Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumNot a fan of Joe Rogan but what I find interesting is that Sanders who is so far left
can appeal to someone who previously voted for Johnson. I was skeptical he and Warren could get people in the middle. I thought they would bring out the base and people who didn't used to vote but want their student debt gone or universal HC and distrusted both parties. What seems to have won Rogan over is that Sanders has been consistent his entire career and he seems to trust he will look out for regular folks. I don't think Rogan likes Trump.
Yes Rogan has had major issues and it is good to point those out. However, I have seen him say some very good stuff by ripping Candice Owen to shreds on global warming and Ben Shapiro on his stance on gay marriage etc. I personally have watched a few of his videos over the years and for the most part thought he was somewhat reasonable but with a tendency to allow BS to be taken at face value without doing his homework and questioning some clear BS. I do remember a few videos that had me face palming for sure. However, I wasn't aware of all the controversies that have suddenly shown up here the past couple of days. It's evidently not the kind of endorsement someone should be proud of BUT whether we like it or not we are going to need some of these folks who we don't always see eye to eye with and if for some strange reason they like Sanders because they think he might work for them then that is a good thing, not a bad thing. It doesn't mean changing our values but reaching out to them on the things we do agree on and I think that is what Sanders has done here.
With 7 million followers Rogan is a force with a lot of people who probably don't normally vote for Democrats. His video with Sanders has over 11 million views, 379K likes and only 43K dislikes. I would bet at least a million or two may be considering Sanders over Trump now and that would be a very good thing in the general election period as long as Sanders stays true on the issues that are of concern here with Rogan.
In conclusion, my main take away from all of this is that I was surprised Sanders appeal could be so wide? It makes me more confident he could beat Trump than before. I voted for Hillary a month early last round and will vote a month early for whomever the Democratic nominee is. I will also do my best to bring as many friends as possible out to the polls no matter who gets the nom!

(25,472 posts)Particularly someone who makes a living off of attracting attention to himself. Rogan's endorsement has more to do with Rogan than it does with Sanders. Rogan's endorsement of Sanders is representative of nothing other than Rogan.
"I would bet at least a million or two may be considering Sanders over Trump now"
There is zero evidence for that statement. As with most of the assertions about Rogan's endorsement, it's all just wishful thinking.
I'm kind of amazed how many people seem to believe that this is some kind of epiphany and representative of some seismic shift. It's representative of nothing other than a media personality making an endorsement, followed by the weirdest set of justifications for his prior abhorrent behavior that I can recall.

Last I checked, Ron Paul is the exact opposite of progressive. He's one of the most conservative members of Congress in history.

And ironically, he stopped smoking weed.

(25,472 posts)One of the Paulites became a prepper and moved to Mexico to go "off grid", though it didn't last very long. He discovered that he liked civilization a little more than he thought. I don't have much contact with him anymore, so I don't know if the other Paul-related stuff had any lasting impact.

(25,472 posts)Based on his history, I would say there's very little evidence that he is being sincere. Or, to be more accurate, we have no clue whether or not he's sincere. As I've noted elsewhere, I think he did it for attention and it has more to do with Rogan than it does with Sanders.
There's also no guarantee that he votes for the Democratic nominee if it's not Sanders - or even Sanders, for that matter.

(25,560 posts)That makes the whole thing stranger. Bernie's staff was familiar with him, they should know what he's like. The more I find out the more unlikely it seems that Rogan will support the Democratic nominee. Too bad.

(1,701 posts)Sanders has a long history of being regressive on guns, protectionist when it comes to trade, skeptical of immigration, an isolationist in foreign policy, and an economic-nationalist. Not to mention being critical of "identity politics."
That he appeals to populists is completely normal.
What's a bigger mystery is why some liberal Democrats are in Sander's camp when he's said dozens of times that he "is not, and has never, been a liberal Democrat."
Support from Joe Rogan is much easier to fathom, in my estimation.
