(9,656 posts)Biden has suffered an across the board decline in his support since June. He lost ground with white Democrats (from 32% to 18%) and voters of color (from 33% to 19%), among voters without a college degree (from 35% to 18%) and college graduates (from 28% to 20%), with both men (from 38% to 24%) and women (from 29% to 16%), and among voters under 50 years old (from 21% to 6%) as well as voters aged 50 and over (from 42% to 33%). Most of Bidens lost support in these groups shifted almost equally toward Sanders and Warren.

(7,432 posts)He had a great run in 2016. He opened the door to a lot of talented candidates and politicians. He promotes good policy that presumably focuses on the welfare of the middle and working classes. All of that is good.
But in the 2016 campaign, Bernie only had one competitor: HRC. He could distinguish himself as the left-leaning "Democrat" and get a lot of attention for it. But in 2019, Bernie has a lot of competition from a deep field of political talent. Compared to Buttigieg, Harris, Booker, Warren, and others, Bernie looks far less talented and less persuasive. IMO, he's at the top of the list because of name recognition, and certainly not from his repetitive right-hand and finger-stabbing into the air when he's always emphasizing a point.
It's time for Bernie and all Dem candidates to start laying into Trumpy's vacuousness, dishonesty, ignorance, vanity, criminality, and utter stupidity on a daily basis. Trumpy must be laid to waste, and the Dem leaders are the ones charged with that responsibility. Bernie, since 2016 does not display a forceful frontal attack on Trumpy's major weaknesses. He's had YEARS of openings to do just that, and he's fallen flat. Buttigieg, Booker, Warren, and Harris can do it with aplomb. Bernie doesn't seem to have the fire in his belly to verbally decimate Trumpy. And he MUST be decimated.

(5,106 posts)I voted for Bernie in the primary last time, but later worked locally for Hillary. I think Bernie's time has passed, and he has started to wear me out with his "hectoring," so I'm no longer a supporter. Warren has just surpassed Biden in my book, at the present time.
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
He's, at best, tied for first with two other people.
That does not make him "the frontrunner."
Furthermore, this is a 298 person sample size with an almost 6% MOE.
slow your roll a bit there, this is but one somewhat flawed data point...could be true, could not be, could be partially true...but it by no means makes Sanders (or Warren or Biden for that matter) "the front-runner."

(4,341 posts)I don't know that is a valid point, the fact that Warren is younger, I think Bernie will not only hold his own against the creature, I think Bernie will ridicule the creature with his knowledge, directness and wit (unintended wit), he is sharp, just like he left Tim Ryan with his mouth open when he tried to challenge him during the debate.
Sanders/Warren may be a good ticket. But I am still undecided.

So, Biden's loss of support, -13%, was OVER TWICE the Margin of error of the A+ rated LIVE Monmouth University poll, which as an accuracy of 80% according to 538. That's one of the best rated polls that 538 keeps tabs on.

(3,256 posts)Statistical power of that sample is <70% -- thus totally unreliable
The MOE stated in the poll is derived magically and I prefer the formula below. The MOE for that sample will range from 6.8% to 9.1%
This is not a place to write a statistical treatise so I shall refrain.
However, the formula is
z*SQR((beta*(1-beta))/n)
People can assign any beta to change the MOE unless taken from a standard z score distribution. Many outfits have "magical" beta numbers for their samples that don't hold up.

As to your claim, it is factually false. I never wrote what you claim, as the quote you used show. Perhaps you don't understand the phrase "can be less reliable"? Or you were just trying to take a shot. Either way you are wrong.
Too large a sample size can skewer results, as anyone who understands statistics knows. You obviously don't know what you are talking about.

When you break it down further, you see that Monmouth did not poll at a vastly later date than others or among a different set of voters. Monmouth conducted its poll on August 16-20 among voters who say they are Democrats and independents who say they lean toward the Democratic Party.
Interestingly enough, CNN did its own poll of the race August 15-18 among this same defined group. Unlike Monmouth, CNN put Biden up with 29% to Sanders' 15% and Warren's 14%.
The CNN poll looks a lot more like other polls of the race taken this month when it comes to Biden. Fox News was in the field from August 11-13 (within a week of the Monmouth and CNN polls) and showed Biden at 31%, Warren 20% and Sanders 10%. Unlike CNN and Monmouth, Fox didn't preassign voters to the Democratic primary based on party identification. Instead, they asked all voters which primary they'd vote in.
You'll note that in all of these other polls, Biden's doing at least 10 points better than he was doing in the Monmouth poll. It seems unlikely to me that Biden lost so much ground within the two-day period of CNN ending its own poll.
