A lot of people think that automation like this won't start affecting the labor market for many years. They are mistaken.
Right now only Yang is addressing an issue that is going to hit us sooner than most expect - and that is a problem.

(146,308 posts)It's the only place I know where aggressive driving is absolutely necessary if you want to get anywhere at all. That's especially true on the Strip. I don't give self-driving vehicles any chance of success in that city.

(13,180 posts)And, as I have mentioned before, general purpose automated, autonomous driving is technically impossible prior to the existence of strong AI (at which point no one has jobs and we are competing with dogs and cats for status as preferred pet).

(13,180 posts)Biden's take on it is interesting in that he points out that people such as truck drivers are listening and believe this to be true whether or not it actually is.
I like that take on it much, much better than Yang's. Yang appears to believe that automated truck driving is on its way soon. He says so here: https://www.facebook.com/andrewyang2020/videos/automated-truck-driving/638364076584385/. The trouble with that is that it ain't gonna happen. Automation is going to affect a whole lot of jobs, but not truck driving. (At least not the actual driving part.)
On edit: Here's one with Buttigieg talking about automation too. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/paloma/the-technology-202/2019/01/25/the-technology-202-here-s-how-2020-hopeful-pete-buttigieg-wants-to-help-workers-who-could-lose-jobs-to-ai/5c4a04b21b326b29c3778cb8/
And I'm not against UBI, BTW. I'd like to see how it would work though.

(38,958 posts)and noise is less of an issue, but I firmly believe that Yang is correct. There have already been automated trucks going from California to the Eastern states in test runs.
I worked 46 years in the Retail Sector and saw many good paying jobs automated away. I have no expectation that anything other than increased automation will be coming.
