To others, it matters.

I don't think she was "trying to say" anything about Biden. She asked him a question about his record. And if he can't handle a gentle question from a fellow Democrat about his civil rights record on a debate stage in June 2019, he's going to have a hard time further along in the campaign. Civil rights is important, a substantial portion of the Democratic base cares about and will not appreciate being told not to bring it up or expect our candidates to address it because it might make some white voters uncomfortable.

As for finding it "opportunistic," did you find anyone else on that stage "opportunistic" because they challenged anyone else up there with them? Or is it only "opportunistic" for the black female candidate to discuss civil rights in a debate?

86. What part of what Harris said is a lie or says that Biden "coddled and praised segregationists"?
Thu Jun 27, 2019, 11:47 PM
Jun 2019
HARRIS: I do not believe you are a racist. And I agree with you when you commit yourself to the importance of finding common ground, but I also believe — and it is personal, and it was actually very hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputation and career on the segregation of race in this country.

And it was not only that, but you also worked with them to oppose busing. And you know, there was a little girl in California who was a part of the second class to integrate her public schools, and she was bused to school every day. And that little girl was me. So I will tell you that, on this subject, it cannot be an intellectual debate among Democrats. We have to take it seriously. We have to act swiftly. As attorney general of California, I was very proud to put in place a requirement that all my special agents wear body cameras and keep those cameras on.

BIDEN: A mischaracterization of my position across the board. I did not praise racists, that is not true. Number one. Number two, if we want to have this campaign litigated on who supports civil rights and whether I did or not, I’m happy to do that. I was a public defender. I didn’t become a prosecutor. I came out and left a good law firm to become a public defender when, in fact, when, in fact, when, in fact, my city was in flames because of the assassination of Dr. King. Number one, number two. Excuse me — as the vice president of the United States, I worked with a man who, in fact, we worked very hard to see it to, we dealt with these issues. And in a major, major way. The fact is that in terms of busing, the busing, I never — you would have been able to go to school the same exact way because it was a local decision made by your city council. That’s fine. That’s one of the things I argued for, that we should not be — we should be breaking down these lines. So the bottom line here is, look, everything I have done in my career, I ran because of civil rights. I continue to think we have to make fundamental changes in civil rights. And those civil rights, by the way, include not just African Americans but the L.G.B.T.Q. communities.

HARRIS: But Vice President Biden, do you agree today, do you agree today that you were wrong to oppose busing in America then? Do you agree?

BIDEN: I did not oppose busing in America. What I opposed is busing ordered by the Department of Education. That’s what I opposed.

HARRIS: It’s a failure of states to integrate public schools in America. I was a part of the second class to integrate Berkeley, California, public schools almost two decades after Brown v. Board of Education.

BIDEN: Because your city council made that decision. It was a local decision.

HARRIS: That’s where the federal government must step in, that’s why we have the Voting Rights Act, the Civil Rights Act. That’s why we need to pass the Equality Act, it’s why we need to pass the E.R.A. Because there are moments in history where states fail to preserve the civil rights of all people.

And, fyi - I don't know who you think you're talking to and you may be used to addressing with other people this way, but I suggest you change your language and tone if you expect to engage any further with me.

I blame Louis CK, the often foul-mouthed comedian for modeling that kind of language. It may be "cool" and "postmodern", but that's the problem. Postmodern cynicism is what gave us Trump. Many are moving on from such language. Needless to say, the Biden supporter sounded pretty darn racist. Is Joe Biden cultivating such people? Is he doing the Republican dog whistle thing? I'd like to think he's simply not aware of it — and that out of touchness is concerning.

She misrepresented what Biden said, too. What a ridiculous diversion. So much for this being an election about the future.

This is what she said:

"I do not believe you are a racist.

As attorney general of California, I was very proud to put in place a requirement that all my special agents wear body cameras and keep those cameras on.""

Fri Jun 28, 2019, 05:19 PM
Jun 2019

While Biden’s recent comments made the news, far less attention has been paid to the former vice president’s actual record. In the 1970s, then-Senator Biden was a fierce critic of Delaware’s attempts to bus students in an effort to integrate its schools. In a recently unearthed interview from 1975, Biden said, quote, “We’ve lost our bearings since the 1954 Brown v. School Board desegregation case. … To 'desegregate' is different than to 'integrate.'” He went on to say, quote, “The real problem with busing is that you take [white] people who aren’t racist, people who are good citizens, who believe in equal education and opportunity, and you stunt their children’s intellectual growth by busing them to an inferior school,” unquote. CNN recently revealed that in 1977 Biden wrote a letter to the segregationist Senator James Eastland thanking him for supporting his anti-busing legislation.

Here's the full quote.

HARRIS: And I’m going to now direct this at Vice President Biden. I do not believe you are a racist. As attorney general of California, I was very proud to put in place a requirement that all my special agents wear body cameras and keep those cameras on.

...

Thu Jun 27, 2019, 10:31 PM
Jun 2019

The federal government can't regulate what every city council does, BUT the federal government does have an obligation to step in when school boards and city councils and state governments violate the 14th Amendment rights of American citizens and when they directly defy court orders to desegregate its schools and other facilities.

In the 1960s and 1970s, the courts had to step in when school districts across the country refused to comply with Brown v. Board of Education. And when they refused to redraw district lines to remedy intentional school segregation exacerbated by discriminatory housing patterns (often created by state and federal housing and banking policies), some courts, as a last resort, ordered busing - and considering children all over the country had been bused every day with for decades with no objections, the small percentage of busing use for desegregation should have been no big deal. Biden was on the wrong side of the issue then, aligning himself with segregationists to oppose busing. He has evolved over the years and Kamala gave him a chance to distance himself from that history, but he doubled down and made a tone-deaf "states' rights" argument. Kamala correctly pointed out that local control is well and good when they do the right thing, but when they don't it is entirely appropriate for the federal government to step in.

Biden's argument was particularly off-putting today of all days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the federal courts have no right to second-guess local governments when they egregiously gerrymander. The federal government is SUPPOSED to second guess local governments when they violate people's constitutional rights.

I'm saying she's qualified because she's been a city attorney, district attorney, attorney general, United States Senator. I don't think there's many candidates with her legal and political history. I don't much think any of those positions matter, but I do think questioning her professional qualifications is ridiculous.

You pay too much attention to the theater, but can't see the backstage. Politicians are showmen and women. They play politics - it is their business. Kamala needs a respectable outcome in SC. Joe knows that as well. They each do what they have to. End of story.

and was personally involved in some of the most sensitive issues of his day, it's easy to find controversial votes and positions to criticize after the fact. Being a Senator means working with 99 others who represent different constituencies to pass legislation. It requires a lot of compromise and casting votes for things they might not fully agree with.

That's the way our system works and Senator Harris fully understands this. She took political advantage of it, perhaps to her credit. But, let's not pretend this exchange was about shedding any light on Biden's civil rights record, it was about scoring debating points. She did that quite well.

I was her early supporter and then switched to Pete but will be watching her closely again. I’m afraid Pete’s candidacy is over due to police killing in his town and failure to record it while he was saying all around the country how great he is by implementing body cameras. I don’t think you can recover from this considering strong competition.
I’d be curious to see polling changes between biden vs. harris among AA community. I consider race issue is #1 issue before healthcare, economy, etc. maybe equal only to gun control.
