Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumI know at this time I want Biden.
I however am not ashamed to say that as time goes on I may change my mind. If the person I end up voting for the first round does not make it to the final vote I will have absolutely no problem voting for the Democrat who is the final vote. I will not stray to a third or fourth or whatever party. I would also NEVER vote for ANY republican. How many feel the same as I do?

(1,104 posts)Several years ago there was a comedy clip on one of our shows .....daily show or something..... And it pieced together a bunch of pictures and video of Biden hugging young children and making jokes that he was overly interested in young children......
Now I tried to explain to hubby that that was a skit and it was for comedy and to let me know as soon as Biden has any charges brought against him lol cuz that ain't happening....
but sometimes I think our comedians need to remember that although they are embellishing certain things for the sake of comedy that's some people still believe it.....
That or my hubby could just think outside the box for a minute LOL

(19,564 posts)I like Biden, but he doesn't hit all my bells and whistles, if I'm being honest. But, and this is a huge "but" here, my romance candidates feel much less romantic this round. I'm 100% about getting a Dem in office and looking at their actual electability on a national level. That's my litmus test this cycle.
In the end I'm supporting the big D candidate all the way.

(320 posts)I had known that Biden had considerable baggage to answer for but not how much. I suggest that you take a look at Democracy Now! from this morning, March 13. What I knew was that he threw Anita Hill under a bus, refusing to allow the testimony of people who would have validated what she said. We wouldn't be saddled with one of the worst Supreme Court justices in history. But that turns out to not be near all. Yeah, I'll vote for him if he is nominated but he should not be nominated.

(10,721 posts)Will Biden apologize or double down? Time will tell.
And, yes, he's got a lot of other baggage. He's not the slam dunk candidate some imagine him to be. On top of the baggage, he's 76.

(6,176 posts)I like Joe Biden, but I think the door has closed on him, and Bernie Sanders, as far as the presidency is concerned.
Biden would be 78 and Sanders 79 when they would be sworn in. Too old in my book to start a term as president.
Elizabeth Warren would be 71, and that is about as old as I would like a new president to be.
With all the young, dynamic Democrats out there, I would much rather see fresh young faces leading the charge in the 2020 election.
I remember Ronald Regan had serious health issues in his second term (alzheimer's) and he was younger than either Joe or Bernie would be when he was elected.
The job of president is very challenging...and I don't mean the back 9 at Mar-a-Lago.
It takes a lot out of a person to do that job. Unless, of course, you aren't doing much more than eating, golfing, and tweeting.
In any event, I will support whoever the party picks.
For the record, I'm going to be 73 this year, and I know how much age takes away from your ability to work hard as the years pile up.

(7,627 posts)Trump is old as well and in far worse health than any of our candidates. If Biden is the nominee for example, he can just choose a younger vp like Harris and trump wont be able to use age as an attack line anyway.

(2,412 posts)Respectfully, please remember that Joe Biden supported the War on Iraq. This was hugely unpopular. We need a candidate who will funnel the money we waste on wars to a better use to help our own people. 9/11 was the end of The Peace Dividend!!!!! We need to wrest those trillions from the Military Industrial Complex to benefit your average person. We need the same benefits as people in Western Europe get!!!! A million Iraqis died in the war and we have massive refugee movement to Europe. I would find it very difficult to vote for a war advocate since my brother in law died in Vietnam for a lie!

(9,865 posts)...pundits talking this morning about Biden. They said his past is a problem and will come back to haunt. For instance:
>His opposition to busing in the days when school segregation was still how it was done. He teamed up with Strom Thurmond ( a notorious segregationist) of all people---to oppose busing.
>His treatment of Anita Hill, especially as it appears today with Me Too awareness. Can you imagine the TV clips they'll show about this? He was really awful to her.
>Stuff he did to help Banksters get away with millions and no jail time after the financial collapse of 2008. But I was only half listening and didn't get the details.
Of course I'll vote for any Democrat over all Repugs but I do think this guy's time is past. I think the party has moved on and has had to move on because the Republican party is now so extreme, non-tradional and dangerous. The old ways of oppposing aren't strong enough.

(14,573 posts)Some of the comments were quite good. One person said, essentially, that was then and this is now. Another suggested Biden may have 'evolved' past some of the things and would be different now. Another still pointed out how Warren at one time was a Republican.
If Biden goes deep in the primaries, I'm going to be among those pressuring him and his campaign, rightly, to work to reverse the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005. Joe Biden was one of the first Democratic supporters of the bill and voted for it four times until it finally passed in March 2005. He voted against amendments to the bill that would have helped people forced into bankruptcy by big medical bills, and that would have forced credit card companies to give people more warning about the financial consequences of only paying the minimum.
So, as they say in football, if he goes deep in the primaries, he'd better bloody well do a U-Turn on that stink-bomb of a law. I won't withhold my vote - I have never, and would never do that - but until he makes that commitment, he doesn't have my full support.
I can see him evolving on sexism like he did on gay marriage - that's ok. But the BAPCPA? That requires action toward repeal.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
zentrum
(9,865 posts)...on that information about the BAPCPA.
I think that's huge and you can't just do a u-turn, since the damage done to people then changed their lives forever and is still having an effect on them, even if they are doing better now than in '05 or '08. If you lost a house or your kid's college education or couldn't pay a medical bill---you don't forgive.
If a politician "evolves" on too many issues that were really big---he/she come off just looking like someone who will say anything and has no deep guiding rudder. That worries me, especially when we're facing what we face now. We need a candidate people can feel real trust in.
Joe's a nice working class guy who rode the train to work--but the record is problematic, to me.

(26,291 posts)so honestly I do not care who we run.
What we need to really focus on is avoiding a repeat of being butt hurt if whatever candidate we might personally support does not win the nomination and instead we support whoever is the final choice.

(14,573 posts)I feel the same way. Most candidates, but for two, being treated with respect. I'm for Warren at this point. I was for Bernie, strongly, in 2016. I've seen a lot of people here very negative for him, and for Tulsi Gabbard.
But, we'll see how everything shakes out.

(8,652 posts)In today's day and age, the age of an individual is different than it was 30 or 40 years ago.
I'm 66 years old and still do my job in an effective way. Even though I'm a union appointee, I am still an employee at will.
Yesterday, I was on a negotiating team with a 28 year old agent. We brought home one of the best contracts for the workers that has ever been approved. I like to think (and my partner agreed) that my experience brought value to the negotiation.
Biden will have a Vice-President. He can choose someone who brings other attributes to the ticket and the administration. They will work well together. I refuse to criticize any Democrat running for the nomination, because one of them will be nominated and that person must defeat Trump.
Excuse me if I'm offended by anyone who says that an individual should not be considered just because of his or her age.

(4,889 posts)I'm 63 godammit and I know I'm not as good at anything I once was. No one is. Raygun fell into dementia, Trump is falling into dementia, and by 2024 Vice President Biden will be 10 years older than Trump is now. It's simple practicality. It's why people retire. Besides that I've seen no real progress in this country since 1980, except for technology & civil rights. In fact, I consider 1969, the year of the moon landing, the peak of American culture and it has been down hill ever since. Now had Robert Kennedy not been murdered & the criminal party not retaken the Whitehouse things might have been different. But things didn't happen that way did they.

(8,652 posts)...then go on to explain why you are biased against age.
I am not what I once was, either. I'm better. My experience brings a dimension to my work that is valuable in what I do.
But, please, don't say you are not biased against age. Just substitute the word minority or woman into your statement, and hear how that sounds.

(12,165 posts)Most are for Biden, too. The Gen Z, VERY politically active daughter of one of my friends is pro-Biden. She has met him and heard him speak in person. She evangelizes for him at college.
A lot of people, including me, are longing for a return to the normalcy of the Obama administration. Biden was part of that wonderful period in our history. It is clear to me why people like him; he has the advantage of the halo effect.
I would be enthusiastically on-board with Biden should he win the nom.
