Fun fact: there are more than 200 Dems who have filed for president 2020

There are 227 Democrats filed with the FEC for president 2020.

Hence, the need for the debates to draw a line somewhere, usually fundraising and/or poll approval.

Perhaps not on this kind of scale, but the number of entrants routinely numbers in the hundreds. We only hear about the "major" candidates, of course. Though, occasionally, one of the minor candidates tries to get on the debate stage, which is why they have qualifiers.
