VERMONT: Early voting period opens ahead of 2020 presidential primary
MONTPELIER, Vt. Secretary of State Jim Condos has announced the early voting period for the 2020 presidential primary election has begun in Vermont.
To participate in early voting, voters have to request a ballot from their town or city clerk. All ballots must be returned by primary election day, which is Tuesday, March 3, to be counted. The secretary of states Elections Division suggests placing a ballot in the mail a week prior to election day to ensure your ballot will be received in time.
Vermont law allows for 17-year-olds to register and vote in primary elections, including the presidential primaries, if they will turn 18 on or before the November 3 general election. For the presidential primary only, the state law requires voters to request either the Democratic or Republican party ballot. The request forms will have a place for you to indicate your choice.
In a statement, Condos said: Voting early is a great way to participate in our democratic process and to ensure that you have cast your ballot before Primary Day. Ensuring access to the ballot box for homebound voters with disabilities, military, and overseas voters, and Vermonters who may have challenges getting to the polls on Election Day isnt just important, its fundamental to our democratic values.
