In order to be duped they would first have had to care about truth vs falsity. They did/do not. The true-false axis is a skew line to whatever they are up to; doesn't intersect at all.

They didn't give a shit whether or not it was true, just that it was a useful political cudgel, so giving them the credit/charity of having been deceived is unwarranted. They didn't act based on a belief of truthfulness, truthfulness had nothing to do with the matter.
