I don't recall the names but they make similar promises in their oft-repeated TV ads. Beware.

7. My favorite auto-shop has a prominent sign to let customers know that they're responsible for filing their own claim *

* and/or getting their own reimbursement from Car Shield. --- When I asked what was going on, she explained that they were difficult to deal with. That phone calls took forever to get approved or declined when they called on behalf of the customer. And the customer was asking them (the shop) to be their advocate and challenge/appeal repairs that were denied.

Basically it was a big waste of their time, and it made customers unhappy with the auto-shop by proxy.

Their new policy is to provide the customer with a detailed estimate which they can use to get their own pre-approval, or a detailed invoice that they can use to try and get a reimbursement.

We have an extended warranty from CarMax ... so far, so good. I guess it all depends on the company.

8. I think most all of these warranties are essentially a scam

I will say I had one good experience along these lines but it was a home warranty. When we bought our house our agent recommended we have the seller pay for a one year warranty. We had some electrical issues a couple months later and I contacted the insurance and they sent an electrician out. He fixed things. Then shortly after the same thing again. If I remember right the electrician told us to call him if we had trouble. The insurance had him in an open ended contract. The work was minor but I was impressed with how well it worked.

10. Buying a service hundreds of miles away for a service that will be done locally

is crazy. It's done with lots of things. Extended warranties. Tire installs. You pay the company in California, and go to a local national chain shop, which has no room to schedule you. And it's awkward, you don't know if they're looking for a tip to squeeze you in.

Best idea: put your $100 a month in the bank earmarked for car repairs. Fiscal discipline.
