NPR/PBS poll: Warren is the most liked candidate among Democrats

Elizabeth Warren is on the rise among Democratic voters, but she and other Democrats are less popular with the overall electorate, raising concerns about a bruising primary that could go on for the better part of the next year, a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll finds.

...Warren finds herself in a strong position with Democratic voters ahead of Thursday's Democratic presidential debate.

Seventy-five percent of Democratic voters now say they have a favorable impression of Warren — that's up from 53% in January, the last time the poll asked the favorability of candidates or potential candidates. That's a whopping 22-point jump.

What's more, those saying they have a negative impression has gone down from 17% to 11%.

"Elizabeth Warren seems to be on the verge of starting to make significant and serious inroads into this contest," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, which conducts the poll. He added, "Heading into the debate, she's very well positioned."

Former Vice President Joe Biden, who leads in most national polls of the Democratic contest, is also well liked, but he's seen a decline since January — 71% of Democrats say they have a positive impression of Biden, a 5-point drop, and 22% don't, an 11-point increase in his negative rating. "One of the initial senses of what Joe Biden presented was that he seemed to be less of a risk," Miringoff said, "but his performance so far has not been gaffe-proof, and, as a result, people are not as comfortable, and that opened up the door for others, and particularly Warren."

That’s a cheap shot at Biden, beneath your dignity. Though hilarious, I’ll give you that.

And I’m speaking as a 2016 Sanders-then-rabid-Clinton supporter who is leaning Warren in 2020 among a field of at least five people who would be a better president than Orange Youtan, our current Primate-in-Chief.

Warren is the real deal, unlike any of the other candidates. She’s was a professional educator, not a lawyer. Like Obama, she’s forgotten more about the Constitution and law than any Republican currently knows.

Perhaps you haven't lived in Texas - I have - but there is a history of a higher percentage of women being leaders, such as mayors, than in other states, because the women there realize that they have to be in charge in order to make change. Granted, they are usually of two types: the former cheerleader and beauty queen (Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson) or the post menopausal grandma who you just don't mess with (Governor Ann Richards). Ever heard of Barbara Jordan? Google her.

From a 1988 article in the NYT:

And women have more visibility in Texas today than they have had in 50 years - since the days when Gov. James E. (Pa) Ferguson was impeached and saw to it that his wife, Miriam (Ma) Ferguson, was elected to fill his term. She was the only woman in Texas history to hold statewide office until Ann Richards was elected state treasurer in 1982. Now there is talk that the next governor might be a woman.

It would be simplistic to say that the oil boom, and then the bust, were responsible for the increasing prominence of women in politics here, for it is a national trend. According to the Women's Campaign Fund, women held 4 percent of elected mayoral offices in the nation in 1975 and 14.6 percent in 1985.

https://www.nytimes.com/1988/03/20/magazine/lace-over-steel-the-women-mayors-of-texas.html

https://www.wideopencountry.com/11-texas-women-who-influenced-history/

Ann Richards explained about women in Texas taking charge, when she talked about visiting her mother in the retirement community where she lived, and found her mother up on the roof fixing a shingle. When Ann called up, "Mama, they have people here to do that!" her mother replied, "Well, they're not here yet, and I know if I do it, it'll be done right."

I hope that addresses your 'concerns' about the chances of a female candidate being considered worthy in Texas.

Now, what I do know they will balk at is someone calling themselves a "socialist."

of winning in Texas. Period. Paragraph. This is my opinion, based on observation, after living here in Texas since 1997. This does not mean that there were and are exceptions on positions lower than president and in blue areas. It has nothing to do with the worthiness of any of our female candidates - they certainly are.

Patronizing comments, like "Ever heard of Barbara Jordan? Google her." and "I hope that addresses your 'concerns' about the chances of a female candidate being considered worthy in Texas" are uncalled for. If you respond to my posts, I would appreciate more respect.

After all, women of a particular age are supposed to be very aware and responsive about how "nice" they are. Knitting, making cookies, being supportive. But not being in charge of men.

Believing one is more competent than any man to lead the most powerful nation in the world might give people the impression that a lady isn't terribly worried about the personal approval of men, young white men in particular, who are very accustomed to having their opinions counting more than anyone else's.

If Biden is elected, it will be infinitely better than trump.

A pile of **** would be an infinitely better pres than trump.

But it'll be 4 years (or 8) of giving in to republicans at every turn. He's not a fighter. Maybe he'd make a better than average president. This isn't the time for a better than average president.

We need Warren. She's a fighter. She's extremely intelligent. She will do what's right. And I don't ever see her capitulating to republicans. At the same time, I believe she would deal with them if they came to the table honestly. And I trust her to know when that happens.

Not so with Biden, I feel like he'd give away the farm to look like a good guy because he just isn't a fighter.

can a woman handle the pressure of being a president??? OK OK OK... before you burn up your keyboard writing what a moran I am just hear me out. What is the number 1 thing we HAVE to do in 2020? Right, vote Gump out of office and hopefully remove the shit stains from the oval office. Every Democrat running is miles better than what is currently infecting our lives every day. What concerns me is there are STILL people who are undecided that think a woman does not have what it takes to be a president. As wrong as that is and I am sure I will hear about it, it does not take away the fact that people think that way. So it all boils down to the number 1 thing we must do in 2020. Do we toss those voters away like we don't need those troglodytes or do we curry favor with them? This all just makes me think of 2016 and we all just knew we were going to have our first female president.

I really hope I am wrong and America has progressed past this sort of thinking but lets face it, with what currently is squatting at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue it makes one pause and wonder just how stupid are some people?

I believe that Barack Obama was the subject of such "concern" that a black man might not be able to 'handle the pressure" of all the racism.

I think that we need to trust the women who are running to make that call. FYI - the last Democratic woman to run for POTUS got more votes than any other candidate not named Obama.

Do we toss those voters away like we don't need those troglodytes or do we curry favor with them?

As a public figure since the early 90's, Clinton's favorability numbers were already "baked" into the equation. Biden's appeal is almost entirely on the fact that he is already a known quantity.

Comparatively, people who are not political junkies were just getting to know Warren since she launched her campaign this year. And the consensus is clear - they like her. They may be afraid what their neighbors think, but personally they like her.

Many were expecting a scolding, snooty Ivy League professor, but have been pleasantly surprised by her ability to be powerfully intelligent but still manage to be personable and relatable.

And it is hard not to be impressed by the remarkable discipline of her campaign. She recovered impressively from an early stumble that would have torpedoed many a lesser candidate. As more and more Dems feel confident about her, the GOP is growing more and more anxious.
