Students suspended for riding bycicles

More than 60 Kenowa Hills High School seniors have been suspended one day because they caused a two-mile traffic jam while participating in a bike ride to school, administrators said.

The ride was Tuesday morning and included an escort from the mayor of Walker and officers from the city police department.

The punishment includes the students being banned from participating in the annual senior walk through the school halls on their last day, which is Tuesday.

New Mayan calendar goes well past 2012

http://www.wzzm13.com/news/article/211975/14/New-Mayan-calendar-goes-way-past-2012

Newly discovered wall writings found in Guatemala show the famed Maya culture's obsession with cycles of time. But they also show calendars that go well beyond 2012, the year when the vanished civilization, according to popular culture, expected the end of the world.

"So much for the supposed end of the world," says archaeologist William Saturno of Boston University, lead author of a study in the journal Science, which reported the discovery on Thursday.

Discovered in the ruins of Xultun, the astronomical calendar was unearthed from a filled-in scribe's room. While about 7 million Maya people still live in Central America today, the "Classic" Maya civilization of pyramid temples had collapsed there by about 900 A.D., leaving only a few birch-bark books dating to perhaps the 14th century as records of their astronomy, until now.

So I guess we'll have to deal with Jersey Shore and the Kardashians for some time to come!

Man finds turtle with son's initials on it (carved 47 years ago)

A Pennsylvania man said he recently found a live turtle his son carved his initials into 47 years ago.

Holland Cokeley, 85, was walking in the woods behind his South Strabane home with his neighbor's dog when the dog found the turtle, KDKA-TV, Pittsburgh, reported Friday.

"I picked it up, and I thought, 'Oh geez, this is Jeff's turtle!'" said Cokeley. "It's been here for 47 years, and it still has the same markings on it!"

In 1965, Jeff Cokeley, then 13, carved "JC" and "1965" on the turtle's bottom shell and then released it back into the wild. He now lives in New York but laughed when his father sent him a picture of the turtle, Holland Cokeley said.

These kinds of turtles can live longer than most humans.
