.

(10,270 posts)On edit- my concerns are twofold:
Foreign policy exp seems somewhat lacking...
Does she have the moxy to throw down with a Democratic Congressional Majority much more concerned with re-election prospects, than voting the right way on big ideas that might not be fully understood by the Locals?,...Obama DID, and made it known to congress that by hell or high water , health care WAS GONNA GET DONE, and if you can't manage to get yourself re elected on that AS A DEMOCRAT, well...then on your own head be it.
Because we're talking about a democratic presidency, let's not let it be lost on us that one of the necessary (if unfortunate) skills required, IS the ability to herd fucking Cats.
Obama had it, and I think Biden does as well (and to be fair, Biden might be the reason Barrack was as good at it as he was). It's about expierence, yes, but also about attitude and the arrogance to believe that 'well, of COURSE the cats will go where I want (because theyre smart enough to know what will happen to them if they damnwell DONT.).

Some people say that there will be jobs designing robots and writing intelligent code. Those people have not seen the "smart" machine effort that is taking place as I write. The "smart machine" concept has machines design, build, repair and operate other machines, sort of like Terminator but not remotely as scary. There will be for a while 10-15% of well trained workers that will still have jobs, but that will eventually and permanently drop to 3-4%, if not a lot less than that. That small group will be "machine masters", people capable of thoughts and actions that even the smartest machines can't duplicate.
What politicians need to start doing in envisioning jobless societies and how they work in an equitable fashion.

(31,261 posts)The problem that I see is that no political body is planning for what is to come. It won't take a century. Look at cellphones and cars for example. 15 years ago cellphones were pretty primitive, today they are supplanting some of the decisionmaking we used to have to do on a daily basis. Fifteen years ago, driverless cars were a science lab fantasy, today we have them and within ten years, they will supplant our daily driving decision-making. Just five years ago Banks and grocery stores had two times the employees they have today.

in AI (supercomputer 'Watson' on Jeopardy in 2011 and more) and I wondered why liberal media, advocates and online forums weren't discussing the impact on jobs and society all that much. After a couple years posting articles and receiving mediocre response I dropped the idea. I don't know what it will take for governments to seriously address this enormous disruption.
So far candidate Andrew Yang is the most visible person focused on the issue, especially the imminent decline of employment for humans, UBI and what can be done about the future. The entire subject is overwhelming and can be detrimental to life and health if you let it.

(31,261 posts)And yes, Yang is the only candidate talking about it. This issue may not be as destructive to life on earth as climate change if we don't get the right solutions, but it is very, very close in potential severity.
