Bernie Sanders Says His Complaints About Media Coverage Are Different Than Trump's

Trump has been accusing the media of being corrupt and, in particular, has targeted the Washington Post, which is owned by Jeff Bozos and has pushed conspiracy theories that tech giants are biased against conservatives. Indeed, perhaps due to such complaints, self-identified Republicans were overwhelmingly likely, 83 percent to 17 percent, to see tech companies as being biased against conservatives.

When asked about the his complaints about the media, Bernie Sanders explained the differences:

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Bernie Sanders acknowledged his recent complaints about media coverage may bear some resemblance to President Trump’s attacks -- but said that his message is different. Asked about comparisons between his comments and Mr. Trump's language, Mr. Sanders responded that "maybe" there were similarities in phrasing. But he said a big difference is that the president calls the media the enemy of the people. Mr. Sanders said Mr. Trump "says that the media produces fake news; I don’t believe that for a second. It’s disgusting, it undermines American democracy.”

Mr. Sanders made his new comments in an interview with The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. Mr. Sanders said his problem with media coverage was that a small number of corporations owned the major news outlets, and that resulted in reporters missing stories he believes should be covered.

“One would be very naive not to believe that the owners of the media have an agenda as well,” he said. “It’s not just their attacks on me, that’s not what I’m talking about. It’s the issues that they allow for serious discussion.”

Earlier in the week, Mr. Sanders alleged that the Washington Post covered him negatively because of his criticism of Amazon.com’s business practices. The Washington Post is owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Marty Baron, the executive editor of the Washington Post, responded by calling Mr. Sanders’s comments “a conspiracy theory” and said the newsroom operates independently.

Sanders clarified his position on Bezos' role after suggesting twice on Monday that his public objections to Amazon's business practices had influenced the Post's reporting."

a political operative who ran Fox News as a constant political campaign to get Republicans elected and move the party to the right, it was ideological. The conservative media world has set itself up as "'You can only come to us, don't believe anybody else, everybody else is against you, we're the only people who will tell you anything you need to know, you should not read the paper or trust any other sources of news.'" But the people running MSNBC are just running a TV network.

Bernie thinks that both sides are the same and everybody's corrupt. Some people are just running a TV network or a newspaper or own one. People working there are individuals, not zombies taking orders from a shadowy Establishment.

People in media know there are two worlds. There are the corporate weasels we work for, and there are colleagues who are free-thinkers. Sometimes too free, but that’s the atmosphere.

Trump’s view of the media is from his experience feeding them phony info as John Barron, working with the National Enquirer, and as a washed-up reality-TV host.

Media professionals have seen Trump’s kind come and go over their careers, and smell the desperation of superficial actors losing their narcissisticly-enhanced looks—they take it out on the crew.

That isn’t what Bernie is doing.

Bernie seems to be the Democratic nominee preferred by the GOP, so it's not surprising that they would promote him in the way he wants to be promoted.

Yes, Sanders often does demonize the legitimate free press when they do anything but simply promote him, and praises partisan sources who do.

But Sanders’s remedy for what ails the media — uncritical, stenographic coverage of his agenda — betrays a misunderstanding of the role of a free press. And his dismissal of legitimate journalism not to his liking as “political gossip” bears a troubling resemblance to what another politician refers to as “fake news.”

check him.

He also takes the similar step of demonizing those sources to his supporters, and endorsing up partisan sources who praise him and write hit pieces on his opponents.

15. Sanders and Trump vie for many of the same populist types,
Fri Oct 4, 2019, 01:42 PM
Oct 2019

and many of the same messages work well for both. Profound distrust of media coverage is as critical to populist and extremist movements as truth in media is to mainstream Democrats.

What would happen, for instance, if Sanders' populist faction (and his radical leaning faction also for that matter) just stopped believing he'd lost because of election tampering by dozens of state Democratic parties and lethal interference by the DNC, if they stopped being sure that lack of reporting meant the the media were hiding these Democratic Party crimes?

Now as in 2016, Sanders benefits from the massively funded Trump/Republican mobilization of populist angers that encourages distrust of everything but their own leader.

"And his dismissal of legitimate journalism not to his liking as 'political gossip' bears a troubling resemblance to what another politician refers to as 'fake news.'"
