O'Rourke Stays Away from TV

April 17, 2019 at 10:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
Politico: ORourkes cable absenteeism diverges with the omnipresence of other 2020 candidates, particularly South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, whose media saturation strategy corresponds with his recent rise in polls and surprise early fundraising successes.
Said ORourke: We have held more town halls in the month and four days that weve been doing this than I think any other candidate, because meeting you eyeball to eyeball, to me, is so much more satisfying than being on cable TV and in a soundbite.
He added: At some point, I may have to give in and be on your television set, but right now I want to be with you in person.

(2,113 posts)1. I bet this is why some of the media have been a bit snarky towards him
and try to falsely imply he is fizzling out. They are trying to manipulate O'Rourke into giving more TV interviews but he wants to meet the voters and work hard campaigning instead. He is playing it smart by avoiding peaking too soon.

The guy truly couldn't care less

(314 posts)2. He's playing the long game
I like his strategy; literally going door to door not only in Iowa and New Hampshire, but South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia. I'm sure he's making plans to go to other states as well.
Not to mention, there's the HBO documentary coming out next month.

(81,475 posts)3. There is another reason
He's often in the boonies, and he'd rather spend that spare time talking to his kids
He knows how the media can turn on him on a dime.
