"Follow the Rules" is code for:

We suspect that Bernie will have a plurality (but not a majority) of delegates going into the convention. If that's the case, we reserve the right to pool our delegates together to insure that Bernie is NOT the party's nominee. We reserve the right to band together to nominate someone else.

I am pretty sure that's what I heard (even if nobody actually said it).

The fact is we can't have a nominee with only 30% of the vote...so on the second ballot there will likely be a bloodfest. I hope we have some who drop out and prevent this...but consider...50% of Sanders voters won't vote for anyone but him and he isn't bringing in enough new voters to make up for those he will lose...so what choice do we have? Hopefully we can appeal to more moderate voters and forge a new coalition (50 state strategy) where we don't have the left/greens wrecking our elections as in the 70's, the 80's, 2000,2004,2010,2014 and of course 2016 where they helped elect Trump by voting for Stein...some of this sort now work for Sanders...Stein voter. Thu Feb 20, 2020, 03:28 PM
Feb 2020

Sanders' reforms of the nominating process restored the superdelegates to their rightful role. They originally were created as tie breakers but the DNC had deviated from that tradition in recent decades. That's why they were contentious in 2016. Many of them had been locked down months before a single state has voted in a caucus or primary. Not so this cycle!

Now, they are back they way they are supposed to be, as Sanders requested.

a candidate having a majority before getting the nomination. The number of delegates at the start of the convention is irrelevant, unless one candidate has a majority of them. There is a sequence of ballots that gets followed. In it, nonviable candidates (less than 15%) get dropped from the next ballot. Their delegates are then free to vote for someone else. I can conceive of this convention going as far as three ballots before there is a majority candidate.

That is not a "brokered" convention, or even a "contested" convention. That is a Democratic nominating convention, with rules that will be followed which eliminate nonviable candidate after each ballot. Before long, someone has a majority, and it might well not be the one who came in with the most delegates at the beginning.

Sorry, Bernie! That's how it works. If you were a Democrat all the time, you'd understand the system. it's used all the way down to the precinct level in the party.
