Sanders urges impeachment trial 'quickly' in the Senate

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) urged the Senate to "quickly" pursue a trial over the articles of impeachment unveiled by the House on Tuesday, adding that the House should pass the articles as soon as possible.

In a pair of tweets, Sanders said that he would do his constitutional duty and attend the impeachment trial in the Senate even as he campaigns as a candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination.

"Donald Trump is the most corrupt president in history, and he must be held accountable. I strongly believe the announcement of articles of impeachment are appropriate and necessary, and I call on the full House to pass them," Sanders tweeted.

"Once the House proceeds to impeachment, Leader McConnell must quickly schedule a full trial in the Senate, where I will uphold my constitutional responsibility as a juror," he added.

Personally I believe McConnell will stonewall it for as long as he can.

Other candidate responses are on the link as well

1. Or the Senate could just dismiss it

I read today that Republican Senate leaders aren’t very enthusiastic about a full trial. They may just fast track it to a vote to get rid of it.

If they go the full trial route they will do it right at the start of the primaries to cause maximum disruption. That would benefit Mayor Pete the most since he could keep campaigning full time. The Biden family may be called as witnesses and Warren and Sanders would have to be at the trial as jurors.

John Dean has the right strategy.

Hold it in the House as long as possible, gathering more evidence all the time that will continue to move public opinion.

They have sold this to the public as an urgent process that requires expediency. They can’t suddenly sit on it for months and say we are waiting for more, that sends a message that what they currently have isn’t enough.

6. Hearing Sanders give the same stump speech as he has for the past four years...

...and hearing him propose things that have zero chance of ever passing is FAR LESS important than impeaching a corrupt criminal that is literally pushing our democracy to its breaking point.

While Bernie is known for his legendary consistency and laser like focus on the issues, he has also evolved, including his stump speeches apparent to anyone following them closely.

Giving the public something to be for in addition to just a thing opposed gives citizens two hands to fight with and the success of the endeavor determined by the American People.

Nothing will save democracy more than democracy in saving itself.

It's insulting to even throw that weak campaign slogan back at people, especially to someone that just said there is nothing more important than saving our democracy -- last I checked, saving our democracy is "something to be for."

PS - Biden is probably my second choice and I could easily see myself voting for him in the end -- you should be careful who you call out. Rude supporters are probably one of the biggest reasons I went from voting for Sanders in the 2016 primary to doing everything in my power to make sure he does not become the nominee this time around.

14. Bernie is somehow expecting McConnell to do what's best for the country?

What is he thinking? Surely he's been paying attention.

I expect McConnell will wait to start anything until the primaries start - pulling the senators off the campaign trail.

I wonder if anyone on the GOP side has picked out a 'pied piper' candidate.
