If they were just at a given market price without other conditions/exclusions, then sure. The thing is that even if that were the case, there might still be a critique on that. The debates are somehow considered different from a candidate's fundraiser where entry might be limited to those with ability/willingness to pay. The debates are "open" to the public in that they are televised.

Now, I'd hope that as the Democratic Party considers thing next time about the primary process, in addition to considering things like primaries vs. caucuses, it would also consider reform to the debate structure, including a system for ensuring that the audience participation is representative of the party in terms of gender, race, economic group (farmers, small business people, office workers, etc., etc.), and sexual orientation.

There is no reason why after candidates have been given their free passes for family, staff, friends etc. that the DNC cannot sell the tickets for whatever they wish to set the price for fundraising purposes. There are also the costs of the venue and the production broadcasting costs, which presumably are covered by the advertising the network sells. But the DNC should absolutely be able to make it a fundraiser for itself to cover costs it has to continue to promote and run the DNC and support its presidential candidate.

If I were to vote in a presidential

Joe Biden

The only one fueling the "establishment is against Bernie" trope is Bernie are his Bernie bros and bots who push that theory.

My point is that its ridiculous and is a straw man argument and "Oh, whoa is me....the whole system is corrupt" meme he loves to throw at the DNC, the Democrats and basically anyone who isn't impressed with him.

of how tickets were distributed. I realize that all of the campaigns got equal numbers, but it is not clear if others were sold, or if not, how decisions were made as to who would get all of those other tickets. There may or may not be a problem. I am withholding comment for now.

None of the tickets have a face value. They are allocated in different quantities to:

The DNC
The State Party
The candidates
The Media sponsor (in this case CBS)
The site host (in this case the non-profit Gaillard Center)

The DNC makes its allotment of ticket available to:
DNC leadership
Special Guests (example: Al Sharpton)
Financial Supporters (the "National Finance Committee&quot , either for a single event (Detroit was $5,000) or to people who make significant contributions for the election cycle (in my case, $50,000).

The State Party generally makes its tickets available to:
State Party leadership
State and Local Elected Officials
Local residents (usually by lottery)

The candidates make their tickets available to:
Campaign staff
Family members and Guests
Campaign supporters (usually through a "make a contribution and be entered in a contest to win tickets" deal)

The media sponsor makes their tickets available to:
Network executives
Major advertisers
Special Guests

The site host makes tickets available to:
Site management
Affiliated members (in the case of an educational institution, faculty and students)
Special Guests
