Sanders: "Stay away from me"

Annie Grayer

@AnnieGrayerCNN

Via @tedbarrettcnn on the Hill w/ @BernieSanders: when asked to explain how his absence from the Senate was consistent w/ his efforts to address the crisis, Sanders accused a reporter of standing too close to him:

"Stay away from me. There's CDC requirement. Please follow it.”
If I were to vote in a presidential

"Stay away from us and we'll stay away from you!"

I don't blame Bernie for wanting to follow CDC recommendations (not "requirements" as he said)...it's the wise thing to do. But he coulda been a little more polite or diplomatic about it. Shades of what it woulda been like with him in the White House making enemies left and right...literally and politically.

Maybe reality is starting to set in a little and he's getting a bit testy.

7. I keep wondering whether he's got symptoms or a positive test.

Why else would he be staying away from the Senate when they're working on major relief legislation? If he does, he really ought to be honest about it instead of just holing up in Vermont and telling people to stay away from him. Or maybe he's afraid of getting it because of his age and heart condition. If that's the case he shouldn't be running for president - his health is too fragile.

27. on senator.gov you can be updated about work on the pending bill package.heres 3/20,2020

https://www.sanders.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/sanders-pressley-warren-davis-lead-165-members-of-congress-in-calling-for-billions-in-community-health-center-funding-to-tackle-coronavirus-pandemic

WASHINGTON, March 20 — Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.), Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-Ill.) led 165 lawmakers in calling on House and Senate leadership to dramatically increase long-term funding for community health centers (CHCs) in the third coronavirus legislative package being drafted by Congress to address the immediate economic and public-health emergency needs caused by the pandemic.

“Given the severity of the COVID-19 outbreak,” the members of Congress write, CHCs should receive “the highest levels of funding, consistent with or surpassing those outlined in the Community Health Center and Primary Care Workforce Expansion Act.” That legislation, sponsored by Sanders and Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), provides CHCs with 10 percent annual funding increases over five years—nearly $7 billion more than flat-funding proposals being considered—thereby expanding care to 10 million more Americans by comparison.

“Community Health Centers are at the frontlines of this crisis,” the members of Congress note, “providing medical care and testing for over 29 million low-income people. It is of utmost importance that CHCs receive the long-term and robust resources necessary to meet the needs of our nation’s most vulnerable communities, especially as they work to test and care for patients during this unprecedented public health crisis.”

CHCs—a network of 1,400 facilities in all 50 states and U.S. territories—provide medical, dental, and mental health care, substance-abuse treatment, and low-cost prescription drugs for 29 million people. Their patients disproportionately include “communities of color, with African Americans making up more than one in five CHC patients,” the members of Congress added.

In addition to calling for 10-percent annual increases to community health centers in the third COVID-19 response package, the lawmakers stressed the need to assist medical professionals to tackle the pandemic, calling for increased funding for the National Health Service Corps and the Teaching Health Center Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) Program, which provide scholarships and loan repayment to 10,000 clinicians and trains residents in community-based ambulatory patient care centers""""

49. Because of corona virus some things will change. Hopefully not for too long.

Here's Sanders contact information just in case you need to yell at him to get his ass in the chair.

First and foremost, as we face a national emergency, I want all Vermonters to know that my office is here to help. Please do not hesitate to be in touch if we can be of assistance on our website or by phone: 1-802-862-0697. Please know that our call volume may be higher than normal and you may have to leave a message during business hours. My staff will be checking messages regularly and will call you back as soon as possible.

Right now, be assured that I am doing everything in my power in the U.S. Senate to correct the completely unacceptable federal response to this crisis. We must mobilize every tool and resource available to our government in order to tackle this unprecedented health-related and economic challenge. My offices continue to be in communication with Vermont’s state, local and health authorities on specific issues impacting Vermonters.

In my view, we must prioritize the health and economic wellbeing of Vermont’s working families—particularly our most vulnerable community members—instead of handing over another welfare check or no-strings-attached bailout to corporate CEOs and bankers on Wall Street.

Working people must have the income, healthy food, safe shelter and child care, workplace leave, and cost-free medical testing and treatment that they need right now. This means focusing on the needs of Vermont’s seniors, children, community members with compromised immune systems and chronic illness, those experiencing or at risk of homelessness, as well as students, homeowners and renters, workers, and small-business owners.

At this crucial moment for public health, I also urge Vermonters to practice commonsense safety precautions to curb the spread of the coronavirus, prevent unnecessary sickness and death, and stop our health care system from being overwhelmed. That includes good hand washing, maintaining safe distance from others, avoiding large crowds, and staying at home as much as possible.

Below is information regarding coronavirus, state and local updates, and travel advisories:

•General Information - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
•Status in Vermont - Vermont Department of Health
•Travel Information - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
•Travel Information (2) - U.S. Department of State - Bureau of Consular Affairs
•UVMHN - University of Vermont Health Network
•Coronavirus Scams - Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
•News and Updates - Department of Homeland Security (DHS)
•Country Specific Information - U.S. Department of State - Bureau of Consular Affairs
•Smart Traveller Enrollment Program - It is recommended that anyone abroad register their travel plans on this website so they will get specific notices while travelling (STEP)

BTW, you'll find this interesting:

Sen. Sanders has missed 61.6% of votes in the 116th Congress (2019-20). This makes him the 1st most absent member of the Senate.

https://projects.propublica.org/represent/members/S000033/votes-missed/116

Also, from June 28 through January 8 he missed 244 consecutive votes. That's 6-1/2 MONTHS during which he didn't cast a single vote in the Senate, didn't even step foot in the Senate chamber. That spanned $92,807 worth of salary that he collected for not showing up a single day.

If any of us tried that we'd get fired within a week or two.

There was no risk of contact with COVID-19 during that time.

check the voting history of ALL of our elected and here check the records of all republicans as well and you can even go back in time and see how Biden voted.

Both Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders are ON OUR SIDE, please quit the circular firing squad, it's very divisive to the D party voters.

BYW, love Cory Booker, he hasn't been there very long but he sure would make an excellent VP or future president. Personally I think it was a mistake for Joe Biden to exclude half the choices for VP so early in the primary.

Bernard Sanders and Cory Booker are from the same party and agreed on 91 percent of votes in the 115th Congress

100. "Our party works closely withh the d party leader.."

What or who exactly is "our party?" Is "our party" different from the Democratic Party"? If Bernie is a leader of some party other than the Democratic Party, why the Hell is he running to be the Democratic candidate for president?

So Bernie votes with us the majority of the times he votes. But he very often doesn't vote at all, which is a dereliction of his duty as a senator.

I voted for and supported Bernie in the 2016 primary, but now I view that as a mistake. This latest bullshit--sending his surrogates out to accuse Vice President Biden of being a pedophile, for Christ's sake!--is beyond the last straw.

Either Bernie is a stealth Socialist Workers Party stooge (he was an elector for them in the '70s) or he's a Russian troll, or he's a deluded narcissist who sees himself as the end all be all of American politics. Whatever the case, he is now doing way more harm than good--and I wonder now, given his (lack of a) record as a legislator, if he's ever done much good at all.

This is serious shit, all our elected and presidential candidates need to limit exposure.

There's a very high chance many of the people who hang around the white house like reporters are infected or their gear is contaminated. The white house should really close to people and start to do all interviews online.

He went to group lunches, used the gyms and just spread corona around for the past week or so. In the white house! Now its going to be a wait a couple weeks to see who will become sick.

Senator Amys husband is on oxygen, he's very sick.

46. yes, 2 weeks apart so hope she's safe & he gets well. Amys 3/23 statement about her husband

I have news that many Americans are facing right now: my husband John has the coronavirus. We just got the test results at 7 a.m. this morning. While I cannot see him and he is of course cut off from all visitors, our daughter Abigail and I are constantly calling and texting and emailing. We love him very much and pray for his recovery. He is exhausted and sick but a very strong and resilient person.

John started to feel sick when I was in Minnesota and he was in Washington D.C. and like so many others who have had the disease, he thought it was just a cold. Yet he immediately quarantined himself just in case and stopped going to his job teaching in Baltimore. He kept having a temperature and a bad, bad cough and when he started coughing up blood he got a test and a chest X-ray and they checked him into a hospital in Virginia because of a variety of things including very low oxygen levels which haven’t really improved. He now has pneumonia and is on oxygen but not a ventilator.

47. Trump's popularity # rising...

Bernie is almost 90 years old with heart problem, that puts him right on the top danger zone for COVID-19.

He might be kind of edgy about now being out in public.

Going all Andrew Dice Clay on Bernie right not might not help party unity. We need Bernie's voters to put a Dem in the White House, we need Bernie's voters to capture the senate away from Mitch, we likely need Bernie's voters to retain the House.

Trump is a conman who knows how to manipulate and massage public sentiment especially his voter base. His e re-election team are slime ball con men extraordinaire.

Do not alienate Bernie's voters for the naked excitement or thrills derived for having done so, because the ultimate final result is a second four year term for Trump in the White House. Will the entertainment be worth it as we witness our Democracy fade and final crumble as Trump style Fascism steps to the forefront and gains solid footing ?

Please don't allow that or do that to each other. The giggles, the thrills, and cheap shots against Bernie could prove very costly and detrimental to our political party. We must focus upon mending the chasms, unifying the party, and creating a force so strong and overwhelming Team Trump is ground to dust.

Back off on the Andrew Dice Clay routine - there is important work to be done - in house fighting gets us nowhere except way behind the opposition.

The more we tear down Bernie the more we alienate his voters/supporters. If we injure them relentlessly they will write in another or just sit this election out. Let's not needlessly piss them off.

Without these voters (Bernie's) firmly in the Demo Party camp the percentages vastly favor Trump winning the 2020 election and sailing into his second term.

That is frightening.

82. Wow, let's not get too paranoid here, okay?

It was in no way a "threat"...just that I can defend myself if and when necessary. I may still be relatively new to this forum but I am a seasoned veteran of others and have the scars to prove it.

If we can get serious for a minute, I want as many of Bernie's people on board...up to a point. But you must realize that there is a certain fraction of them who will NEVER be placated no matter how hard Joe or we try...

Sanders Supporters Have No Plans to Relent on Biden as Nominee

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-03-19/sanders-supporters-have-no-plans-to-relent-on-biden-as-nominee

Apparently these younger anarchist folks can't count and presume their political clout to be FAR greater than it really is. In reality, there are far greater numbers in the middle, from slightly right-of-center to slightly left. For every Sanders' supporter Joe wins over by conceding too much he'll lose 2 or 3 or more in that densely populated middle. That's a fool's errand. The last thing Biden needs to do is turn a winning message that appeals to a broad swath and majority of Americans and adopt a losing one that can't even win the Democratic nomination.

Besides, unless I got my history wrong it's the LOSER who is typically the one who is supposed to compromise more than the WINNER. Maybe Bernie Bros just haven't opened up the memo yet...probably because they're too busy sending out bullshit attack Tweets about Joe. The Democratic Party should not permit itself to be held hostage by a group that numbers perhaps 2 or 3% of the total electorate. If Joe stays the course or fairly close to it he won't need such small numbers when the mainstream kicks in come November.

84. And a couple other things to consider while I'm thinking about it

First, a lot of these younger folks making their bold demands didn't even bother to show up to vote for Bernie himself...what makes anybody seriously think they'll do so for Joe even if he stupidly gave them everything they asked for? He could read Sanders' speeches word for word and some would still reject him and turn up missing in November just like they did in February and March. Joe tacks too far left and all he'll do is earn a vote that never gets cast while losing many he coulda had for real.

Secondly, I figure progressives only number around 15-20% tops of the total electorate...with a much smaller fraction of that Sanders extremists who are causing most of the friction right now. The problem (besides that not being a very large percentage) is that they are not uniformly scattered throughout the nation. They're mostly heavily clustered on the East Coast in states like NY & MA and on the West Coast in CA & WA. Maybe a few central states like WI and perhaps IL. They don't matter a lick if they don't show up to vote for Joe because they're all pissed off about losing the primaries...so Joe carries those states with a lower winning percentage but still a solid victory...he still banks the electoral votes. But I got a newsflash for people...there just ain't than many progressives here in AZ or OH or NC or FL...states that Sanders woulda likely got trounced in that Joe has an excellent chance of winning if he just stays a little more moderate. He goes too far left and you can probably kiss all them crucial purple swing states goodbye.

If Biden wants this to be a closer election than it really needs to be, then he can kiss Bernie's ass and that oughta just about do it.

It left an indelible mark on my perception of him.
