Democratic Primaries
Related: About this forumWarren or Sanders?
I like the gutsy, sassy, classy woman. She persists.
She nailed it last night and stood all 5'8 of her, taller than the men. She stood for women when she nailed Bloomberg.
Brilliant woman that has accomplished more than anyone on that stage and that was long before she became The Senior Senator of MA. She grabbed that seat back from Scottie Brown, former Cosmopolitan centerfold, eeeew.
Fact. The Consumer Financial Protection Agency was all hers. She did it before she was a SENATOR! ACCOMPLISHMENT EXTRAORDINAIRE!
Fact. One issue I disagreed with her on was M4A. She came up honestly with a plan to make it happen, Sanders refused. She has since backed off on her strong stance that it is the only way forward. She is for incremental steps and I believe she will be expanding on ACA first. The rest can happen over time.
Super Tuesday I will be voting for her. I was at the Town Hall today to request a ballot for my soon to be 94 year old mom. My family votes Democratic.

We need the wisdom of the American people, here. There is such a wisdom. It is wide and it is deep. It is found inside each of us and all of us thrown together.
I cannot claim to have a handle on that.
Nonetheless, I can assure you from the bottom of my heart that wisdom comes not from polls. Wisdom comes from inside yourself.
Please utilize your own wisdom to decide which candidate is the right one for this moment.
If you still choose Bernie, your choice will mean more to you imho.
You will be exercising your right to self government.

Only a fraction of the proposed bills sponsored by Senators Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Bernie Sanders ( D-VT) have been passed by Congress.

This phenomenon is not unique to these four senators (as only a very small fraction of all proposed legislation ends up being passed), and the statistics included in the meme are outdated

(53,061 posts)Sanders is disliked by his colleagues. When he ran 4 years ago he got one pity endorsement from one Democratic Senator and was not endorsed by a large number of Vermont politicians.
He was successful in helping the NRA pass the bill giving gun manufacturers immunity from Civil law suits but that's about it.
In 2012 he proudly stated that he wasn't a Democrat but if the Democrats had any sense they should primary President Obama.
Warren can unite the party. Sanders, the interloper, will fracture the party. In the end Sanders won't get it but Sanders will be the embittered loser and help Trump get re elected.

(628 posts)On what subject did Senator Sanders seriously try to legislate?
Where is Bernie's campaign finance reform bill?
Election security bill?
Have been watching Congress fretfully for years (since before the fall of Glass-Steagall). I even read the senate record 🤓.
Yet, somehow, some way, Bernie's heroic proposed legislation escaped me. What was it? More than one?
His M4A looks like a messaging bill right now, which could be intentional. It is dispiriting.
Amy Klobuchar has what, 4-5? How many does Bernie Sanders have waiting out there? Do tell. Anxiously awaiting.
Curious how I fell for a meme, friend.
Not a fan of twitter, Facebook or cable news. There are no teenagers in my house.
Alas, I no longer get congressional quarterly.
If Bernie Sanders made some big legislative push that I missed do tell. I highly doubt I did. I am aware he proposes a lot of amendments-- hardly Russ Feingold, but better than nothing.
You do know Bernie has been an "establishment" politician (in that he is, & has been, undeniably, a member of the political establishment) for a long time?
You also know Senators Harris, Booker and Warren have been part of the "Washington establishment" (hello 1960!) for a shorter time period than Senator Sanders?

Look at his record
Senator Sanders has a habit of making the perfect the enemy of the ever so much better.
See his desire to primary president Obama.
I have been listening to Bernie for years. His list of problems is long & fairly prescient. His list of solutions is thin, vague and full of catchphrases from the 1960's ("establishment," how heavy man).
He is adorable, stubborn and inclined to believe those who disagree with him are "establishment" by definition.

(10,303 posts)Bernie has great ideas. Elizabeth has great plans. Liz has also all the right progressive policies without the "Democratic Socialist" baggage that Bernie has. If he branded himself as a social Democrat that he really is then that's different... but nope he still sticks to that label. And IMO that will turn the older population off... those who have succumbed to the Trump GOP brainwashing and those who grew up in the Cold War era having had it summed into them that communism is bad and socialism is the same thing as communism.
Elizabeth Warren is IMO a Social Democrat who practices Social Democracy. The Consumer Financial Protection Agency is a small example of what Social Democracy is all about, and it's her "baby". Shame about the abusive stepfather in charge right now mind...
In the end America needs a universal, single payer, government organized health care system because the private sector has shown it's incapable of doing the job and many other countries around the world have come to the same conclusion - some earlier than others of course.

(351 posts)Warren and Sanders have very similar ideas, but Warren has not declared herself a Socialist (gasp). In fact, she has always called herself a Capitalist, and she is, but of the kind of Capitalism that is well regulated and that widely benefits all economic classes.
I think the Repubs will beat us by hammering Bernie with the "Socialist" label if he's our pick, although I don't think it will have much to do with voter age. There are lots of us old hippies still around; many of whom lived in communes, and loved the social programs of the 40's, 50's, and 60's. Unfortunately, I know of a bunch of 40-50's people who are totally freaked out about Socialism.

(6,278 posts)Sending it in tomorrow for Warren.
My wife had an interesting observation, which was that Warren supporters as a group love their candidate but have little inclination toward "Liz or Bust!" attitudes. So if there is a brokered convention, she would like to see Warren delegates as a major force because they're likely to be the sort who will come up with solutions that put us in a good position for November, and not the kind who would create unity problems coming out of the convention because their favored candidate didn't get the nod.
We certainly see that a lot here - Warren supporters saying they also like Bernie or Amy. I definitely have a pecking order among my second choices, but know whatever the outcome for the primaries I'm all in for the Democratic candidate. At the same time, Warren is my dream candidate. I wished she'd run in 2016. She's done and said a few things I wish she hadn't, but nobody's perfect. Warren does her homework, is brilliant, energetic, passionate, has the right values, doesn't back down from a fight... and also knows how to get things done, and scares and angers all the right people.

(22,913 posts)This presidential cycle, more than any other that I've participated in, I am choosing to let general public voter preferences strongly influence my choice. Not exclusively literal poll numbers, but also the degree of enthusiasm each candidate is capable of producing and the demographics of where they tend to draw support. Warren and Sanders have differing strengths and weaknesses even if their policies, though not identical, are similar.
Last March I wrote this in an OP here:
"We don't know if 2020 voters will want a moderate consensus building candidate or a system changer
THAT is one of the main reasons why I am not firmly in any candidate's camp yet. Sure I know we have to win, that beating Trump is virtually everything. THAT is one of the main reasons why I am not firmly in any candidate's camp yet.
It is old accepted political wisdom that the path to the Presidency runs through the center in the General Election by attempting to win over the small sliver of genuinely undecided swing voters in the middle of the ideological spectrum. That accepted wisdom was definitely cracked if not shattered in 2016. What we went through in 2016 may cause the center to reassert itself as a counter reaction for 2020, or it may have been an indicator that we are seeing increasing turbulence in the electorate that has not yet seen its peak. Tried and true was not the winning formula in 2016. It is far to early to be seen what will be in 2020."
During the months that Warren was my preference here I also defended Sanders from those were were temp[ted to dismiss him as an also ran left behind in the dust bin of history. I knew that he was being seriously underestimated, and I was correct. I also recognized the strong case that could be made for Vice President Biden, if his campaign showed an ability to consistently elicit enough voter enthusiasm.
A lot is on the line for Warren now. No matter how fine a President she would make, or how powerful a campaigner she can be, the latter has to be reflected in a strong rise in her finish in soon to be contested races. She needs to ride a real sense of surge into Super Tuesday to remain competitive. If she does, based on that type of evidence, I would reconsider my candidate preference here. At this fixed moment in time, my reasons for shifting to Sanders in early January have been validated by the dynamics of the race up until this point. But there is still (a little) time for that to change again.

(628 posts)She will accomplish everything she can every step of the way.
Senator Warren has already shown what she can do to a self-made billionaire.
Imagine how the unindicted co-conspirator, serial bankrupt will wither before her.
Maybe this president will resign rather than face her? A person can hope. Sarah Palin quit. It isn't without precedent for GOP folks in way over their heads (& this president is clearly drowning).
Elizabeth Warren is the right candidate for this moment. She has spent her life in training for right now.
No-one else comes close, even though they all deserve respect ✊, even Bloomberg.
The former mayor's subscription may help rig the system against the rest of us; yet, it is sadly legal to do so. He did see the loophole & exploit it, which shows skill, & insight.

(65,175 posts)Warren just may be the most intelligent of our candidates. She is strong and has great chance against Trump IMO. Her proposal to get to Medicare For All might work. And it would be nice to have a woman President.
But I decided not to abandon Sanders. His beliefs are still most similar to mine and I feel his passion. I feel he can beat Trump by turning his working class lies around on him. I wouldnt be for him if I did not feel he could win.
Liking both is fine!
