Lots of good experienced people at all ages were at the helm when my hometown got hammered by a tornado (Joplin MO). The experiences in dealing w/ the aftermath of this particular tornado couldn't ever prepare anyone on dealing w/ such a massive disaster (over 7000 homes wiped out). So handling a tornado (probably an ef1 or ef2) should not the only criteria.
And personally, I think he's doing fine. Being a city manager means that you're literally dealing with just about every single entity on earth, w/ regard to South Bend (governor, senators/house representatives, town council, public, etc.). I daresay that there are some representatives currently in the US Congress who have zero experience in dealing with the public.
I've heard of some republican reps who have never still had a town hall meeting w/ their voters...do they need time and experience too?

(43,475 posts)He is trapped in ruby red Indiana.
Even his congressional district has been gerrymandered to Trump +20.
His best hope is a cabinet post, or (and he would never do this) move to Blue/Purple state.

(2,113 posts)I was saying that fate is really working against him and since bad things usually happen in threes. All this stuff going on in his town is going to make it really hard for him to campaign as he needs to without drawing intense criticism from the people he serves.

(2,113 posts)my post was not intended in a negative way. It was more of a "good grief, what's this poor guy going to have happen next?"
But if I'm being serious, like I was on the other thread...I don't see how he recovers from this for this race. He had an uphill battle before the shooting. It's going to take months and months to deal with that at home. If he tries to campaign in the way he NEEDS to in order to be competitive then he WILL be accused of neglecting his duties at home. That could lead to very angry and volatile protests and even riots. If he comes across at all like he cares more about winning this election than fixing his own town that will be how he is forever remembered and his political career is likely over. He already had a problem with black voters, who are the core of the base. Because there were already issues that gave those voters pause about him, in all honesty there is probably not much he can do to reverse that now. His best bet for his political future is to suspend his campaign, at least temporarily, and try to deal with this issue and then consider re-entering later or running for a local race if he is able to later in the year.
Do I genuinely feel badly for him? Yes, I do.
Do I think it's in the best interest for his long term career for him to either drop out of suspend his campaign to deal with the problems in his town? Yes, I do.
Am I trying to be mean or snarky or attacking Buttigieg? No. I have sincere empathy for what he is dealing with.
