Sanders: Biden 'owes the country an apology' on 'civility' remarks

<snip>

"Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Sunday again called on former Vice President Joe Biden to apologize for touting his relationships with segregationists, saying Biden’s former colleagues participated in a “disgusting system.”

“It is one thing to work with people you have fundamental disagreements with, it’s another to kind of extol those relationships,” Sanders said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday. “You cannot be extolling people who really were part of a disgusting system.”

“I think Joe owes the country an apology on that,” Sanders said, adding “Do I think Joe Biden is a racist? Absolutely not.”

Sure, rush to get on the bandwagon, Sanders... Self-serving does not begin to describe.

And lest the Bernie supporters rush to excoriate me, this is the FIRST critical post I've made about Sanders--either during this cycle or during the run up to the 2015-16 primaries and election.

You don't make the world a better place by stooping to your opponent's level. I don't know whether Biden should apologize or not, I was just commenting that Bernie gets criticized for everything around here, including the letter next to his name apparently. But you're right about people being over sensitive these days. It's almost impossible for a politician to say something without someone or some group getting offended by it.

Shame on you Bernie for playing your same divisive games

He obviously doesn't care about Hillary supporters, and he will see that when those Hillary supporters vote for any of the other Democratic candidates in the primary

In addition, if he thinks that will work out for him if there is an open convention, he will be in for a big surprise I think

There is a reason he is not able to move out beyond his base, and even there he is losing support to Elizabeth Warren, who is not only far more intelligent, but can think outside the box, with specifics how to accomplish things, instead of the same old vague sound bites, without how they would be realized yet alone paid for

and one of the people interviewed made a statement that struck me. It was to the effect that in politics you can disagree with someone, sometimes vehemently and also find their position totally morally repugnant, but that shouldn't make you enemies at the end of the day, it make you opponents.

That is the civility Joe was attempting to convey. It's the ability to talk to someone who's views you literally hate and still move your position forward. It's one of the reasons why LBJ was able to move forward on so many civil rights issues. He would get angry inches from people's faces and sometimes poke a finger in their chest, but at the end of the day he had the votes he needed to move the country forward. So unlike the type of divisive, confrontational bullying we have from the present administration.

This where calls for "civility," are misplaced. The problem isn't that politicians aren't being polite enough to each other. The problem is that there are two many things that each side is absolutely unwilling to budge in and therefore no compromise is possible.

Democrats often blame Republicans for this, but there are issues we absolutely refuse to budge on ourselves, like abortion. I agree with our position on abortion. But the fact that we think we are absolutely right and the others are absolutely wrong is the very thing that makes compromise impossible, Because they believe the same about their position.

How do you compromise between two opposing visions of absolute right?

I'm sure a handful of people posting on an internet forum knew the inner workings of Bernie's campaign staff. Enough with the conspiracy theories. All you have to do is look at the vote totals. Gary Johnson ran on the Libertarian Party ticket and doubled or tripled Jill Stein's votes in every state, including the key swing states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Gary Johnson's support almost certainly came from would-be Trump supporters just as much as Jill Stein's support came from would-be Hillary supporters. Add up all 3rd party votes (which, btw, there were several others that ran on conservative platforms that likely siphoned votes from Trump) and add them to the candidate you think those people would have otherwise voted for, and Trump still would have won those states, probably by larger margins.

In no way did Joe Biden 'extol' the virtues of segregationists. That's a ludicrous lie on its face. Bernie Sanders should be more concerned with Elizabeth Warren's rise in the polls at Bernie's expense. Which is not btw a false media narrative.

Joe will continue to be lambasted because this is the fate of any frontrunner. He's getting it from Republicans and Dems. How he withstands and reacts to the poisoned arrows will go a long way in determining his nomination for 2020 and his ultimate success in the General. Because whatever we're hearing now will be 1000x worse for any of our candidates in the GE.

This is the political run-the-gauntlet moment that our candidates dash through each election cycle. It's not pretty to watch or hear and the loudest voices run the risk of shooting themselves in the foot with the ugly. Karma is a bitch!

However, it is what it is.

Bernie: “You cannot be extolling people who really were part of a disgusting system.”

I have no problem with and take much joy in the overthrow of Somoza. He was a pig. But the system put in place to replace his dictatorship was odious too. IOW 'disgusting.' I married a refugee from Nicaragua. So did my younger brother. I've met these people and heard their stories. @#$% the Sandanistas and Ortega. They're pigs also.

And from my experience that whole “here, there, everywhere, the Yankee will die,” chant they took up in Bernie's presence is hilariously wrong. The Nicaraguans don't want to kill the Yankee. They want to marry them.
