in Los Angeles, California at the Grand Park downtown, across from City Hall. The park can hold very large crowds of 25,000 to 50,000 people, depending on the setup.

Supporters gathered in the grassy Grand Park outside of City Hall, watching opening acts of folk rock and hip-hop performers. Many said they were Sanders backers since 2016 — or even earlier.

Just tempering the deification to realistic levels. He is just another candidate and all the gowing, floral and ebullient posts will be vetted and put in perspective.

That crowd was somewhat big but not very significant by Los Angeles standards. To compare, Barack Obama's rally in 2008 in Los Angeles had 12,000 people.

Referring to its population alone in this context is deceiving ...

Do you see Alameda County there? Oakland is just Northwest of where the 'A' in 'Alameda is ..

And counting the Delta inlets in Solano County, there's 6 Bridges crossing the SF Bay ... Benicia, Vallejo, San Rafael, SF/Oakland, San Mateo, and Dunbarton.

Sun Mar 24, 2019, 02:21 PM
Mar 2019

If you made me bet, I'd guess an event in Downtown LA would have about 1.4-1.6X more people living within a 60 mile radius (relatively easy travel distance) vs an event in Oakland. No way it's > 2X ... or rather, I'd be blown away if it were. It's for SURE ... nowhere near 8X

In Oakland's favor, however, is what we call Bay Area Rapid Transit, aka BART, which is a massive 'subway' type system, wherein the City of Oakland sits smack in the middle of the whole thing.

Put it this way, you get on ANY BART train? Sit on it long enough ... you're GOING to Oakland. Period. You may have to wait at the end of the line til the train changes direction, but ... yeah. Sit on BART long enough, and you're going to Oakland.

primary today, I would vote for:

And one should also take into account, when comparing attendance, that Oakland sits smack in the middle of a sprawling, almost 50 year old, heavily used subway system, and that traffic in general is not as bad in the Bay Area (though it's bad, it's not LA-bad).

I'd say it's reasonable to expect around 2X the turnout in Downtown LA over Downtown Oakland ... to be roughly equivalent.

That's all I'm saying

Thanks for the insightful helpful input. It kind of smells like "I know you are but what am I" childishness though.

If the OP was a celebration of ALL of our candidates getting a lot of support your post would fit in well. I'd say the same thing if a Sanders supporter waded into a Harris OP and thread on the subject of her getting a huge crowd somewhere, only to announce how some Sanders rally did better than her. Why not just celebrate it or at least not try and downplay it?

And when someone posted the Fire department estimate @ 12000, your response was "Bazinga!"? Was that a cheer for a fellow Democratic party candidate getting out that many, or some kind of "nah nah, my candidate did better!" putdown? My guess is the latter.

The Republicans could never accomplish such a feat on their own and the inherent conflict of interest between corporate media "news" /editorial bottom line considerations and what social polices are best for the American Nation is the elephant in the room with them.

The older generations received their information predominately from T.V. a one way form of communication, T.V. is literally a hypnotizing force.

The Internet; which the younger generations grew up with, changed the rules of the game, The Information Superhighway; by nature increases literacy to a greater or lesser extent, while democratizing information among the people.
