For one, the assertion that Sanders is a unity candidate is faulty. Sanders and his strategy are polarizing by design.

“It is my very strong belief that the United States must reject the path of hatred and divisiveness — and instead find the moral conviction to choose a different path, a higher path. A path of compassion, justice and love,” the 2020 Democratic presidential hopeful said at George Washington University."

"The divide over Sanders reflects a dilemma at the heart of the Democratic primary: Should the party nominate a Democratic version of Trump who can match his combativeness, energizing liberals and taking the fight to the president? Or should it embrace a consensus builder, one who can rise above the country’s partisan anger and bring people together?"

elect a right wing nut named Ronald Reagan … In 2016 , no one believed Donald Trump would capture the White House … In 1992 , we heard that a draft-dodging libertine like Bill Clinton was a goner … In 2008 , these wizards opined that America was not ready for a black President, with a Muslim name no less …...What do all these candidates have in common ?... They generated grassroots enthusiasm , big crowds , and promised fundamental change …. If Joe Biden is nominated , he needs to promise fundamental change , with concrete proposals delivered with passion .. .Incrementalism is a market tested loser …. Ask Dukakis , Gore , Kerry and Hillary …...They played it safe - and lost …..

Voters are fairly clear about what they would like from a Democrat. They prefer, by 82% to 11%, one who promises to find common ground over one who promises to fight for a progressive agenda; and they prefer a moderate over a liberal, 75% to 19%.

They support Biden over the president, 38% to 27%, but prefer the president to Warren, 37% to 20%. This group voted for Trump by a smaller margin in 2016, 37% to 30%, with the rest casting ballots for minor candidates.

I do have the same concerns with Bernie that I have with Biden.....age. Electing a 78 year old man is a risk, no guarantee they will retain mentally sharp for 4-8 years. Warren would be, at the end of two terms about the age Joe and Bernie are now.

Do think millennials are key too winning and the skew more progressive than any age group....so maybe we should nominate someone....progressive.

If you look at the moderates and progressives as blocs, they’re within a few points of each other straight down the line, with each side trading leads nationally, in the early states and in the massive group of states that votes on March 3rd, aka Super Tuesday. It’s easy to see how these blocs will polarize, but polarization is not inevitable. To the contrary, a range of reliable data suggests that polarization is likely only if a moderate wins early states—and that by contrast, Democratic voters will quickly rally behind a progressive.

Second-choice support gives us an idea of where voters will flow as the field winnows, and it shows that all roads lead to the progressives. According to the measures of second-choice support tracked by the Economist and Morning Consult, Warren and Bernie are the second choice of each other’s supporters—predictably. But they’re also the second choice of Biden and Buttigieg’s supporters. So if Warren or Sanders win in early states, they’re poised to easily attract the supporters of the moderates, quickly unifying the party. But if a moderate wins early primaries and one of the progressives fades, most of the losing progressive’s supporters are likely to go to the other progressive, not the moderate—leading to a polarized and potentially very long primary.
