Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWhy Biden Is Leading
By Robert KuttnerThere is one key reason why Joe Biden is ahead in the national polls despite his lapses on the campaign trail, his loss of focus in debates, and the sense that he is an old man from another era. He has made his campaign about one thinggetting Donald Trump out of office.
And thats the one thing that unites Democrats of the center and the left. Consider this TV spot, drawn from speeches in which Biden effectively makes the case that his campaign has one paramount goalousting Trump.
Now this doesnt mean Biden would make the most effective Democratic candidate against Trump. I happen to think that Bidens serial weaknesses as a campaigner would enable Trump to eat him alive, not to mention the embarrassment and distraction of Hunter Biden. The former vice presidents son is both a lightning rod and a trigger for Bidens temper, as well as an unsavory reminder of similarities with Trumps family.
The puzzle is not why Biden is making the defeat of Trump the centerpiece of his campaign for the nomination. The puzzle is why other candidates are whacking away at each other rather than going after Trump.

(47,625 posts)That is the part that stood out to me as well. I generally don't agree with a lot of what he said otherwise. I wish the other candidates would realize that Democratic voters are really turned off by the attacks on fellow Democrats. It is one of the things we can't stand about Trump and don't appreciate it from candidates of our own party.

(1,812 posts)is due to the fact that he has around 60% support amongst African-Americans over the age of 45 ...These voters don't seem to care about his gaffes and debate performances .. They seem focused on his role as loyal Vice -President to Barack Obama ...

I'm sure there are many reasons why they are supporting Biden. He has been far more than a loyal vice president to Barack Obama.

(1,701 posts)and know he embodies the best liberal values of the Democratic Party.
And that he is wise, rational, and exhibits great judgement.
His presidency will restore America after an aberrant four years.
Biden will deliver real progress once elected. And that's how one should measure what it means to be a "progressive."

I like the fact that Biden has common sense and knows how to avoid these types of embarrassing errors.

(6,283 posts).... Is why Joe Biden is leading, simple logic dictates that is what is most important to voters, hence his lead.
"I happen to think that Bidens serial weaknesses as a campaigner would enable Trump to eat him alive"
The only way Trump "eats" any of the candidates alive is if he brings a fork and a knife to the debates. I would be embarrassed to be the author of the above quote.
The fact of the matter is the other candidates are going after Trump. The difference is, Joe Biden's message is resonating more with voters.
Bottom line? If I had written this editorial, I would have slept on it before publishing, and saved myself from humiliating embarrassment.

(8,144 posts)hearts when he speaks, out of the gate had the most resonant message, and reminds us of who we are. Hes leading because he has proven leadership ability. Hes leading because he is one of
Americas most respected and loved politicians.
Hes leading because unlike any other candidate, he has stature on the world stage. He is leading with the most important Dem constituency, AA voters because he has been cultivating relationships with AA leaders and communities for decades, unlike some of his rivals who seem to have only recently discovered them. Detractors are surprised about his lead because they underestimate Joe Biden.
Many of us supporters are not surprised and know that there are many factors involved in Bidens success thus far in this campaign as Biden has multiple strengths. And ironically, though he may get tongue tied on occasion in debate, hes leading because so often it is Joe Biden who has the best words.

Joe Biden reminded all of us of what a presidential president would sound like
August 7, 2019 at 2:52 p.m. PDT
In a fiery and blunt speech slamming the tenor, tone and words of President Trump as the nation reels from white nationalist domestic terrorism, former vice president Joe Biden reminded all of us of what a presidential president sounds like. His words were stirring. His delivery was passionate. And they were befitting a man who kicked off his campaign with a video decrying Trumps shameful response to Charlottesville.
This is no knock on the other Democratic presidential candidates, particularly Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), who gave his own speech on Wednesday at the historic Mother Emanuel church in Charleston, S.C., where a white supremacist murdered nine African American parishoners in 2015. All of the candidates have a moral core and fundamental senses of decency and empathy that Trump never possessed. Yet, unlike teleprompter Trumps hollow remarks about the carnage in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, Biden came at his speech in Iowa with an authority that is hard to match.
